Home Care in Mile End, E1 and E3
Visiting care, dementia support, live-in care and respite for Mile End households, from the Georgian terraces around Tredegar Square to the Ocean Estate and the streets behind Mile End Hospital.
Yes, we provide home care in Mile End. Live-in care is available at any address with a spare bedroom. Visiting care depends on carer availability for your times; from our Lewisham office Mile End is a DLR ride and a change onto the Tube, so ask and we will tell you honestly. Everything starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
Two postcodes, one neighbourhood
Mile End straddles E1 and E3. Roughly, the streets around Bancroft Road, Globe Road and the hospital are E1, and the Tredegar estate streets east of Grove Road, running towards Bow, are E3. Both are Tower Hamlets.
The housing makes for different care plans. The Tredegar Square conservation area, between Bow Road, Grove Road and the railway, is three-storey Georgian terraces with basements: usually a spare room for a live-in carer, but often a bathroom at the top of steep original stairs. The Ocean Estate, south of Mile End Road on Harford Street and Ernest Street, is mostly blocks of council flats, where getting out at all depends on the lift. We check stairs, lifts, the bathroom and door entry at the assessment, before any personal care starts.
Mile End Hospital is a local health centre in all but name
Mile End Hospital on Bancroft Road has no A&E, so an emergency admission goes to the Royal London in Whitechapel. But much outpatient care is within walking distance: blood tests, diabetes and respiratory clinics, adult therapies, a community diagnostic centre, the XX Place Health GP practice and East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) services.
Two ELFT services there matter for home care:
- The Diagnostic Memory Clinic, at the Robinson Centre, 275 Bancroft Road. Referral comes from the GP through the community mental health team. A carer can go with your relative and help them remember what was said, which is part of good dementia care.
- The Community Learning Disability Service at Beaumont House on the same site (020 7771 5500), a joint ELFT and council team for adults with a learning disability.
Getting to Bancroft Road. Stepney Green station is about an eight-minute walk from the hospital and Mile End station about thirteen. The 25 and 205 stop on Mile End Road, the 277, 339 and D6 on Grove Road, and the D7 starts at Mile End station.
Can I get council-funded home care in Mile End?
Possibly. Tower Hamlets decides after a Care Act needs assessment, and the front door is Tower Hamlets Connect. You can fill in the online self-assessment form, which the council says is the quickest route, or phone 0300 303 6070 on weekdays. A relative can do this. If your relative is eligible, a financial assessment sets what they contribute, and the personal budget can be taken as a direct payment to arrange care with an agency like us. People whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare. If you pay privately, we quote in writing after the assessment. Our Tower Hamlets home care page covers the borough-wide process.
After a stay at the Royal London
The council's hospital social work team at the Royal London plans discharges for Tower Hamlets residents. When someone comes home with new care needs, the council's hospital page says care is arranged for four weeks, funded by the NHS, and then reviewed. If you want us involved, tell us while the discharge is still being planned. See hospital discharge support.
Live-in care
A live-in carer needs their own bedroom, which a Tredegar estate house or a larger conversion will usually have. In a one-bedroom estate flat, visits are the practical option. One live-in carer can support a couple, with personal care for one partner and lighter help for the other.
Respite for a family carer
If you look after someone in Mile End, ask the council for a Carer Needs Assessment. It can lead to a carer's direct payment for short breaks. The Carers Centre Tower Hamlets in Stepney (020 7790 1765) will help you fill it in. Respite from us can be a sit-in while you go out, a slow walk with your relative along the canal through Mile End Park, or a live-in carer for a week or two while you are away.

Mile End questions
Questions families ask us about Mile End. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum has a memory clinic appointment at the Robinson Centre. Can a carer take her?
Yes. We can book a visit that covers getting ready, the journey to Bancroft Road, the appointment and the trip home. Give us the date, and ask if you would like the carer to note what the clinic says.
Dad lives in a Georgian house near Tredegar Square and can't manage the stairs to the bathroom. What can be done?
It is common in these houses. At the assessment we look at keeping essentials on one floor, strip washing in the meantime, and asking the council for an occupational therapist visit about rails or a stairlift. The square is a conservation area and some houses are listed, so check any building work with the council's planning team first.
The lift in our Ocean Estate block keeps breaking down. Will carers still come?
Yes, carers can use the stairs, but your relative may not, which affects appointments and outings. The care plan should cover lift outages, and repeated breakdowns should go to your landlord.
My adult son has a learning disability. Is your home care right for him?
We support adults with personal care at home and can talk it through with you. His main route to council support is the Community Learning Disability Service at Beaumont House, Mile End Hospital, on 020 7771 5500, which can assess him and work with whichever provider you choose.
