Home Care in Hornchurch
From the High Street and Station Lane to Emerson Park and the streets running down to Hornchurch Country Park (RM11 and RM12): live-in care anywhere, respite at home, and visits where we have a carer who can reach you.
We can provide home care in Hornchurch. For full-time support we arrange live-in care, which works at any home with a spare bedroom. Visiting care is decided case by case, because Hornchurch is typically 65 to 90 minutes from our Lewisham office and we only agree to visits when a carer's journey can be sustained. Either way, we start with a free assessment in the home and a written care plan.
Semis, Emerson Park houses and flats near the High Street
Most of Hornchurch is interwar and post-war semis and terraces. They are good homes for live-in care, because a third bedroom is common. The usual problem is upstairs: one bathroom, a straight steep staircase and often a bath without a shower. A stairlift, a bath board or a downstairs bedroom often comes up at our assessment, along with what an occupational therapist could arrange.
North of the station towards Emerson Park, the houses are larger and often detached. The estate was laid out from 1895, and Emerson Park station opened in 1909 to serve it. These houses give a carer plenty of room, but there may be more stairs and longer distances inside the house. Around the High Street and North Street there are flats, some above shops, where step-free access is the question to ask.
Appointments at St George's, not just Queen's
Hornchurch now has its own NHS building. The St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub on Suttons Lane (RM12) opened to patients in November 2024 on the old St George's Hospital site. It has a GP practice, scans and blood tests, a frailty service, community services and Talking Therapies. It has no A&E. Emergencies and most hospital stays still go to Queen's Hospital in Romford, which the 193 bus serves direct from Hornchurch station and town centre. A carer can take your relative to appointments at either site if escorts are written into the care plan.
Who pays for home care in Hornchurch?
It depends on two separate tests. Havering Council first assesses needs. Call Adult Social Care on 01708 432000 or use its online enquiry route. If the needs are eligible, a financial assessment then works out what your relative pays, based on their income and savings. Council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used to pay us. If the needs are mainly health needs, ask the GP or ward about an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment. Self-funders pay the provider directly. We publish no price list, because the cost depends on the care plan, and we give a written quote after the assessment. Our paying for care page explains more.
Places worth going. Langtons Gardens, the Queen's Theatre and Fairkytes Arts Centre are all close to the High Street. Hornchurch Country Park, the old RAF Hornchurch airfield, is there for a longer walk. A matinee or a slow circuit of Langtons Gardens is exactly the sort of thing a companionship visit is for.
Getting to and around Hornchurch
The District line stops at Hornchurch and Upminster Bridge, and Emerson Park is on the Liberty line between Romford and Upminster. Buses including the 165, 193, 248, 252, 256, 370 and 372 stop in the town centre. Most residential roads have unrestricted parking, though there are restrictions near the stations.
Support for the family carer
If you are doing most of the caring, contact Havering's carers support service, run by Imago (0300 011 1965). It holds a weekly drop-in on Wednesday mornings at HOPWA House on Inskip Drive (RM11), and can arrange a carer's assessment. When you need a proper break, a live-in carer can cover a week or two at home as respite care. Healthwatch Havering is based at Harrow Lodge House on Hornchurch Road. It is the place to raise problems with local health and care services, including ours. For borough-wide contacts, see our Havering page.

What Hornchurch families ask us
Questions families ask us about Hornchurch. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad has a scan booked at St George's. Can a carer take him?
Yes, if we add appointment escorts to his care plan. The hub is on Suttons Lane in south Hornchurch. A carer can travel with him, stay during the appointment and bring him home.
We live in Emerson Park in a large detached house. Is live-in care easier there?
Usually, because there is space for the carer's own room. We still check the stairs, the bathroom layout and whether anything needs moving to the ground floor.
Is Hornchurch close enough for a morning and evening visit every day?
Sometimes, but we will not promise it until we have matched a carer whose journey works. Hornchurch is a long way from Lewisham, so we tell you plainly when live-in care is the more realistic option.
Where do I complain if a Hornchurch care service lets us down?
Go to the provider first. For us, that means Jackie, our registered manager. You can also contact Healthwatch Havering at Harrow Lodge House, and the council if it funds the care.
Does Mum's RM12 postcode mean Elm Park or Hornchurch?
RM12 covers south Hornchurch and Elm Park. It makes no difference to us, as we cover both. In either area, the council route is the same: Havering Adult Social Care.
