Live-in Care in Peckham

A carer who moves into your relative's SE15 home, shops on Rye Lane for the food they actually eat, and is there through the night, in an estate maisonette north of the high street or a terrace off Bellenden Road.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Peckham. One of our carers moves in, has a bedroom of their own, and helps one person or a couple with washing and dressing, medication, meals, the house and getting out, with a replacement carer covering their time off. Jackie, our registered manager, starts with a free assessment at home, and the written care plan is agreed before anyone moves in.

Is there a spare room for a carer in a Peckham home?

The carer needs a bedroom with a door that closes, and in Peckham the answer often depends on which side of Rye Lane the home is on.

  • The rebuilt estates north of Peckham High Street. Many of the low-rise blocks and newer social homes have two bedrooms, and front doors at ground level or a short climb, which makes a live-in arrangement and a wheelchair both workable.
  • Upper flats in the Victorian streets. Around Bellenden Road and towards the Rye, a second bedroom may be a box room at the top of a steep flight. A carer can sleep there; the harder question is whether the person can still get up and down, and whether the bed or a commode should move to the same floor as the bathroom.
  • Flats above shops on Rye Lane and the high street. These are often reached by a side door and a narrow staircase. We look at how a carer would help someone out in a fire or a fall before we agree to it.

If the only bedroom is the person's own, live-in care is not the right fit. Our visiting home care in Peckham is the alternative, and Peckham is near enough to our Lewisham office for that to be realistic, subject to carers being free at your times.

Peckham Rye station on changeover day

A live-in carer works a set placement, then hands over to the next carer, who arrives with a suitcase. Peckham Rye station suits that well. It has London Overground Windrush line trains towards Clapham Junction and Dalston Junction, Southern to London Bridge, Southeastern to Victoria and Thameslink to Blackfriars, and Queens Road Peckham is a second option to the east.

If a carer drives, check whether the street is in a controlled parking zone. Residents of a Southwark CPZ can buy virtual visitor's permits, including all-day permits, pre-booked against the car's registration, and Blue Badge holders can ask for a 50% discount. On a council estate, those permits do not apply; estate residents buy estate visitor vouchers instead.

An hour off between Rye Lane and the Rye

The carer's daily break is protected, and from most SE15 streets two quiet places are a short walk away:

  • Peckham Library on Peckham Hill Street, the Stirling Prize-winning building by the square, is open seven days a week, with lifts to every floor.
  • Peckham Rye Park at the southern end of Rye Lane, with the Sexby Garden and a Japanese garden for a quiet walk.

The same places work for the person too. A slow walk to the Rye, or an afternoon in the library, can be part of the day with the carer beside them.

Food from home. Rye Lane's African and Caribbean grocers stock what many older Peckham residents have cooked all their lives. Tell us at the assessment exactly what your relative eats and how it is made, and the carer can buy and cook it, or help in the kitchen if they still like to do it themselves.

When King's sends someone home to SE15

Most of Peckham is served by King's College Hospital on Denmark Hill, one stop from Peckham Rye by Overground or Southeastern. The first nights after a fall, a stroke or an operation are when someone is most likely to need help to the toilet at 3am, and in an upper flat with steep stairs that is exactly when a carer sleeping in the next room matters. If you are considering live-in care, tell the ward as soon as discharge is mentioned and give us the likely date, and we will be straight with you about whether a carer can be in place for it. Our page on hospital discharge support explains the steps.

Paying for live-in care in Peckham

We give a written quote after the free assessment, for one person or the two of you. Peckham is in Southwark, so any council funding comes through Southwark Adult Social Care after a needs assessment and a means test, and can be paid as a direct payment you spend with us. If the needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay the whole cost. Our Southwark live-in care page sets out both routes, and live-in care across London explains how the arrangement works day to day.

Live-in care in Peckham: what families ask

Questions families ask us about Peckham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad lives above a shop on Rye Lane. Could a carer live there with him?

Possibly, if there is a second bedroom. At the assessment we look at the side entrance and the stairs as well as the rooms, because a carer needs a safe way to get him out if he falls or there is an emergency. If the stairs are no longer safe for him, we will tell you, and you may want to raise a move or adaptations with his landlord.

Can the carer take Mum to her appointments at King's?

Yes. Denmark Hill is one stop from Peckham Rye, and the station is opposite the hospital. Going with her, listening to what the doctor says and picking up any new prescription are part of the job. Let us know about regular appointments so they go into the plan.

Mum spends most of Sunday at church. Does the carer have to go with her?

Only if she needs someone with her. If she does, the carer goes along and the time is planned so they still get their break that day. If friends from church look after her during the service, that time can sometimes be the carer's break instead.

Could we try a live-in carer for a couple of weeks before committing?

Yes. A short live-in stay is how many people use respite care in Southwark, for example while a family carer has a holiday. It is a fair way to find out whether having someone living in the flat suits your relative.
