Home Care and Live-in Care in Rush Green
Care at home in Rush Green, RM7, on the Dagenham Road side of the borough boundary, a short trip from Queen's Hospital.
Yes, we can arrange care in Rush Green, and here we usually recommend a live-in carer. Rush Green is the part of Barking and Dagenham furthest from our Lewisham office, so regular short visits are hard for us to staff reliably. A live-in carer travels once and then stays. Every arrangement begins with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Why we lead with live-in care here
From Lewisham High Street to Rush Green takes an hour or more by public transport, and by car it means the Blackwall Tunnel and the A13. A morning visit that depends on that journey is fragile. With a live-in carer, the journey happens at the start of a placement and not twice a day. One carer can support a couple. Visiting care is not ruled out, but we will be honest about which times we can cover.
Two councils share Rush Green
Rush Green straddles the boundary. Everything carries a Romford address and an RM7 postcode, but the northern part is in Havering, while the stretch south along Dagenham Road, in the Eastbrook and Rush Green ward, is in Barking and Dagenham. That matters, because the council that assesses and funds care depends on which side you live on.
- Barking and Dagenham side: Adult Intake Team, 020 8227 2915, or the online care needs assessment.
- Havering side: Havering Adult Social Care, 01708 432000.
If you are not sure which side you are on, your council tax bill will tell you.
Can I get help paying for live-in care in Rush Green?
Possibly. Either council will assess needs first and then means-test. Where it contributes, it can pay you a direct payment to buy care from the agency you choose; in Barking and Dagenham, Empower runs the support service that helps people manage direct payments. If the person's needs are mainly health needs, ask the hospital or GP about an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment, which can fund care in full. We do not publish prices; we quote in writing after assessing. The borough route is set out on our Barking and Dagenham page, and our paying for care guide covers the rest.
Queen's Hospital is close
Queen's Hospital on Rom Valley Way is the main A&E for Rush Green and is a short bus ride away (the 103 and 175 run from Rush Green Road and Dagenham Road to Rom Valley Way), which helps with outpatient appointments as well as emergencies. Rush Green once had a hospital of its own. Rush Green Hospital, on Dagenham Road, opened in 1901 as an isolation hospital and later housed the area's maternity unit; it closed in 1995 and the site is now housing and a medical centre.
When someone is ready to leave Queen's, discharge is planned with the ward and with the person's council. Call us as soon as a date is being discussed. Read more about our hospital discharge support.
GP surgeries on Dagenham Road
Eastbrook Surgery is at Rush Green Medical Centre, 261 Dagenham Road (RM7 0XR).
The houses and the streets
Rush Green is quieter and more suburban than the Becontree estate to the west: interwar and post-war terraces and semis on residential roads off Dagenham Road and Rush Green Road, plus the newer estate on the old hospital site. Barking and Dagenham College has a campus here, and West Ham United's training ground has been in Rush Green since 2015. For live-in care, many houses have the spare bedroom the carer needs. The usual difficulties are an upstairs-only bathroom and a steep staircase, which we work through with the family and, where needed, an occupational therapist.
Getting here: there is no station in Rush Green itself. The nearest are Romford (Elizabeth line, in Havering) and Dagenham East (District line). Tell us at the assessment whether your road has parking controls, so a carer arriving by car knows where to park.
Respite for the family carer
A spouse or son or daughter caring full-time needs breaks. Our respite care in Rush Green is mostly a live-in carer for a week or two while you go away or recover from your own illness. Ask your council for a carer's assessment too: in Barking and Dagenham, Carers of Barking and Dagenham on Heathway can also arrange one.

Rush Green FAQs
Questions families ask us about Rush Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionWe have a Romford address. Is that Havering or Barking and Dagenham?
It could be either. Rush Green is split between the two boroughs, so check your council tax bill. We cover both sides; only the council you deal with for assessments and funding changes.
Mum is being discharged from Queen's next week. Can a live-in carer be there when she gets home?
Call us now. We will assess her needs, ideally while she is still on the ward, and tell you plainly whether we can have a carer in place for the date the hospital gives you.
Can a live-in carer take Dad to his GP at Rush Green Medical Centre?
Yes. Accompanying him to appointments and picking up his prescriptions can all be part of the live-in arrangement.
Dad's in his own house but Mum, his main carer, needs surgery. What are the options?
Short-term live-in respite while she is in hospital and recovering is the usual answer. One carer can support them both once she is home.
