Home Care in Wapping
Care at home in E1W, for people in the warehouse flats along Wapping High Street, the riverside blocks and the council estates between Wapping Lane and Shadwell Basin.
Yes, we provide home care in Wapping, both visiting care and live-in care. From Lewisham, a carer takes the DLR to Shadwell and then one stop on the Overground, roughly half an hour, so regular visits are realistic here, depending on whether a carer is free at your times. Everything starts with a free assessment in the person's home and a written care plan.
A quieter corner of Tower Hamlets
Wapping is a narrow strip between The Highway and the Thames, with St Katharine Docks at its western edge and Shadwell Basin to the east. The old warehouses on Wapping High Street, once part of the London Docks, are flats now, and newer riverside blocks fill many of the gaps. Inland, behind the river frontage, are the council estates where long-standing Wapping families live. Tobacco Dock, the Grade I listed warehouse by The Highway, sits between the two.
That split shapes care. Warehouse flats and modern blocks mostly have lifts and level floors, which helps with wheelchairs, hoists and getting home from hospital. They also tend to have gates, fobs, intercoms and porters, and carers cannot work round those on the day; access goes into the care plan before visit one. The estate flats are smaller, some in walk-up blocks, and that is where stairs and bathroom space come into the plan.
Getting carers into E1W
- Wapping station is on the Overground's Windrush line, in zone 2, with trains north to Shadwell and Whitechapel and south under the river through the Thames Tunnel to Rotherhithe. You reach the narrow platforms by a lift or stairs in the tunnel's original shaft.
- Shadwell, at the north-east edge, has both the DLR and the Overground. Tower Gateway DLR is a walk from the western end, past St Katharine Docks.
- Buses 100 and D3 serve Wapping station.
- Parking is controlled on-street, and parking inside a private riverside development is up to its management, so a relative who drives over should check the building's rules as well as the council's visitor vouchers.
The local GP. The Wapping Group Practice is at Wapping Health Centre, 22 Wapping Lane, E1W 2RL. Its NHS listing has the contact details. With permission, we keep in touch with the surgery and the district nurses about changes we notice.
Can I arrange private home care in Wapping without going through the council?
Yes. You can contact us directly, we assess for free, and we give a written quote based on the number and length of visits. There is no need to wait for a council assessment.
It is still worth asking the council. Tower Hamlets Connect (0300 303 6070, or the online self-assessment form) is the route to a Care Act assessment, and Tower Hamlets has stopped charging for care in the home that it arranges for eligible residents. Council funding can be paid as a direct payment to use with an agency you choose. Our Tower Hamlets home care page explains the council route, and the paying for care guide covers NHS Continuing Healthcare.
Live-in care by the river
A live-in carer needs a spare bedroom, so the first question is whether the flat has one. If it does, live-in care suits someone who needs help at night, or a couple who want to stay together at home. The carer needs a proper daily break, and we plan for that in the rota. Because the carer lives in, travel to Wapping stops being a factor.
Respite for Wapping families
If you are the one doing the caring, respite care can give you a regular afternoon, a week of extra visits, or a live-in carer while you are away. Carers Centre Tower Hamlets in Stepney can help you ask for a carer's needs assessment.

Wapping questions
Questions families ask us about Wapping. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's warehouse flat has a porter and a fob-only lift. Will carers be able to get up?
Yes, once it is arranged. Before the first visit we agree access with you and the building management, whether that is registering carers at the desk, a spare fob or an approved key safe, and write it into the care plan.
Can a carer take my father along the river?
Yes. The Thames Path runs through Wapping, and a companionship visit can include a walk, a wheelchair outing or a coffee, as long as it is in his care plan.
We live in Rotherhithe, across the river. Can we still help organise care for Dad in Wapping?
Of course. The Overground links the two in one stop. Dad's needs assessment comes from Tower Hamlets because he lives in Wapping, but you can make the calls and join the assessment if he agrees.
Can a carer collect Mum's prescriptions from Wapping Lane?
Yes, if it is agreed and written into her care plan. Collecting repeat prescriptions and prompting her to take them is part of our medication support, and we record what was collected.
