Home Care in Collier Row, Romford

Care at home across RM5, from the shops at Collier Row roundabout and Clockhouse Lane up to Havering Park and the edge of Bedfords Park, with live-in care the most dependable option this far from Lewisham.

Yes, we provide home care in Collier Row, and most of it is live-in care, where a carer moves into the spare bedroom and supports your relative through the day. Our office is in Lewisham, on the other side of London, so we can only offer visiting care in RM5 case by case, when we have a carer who can get there at the times you need. It starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

A 1930s estate around a crossroads

Collier Row takes its name from the charcoal burners who once worked here, but the district you see now is mostly a large housing estate built in the 1930s, with its shops gathered around the crossroads at Collier Row Road and the roundabout. Post-war semis and terraces fill in the gaps, along with some council flats. To the north the houses stop at Havering Park and the Green Belt, with Bedfords Park and Havering Country Park beyond. The A12 Eastern Avenue cuts across the southern end.

That housing matters for care. A typical Collier Row semi has three bedrooms, so there is usually a room for a live-in carer. It also has a straight, steep staircase and the only bathroom upstairs. At the assessment we look at whether a stairlift, a commode or moving a bed into the front room would make the days safer, and what the council's occupational therapist might provide.

No station, so it depends on the buses

Collier Row has no rail or Tube station. Romford station, with the Elizabeth line, is the link, and buses run from the roundabout into Romford town centre. The 175 and 365 also stop at Queen's Hospital, which helps on appointment days. The 247 runs west to Hainault station on the Central line, and the 375 runs north through Havering-atte-Bower. For a carer starting in south-east London, that means a train to Romford and then a bus, each way, which is why we are honest that visits here are hard to staff.

Parking is easier than in most of London. Most residential streets in Collier Row have no parking controls, so a carer who drives can usually park near the door. If your road is in one of Havering's controlled zones, the council issues a Health and Home Care permit for care workers from recognised organisations.

How much does home care cost in Collier Row?

We don't quote prices on the phone or on this page, because the cost depends on what care is needed. After the free assessment we give you a written quote. If Havering Council is going to help pay, the route is a Care Act needs assessment, followed by a financial assessment of income and savings. For care in your own home, the value of the house you live in is not counted. People with eligible needs can take the council's contribution as a direct payment and use it to arrange care themselves. If the main need is health-related, ask the GP or hospital team about an NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment.

You or a relative can ask for an assessment through Havering Adult Social Care, using the online form or by calling 01708 432000. Our Havering home care page explains how the council works across the whole borough.

Coming home from Queen's or King George

Most people in Collier Row are admitted to Queen's Hospital on Rom Valley Way, a short bus ride south. Some, being on Romford's western side, go to King George Hospital in Goodmayes instead. Both are run by the same NHS trust. When a discharge date is being discussed, call us early so we can say honestly whether a live-in carer can be there for the first night home. See our hospital discharge care page for what that support involves.

Live-in care and respite in RM5

Distance from Lewisham makes no difference to live-in care. The carer lives in, has their own room and takes daily breaks, which a family member or a short sitting arrangement covers. Where both partners in a Collier Row semi need help, one carer can often support them both.

If a husband, wife or adult child is doing the caring, respite care lets them rest or go into hospital themselves while a carer stays in the home. Havering's carers' support service, run by Imago (0300 011 1965), offers advice and carers' assessments for carers aged 16 and over.

Collier Row FAQs

Collier Row questions

Questions families ask us about Collier Row. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Do you cover Rise Park, Chase Cross and Havering Park as well?

Yes, on the same basis as Collier Row itself, including the RM1 side of Rise Park: live-in care anywhere, and visits only when a carer can reach you. If you are over the line in Havering-atte-Bower or towards Hainault, call and ask.

Mum's bathroom is upstairs and she can't manage the stairs any more. What can we do?

In a 1930s semi with the only bathroom upstairs, short-term options include a commode and strip washes downstairs. Longer term, the council's occupational therapy service can assess for a stairlift or other adaptations. We will talk it through at the free assessment and fit the care plan around whatever is decided.

Can a carer take Dad to his appointments at Queen's Hospital?

A live-in carer can go with him. The 175 and 365 buses run between Collier Row and Queen's Hospital, or the carer can go with him in the family car or a taxi. We agree how appointments will work when we write the care plan.

My wife is under Saint Francis Hospice. Can you care for her at home?

Saint Francis Hospice is just north of Collier Row in Havering-atte-Bower, and its teams, the GP and the district nurses handle the clinical side. Our palliative care covers the day-to-day personal care and company, usually as live-in care, so she can stay at home.

Is there any help before a full council assessment?

Havering suggests talking to a Local Area Coordinator, who can point people to community support in their area. That can sit alongside a request for a needs assessment.
