Home Care in Chadwell Heath, RM6
Care at home along the High Road and Whalebone Lane North, and in the streets around St Chad's Park, on the Barking and Dagenham side of Chadwell Heath.
Yes, we can arrange home care in Chadwell Heath. Live-in care is available at any home with a spare bedroom, and for full-time support it is the option we can promise most confidently this far from our Lewisham office. Visiting care depends on having a carer free at the times you need, so ask us. We start with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.
Barking and Dagenham or Redbridge? Check first
Chadwell Heath is split between two councils. Part of it, including the northern end of the Becontree estate and Whalebone Lane North, is in Barking and Dagenham. The rest, including Wangey Road and much of the area around the station, is in Redbridge. The RM6 postcode covers both. Look at the council tax bill: it tells you which council will assess your relative and help pay for care. This page describes the Barking and Dagenham route. We can still help if the address turns out to be in Redbridge, but the council contacts below will not apply.
The High Road and the streets behind it
The High Road (the A118) follows the old London to Colchester road, and Chadwell Heath grew up along it. Behind it the housing is mostly interwar terraces and semis, on roads such as Whalebone Lane North and the streets around St Chad's Park, with some low-rise flats near the shops. The semis often have a third bedroom, which suits live-in care. The terraces are tighter, with steep stairs and a single bathroom upstairs.
Elizabeth line, buses and the journey from Lewisham
Chadwell Heath station is on the Elizabeth line, with trains towards Romford and Shenfield and into Liverpool Street and central London. From our office, a carer would take the DLR to Canary Wharf, then the Elizabeth line, changing at Whitechapel for the Shenfield branch. That is around an hour or more each way, which is why visiting care here is limited by carer availability.
Locally, the 62 and 368 stop at the station. The 62 runs south through Becontree to Barking, and the 368 runs from Wangey Road to Barking. The 173 runs along the High Road to King George Hospital.
Hospitals and health centres nearby
King George Hospital on Barley Lane, Goodmayes, is the nearest A&E, a short bus ride along the High Road. Queen's Hospital in Romford is run by the same trust, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals. Patients are sometimes admitted there and discharged from there instead. NELFT runs Chadwell Heath Health Centre in Ashton Gardens (RM6 6RT) for community health services. When a discharge date is being set, tell the ward that home care is being arranged so the date fits around it. Our discharge support page explains what happens next.
Can I get respite care in Chadwell Heath?
Yes, in a few different ways. At home, we can provide a live-in carer for a week or two, or sit-in visits where we have availability, while the family carer takes a break. Barking and Dagenham Council also runs Kallar Lodge, its own dementia care home and respite centre, at 75 Gregory Road, RM6 5RU. It has 44 en-suite rooms. The council's short breaks page explains that most respite starts with a carer's assessment from the Adult Intake Team. The person being cared for usually needs their own needs assessment or review too.
Something to get out for. Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering runs activities for older people at St Chad's Church on Eric Road, including the Sunshine Community Cafe and the Mature Companions Club. A carer can come along as part of a companionship visit.
Arranging and paying for care through the council
For Barking and Dagenham addresses, call the Adult Intake Team on 020 8227 2915 or email intaketeam@lbbd.gov.uk to request a needs assessment. A financial assessment follows if your relative has eligible needs, and council funding can be paid as a direct payment. NHS Continuing Healthcare is assessed separately, for people whose needs are mainly health needs. We quote in writing after our assessment. Our Barking and Dagenham page has more about the borough.

Chadwell Heath questions
Questions families ask us about Chadwell Heath. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur address is RM6 but the council tax bill comes from Redbridge. Can you still help?
Yes. We provide care on both sides of the boundary. The difference is that Redbridge Council, not Barking and Dagenham, would carry out any needs assessment and decide on funding.
Is Kallar Lodge an alternative to home care for a short break?
It can be. It is the council's own dementia care home and respite centre on Gregory Road. Ask the home (020 8724 1863) or the Adult Intake Team about a stay. Some families prefer the person to stay at home, with a live-in carer covering the break. We can talk through both options at our assessment.
Can a carer travel with Mum to appointments at King George Hospital?
Yes, if it is in her care plan. The 173 runs along the High Road to the hospital, and a carer can go with her and wait.
Does the Elizabeth line mean you can do short daily visits here?
It makes the journey more reliable, but it is still around an hour from Lewisham. We can only agree to visits when we have a carer whose own journey makes them sustainable, so we check before we promise anything.
