Home Care in Anerley
Visits and live-in care in Anerley, SE20: Anerley Road, the streets climbing towards Crystal Palace, and the estates between Penge and South Norwood.
We provide home care in Anerley, from short visits for washing, dressing and medicines to live-in care. Anerley is one of the easiest parts of Bromley to reach from our Lewisham office, so visiting care is a realistic option here whenever we have a carer free at the times you need. We start with a free assessment in the home and a written care plan.
Getting here from Lewisham
The 75 bus runs from Lewisham station, a short walk from our office, through Catford, Sydenham and Penge to Anerley Road, and on to South Norwood and Croydon. Anerley station is on the London Overground Windrush line, between Penge West and Norwood Junction. Southern's off-peak trains to London Bridge were withdrawn in 2022, leaving only a few peak-hour Southern services, so check older journey plans. Other buses include the 157, 197, 249, 354, 356, 358 and 432, and the 249 and 432 start and finish at the bus stand behind the station.
Bromley Council does not offer carers' parking permits. If a carer drives and your street has permit bays, they will need one of your visitor vouchers during restricted hours.
Converted villas, upper floors and small rooms
Anerley grew up around a station that opened in 1839, and its streets were lined with large Victorian houses. By the early twentieth century many of those had been divided into flats, and in the 1960s and 1970s housing estates went up on bomb sites and cleared land. Much of the former council housing in Bromley is now owned by Clarion Housing Group.
For care, the result is a lot of small spaces. A first- or second-floor conversion flat with no lift makes getting someone in and out of the building difficult. A narrow bathroom may not take a hoist or a shower chair without changes. We look at every room at the assessment and tell you plainly what is safe, and what an occupational therapist assessment through the council might change.
What a visit in Anerley can cover
- Mornings and evenings: personal care to get up, wash, dress and get ready for bed, with medication support recorded at each visit.
- Around the home: home help with meals, laundry and shopping on Anerley Road or in Penge.
- Company: companionship, or a sit-in service while the family is out.
- Memory problems: dementia care with consistent routines.
- Higher needs: support after a hospital stay, complex care and palliative care.
- Feet: nail care at home.
Is Anerley in Bromley or Croydon?
Most of Anerley is in the London Borough of Bromley, but it sits right on the boundary. South Norwood, to the west, is in Croydon, and the roads up Anerley Hill run into Crystal Palace, where several boroughs meet. The council that assesses and funds care is the one where the person lives, so check the council tax bill. For Bromley residents, the route is Bromley's Adult Social Care team on 020 8461 7777 or the council's care assessment page. Our Bromley home care page sets out the borough-wide picture.
Can I get help paying for home care in Anerley?
Possibly. If Bromley Council's needs assessment finds eligible needs, a financial assessment decides how much the person contributes, and the council can pay the rest directly or as a direct payment. People with mainly health needs can be assessed for NHS Continuing Healthcare. We quote in writing after our own assessment, never as a figure over the phone.
A community building with a long history. Anerley Town Hall on Anerley Road was built in 1878 as the vestry hall for the old Hamlet of Penge. Today the Crystal Palace Community Trust, a local charity, runs it as a community centre. A companionship visit can include getting to events there.
Live-in care and breaks for carers
A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, which a one-bedroom flat cannot provide. In Anerley's larger houses, and in two-bedroom flats, live-in care is often a good option. Where there is no spare room, a pattern of visits is the practical answer. If you are looking after someone, ask Bromley Council for a carer's assessment and contact Bromley Well. Age UK Bromley & Greenwich runs Memory Lane Cafe sessions for people living with dementia and their carers. We can provide respite care as regular visits or a short live-in stay.

Anerley FAQs
Questions families ask us about Anerley. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy mother lives on the second floor with no lift. Can you still care for her?
Yes, inside the flat. The stairs are the harder part: getting her out to appointments may need two people or specialist equipment. We will assess that honestly and suggest asking the council about rehousing or adaptations if the stairs become unsafe.
Do you cover the Anerley Hill and Crystal Palace end?
Yes. We cover SE20 and the SE19 streets around Anerley Hill. If the address falls in Croydon or another borough, we can still provide care, but the council route will be different.
Can a carer take Dad for a walk in Crystal Palace Park?
Yes, if it is safe for him and agreed in the care plan. Anerley Hill is steep, so we will plan a route that suits his walking or his wheelchair.
Dad's flat only has one bedroom. Is live-in care possible?
Not in a one-bedroom flat, because the carer needs their own room. Visits through the day, possibly with a sit-in service at times, are the better route there.
