Home Care in Petts Wood

Care at home for older and disabled people in Petts Wood, BR5: both sides of the station, the roads towards Crofton and Orpington, and the edge of the woods.

We can provide home care in Petts Wood, either as visits through the day or as a live-in carer. The 208 bus runs from Lewisham station, close to our office, to Queensway by Petts Wood station, and trains through Grove Park link the two as well, so visits are possible here when we have a carer available at the times you need. A free home assessment comes first, then a written care plan.

Getting to Petts Wood

Petts Wood station has Southeastern and Thameslink services. Bus routes 208, 273, R3 and R7 connect the area with Bromley, Catford, Chislehurst, Grove Park, Lewisham and Orpington. For someone who has stopped driving, those routes are worth knowing: a carer can go with them on the 208 to Orpington or Bromley town centre as easily as to the shops by the station.

The streets close to the station are in a controlled parking zone. Bromley Council does not offer carers' permits, so a visiting carer parking in a permit bay during restricted hours needs one of your visitor vouchers on the dashboard.

Living in a protected garden suburb

Most of Petts Wood was built in the late 1920s by the developer Basil Scruby, with a road layout designed by the architect Leonard Culliford on garden suburb lines. Scruby even paid the Southern Railway to build the station.

Parts of the estate are conservation areas, and Bromley Council applies extra planning controls to the look of the garden suburb from the street.

That matters more for care than people expect. Inside the house, rails, a stairlift or a level-access shower rarely raise planning questions. Widening a front gate for a wheelchair, removing a low wall, or building a ramp up to the front door is different, and in parts of Petts Wood it may need permission. Check with the council's planning team before booking a builder, and talk to us about how carers can manage access in the meantime.

The woods are on your doorstep. The National Trust looks after Petts Wood and Hawkwood, where a memorial sundial commemorates William Willett, the builder who campaigned for daylight saving time and is thought to have had the idea while riding here. A short walk to the edge of the wood is a good outing for a companionship visit.

Two hospitals a short drive away

The Princess Royal University Hospital at Farnborough Common is the main A&E for Petts Wood, and Orpington Hospital on Sevenoaks Road provides rehabilitation and a frailty unit. King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs both. People living alone have been supported home from either site by Bromley Well's Take Home and Settle service, delivered by Age UK Bromley & Greenwich. If ongoing care will be needed, contact us while the ward is still planning the discharge.

Will Bromley Council pay for home care in Petts Wood?

It might pay part or all of it. Bromley's Adult Social Care team carries out the needs assessment. Request it by phone on 020 8461 7777 or start through the council's care assessment page. If the person's needs are eligible, a financial assessment works out what they pay. People with substantial health needs can be assessed for NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our own fees are quoted in writing after we have met you. For the wider borough picture, see our Bromley home care page.

What we can do in Petts Wood

Live-in care and respite

Petts Wood houses were built for families, and most still have a spare bedroom, which is what a live-in carer needs. Live-in care suits couples who want to stay together in the house they have had for decades. For a family carer who needs a break, we can cover a holiday with a live-in carer or add regular visits. In Orpington, the Saxon Day Centre on Lych Gate Road (Age Concern Orpington & District) offers day care for older people, including people with dementia. Bromley Well supports carers with advice and groups.

Petts Wood FAQs

Questions families ask us about Petts Wood. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's house is in a conservation area. Can we still put in a ramp?

Possibly, but check with Bromley's planning team first, because external changes at the front of the house can need permission in parts of Petts Wood. We can plan visits around the current access meanwhile.

Do you cover the Crofton and St Paul's Cray edges of Petts Wood?

Yes. We cover all of BR5 around Petts Wood, including the Crofton side towards Orpington and the Poverest and St Paul's Cray side. Live-in care is available throughout. Visits depend on carer availability, so ask.

Could a carer take Dad to the Saxon Day Centre in Orpington?

We can help him get ready on day-centre days and, where it is in the care plan, go with him. His place at the centre is arranged directly with Age Concern Orpington & District.

My father is in Orpington Hospital's frailty unit. When should I call you?

Now, while the discharge is still being planned. That gives us time to assess, agree a plan with you and the ward, and check we have a carer for the times he needs.
