Home Care in Limehouse

Visiting and live-in care in E14, from Narrow Street and the flats around Limehouse Basin to the estates either side of Commercial Road.

Yes, we provide home care in Limehouse, and it is one of the simplest parts of Tower Hamlets for us to reach: the DLR runs straight from Lewisham to Limehouse in about 20 to 25 minutes. Carers can visit for personal care, medication, meals and company, or a live-in carer can move in. We start with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Is Limehouse close enough for visiting care from Lewisham?

Yes. Limehouse and Westferry are both on the DLR line between Bank and Lewisham, so a carer coming from south-east London does not need to change trains. Limehouse station also has c2c trains to Fenchurch Street, step-free access to the DLR platforms by lift, and buses 15, 115, 135 and D3. That matters most for early morning and late evening calls, which are the hardest to staff anywhere. We can only confirm particular times once we know a carer is free for them, so call with the pattern you need and we will give you a straight answer.

From Narrow Street to the Commercial Road estates

Limehouse is two places sharing a postcode. Down by the river, Narrow Street keeps a short row of 18th-century houses next to converted warehouses and newer flats around Limehouse Basin, the old Regent's Canal Dock that is now a marina. North of the Limehouse Link tunnel and either side of Commercial Road, most older residents live in council estates and walk-up blocks built after the war.

Each brings its own practical questions. A warehouse conversion usually has a lift, but the front door may be behind a gate, a fob and a concierge desk, so access has to be arranged before the first visit. A walk-up block has no lift at all, which can leave someone housebound after a fall or a hospital stay. Old terraces bring steep stairs. We look at how the person gets in and out of the building as well as around the flat.

Water on three sides. The Thames Path runs along the riverfront, the Regent's Canal meets the Basin at Commercial Road Lock, and the Limehouse Cut heads east towards the Lea. For someone who has been stuck indoors, a slow walk along the towpath with a companion is a proper outing, and it can be written into the care plan. Hawksmoor's St Anne's church is a short walk inland.

Arranging council support

Limehouse is in Tower Hamlets. To ask the council for help, contact Tower Hamlets Connect on 0300 303 6070 or start from the council's support from adult social care page. A Care Act assessment follows, sometimes after a short spell of reablement. If the council funds care, a direct payment lets you choose the agency, and the council's Direct Payment Support Service on 020 7364 4166 helps with setting it up. The Tower Hamlets home care page sets out the borough route and charging.

If memory is the worry, the GP can refer to the NHS Diagnostic Memory Clinic at Mile End Hospital, run by East London NHS Foundation Trust. Our dementia care can support someone at home before and after a diagnosis.

When visits aren't enough

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own. In the riverside flats and the older houses that is often available; in estate flats it depends on the household. Live-in care covers nights, and one carer can support a couple. Because the carer moves in, it does not depend on the journey from Lewisham at all.

A break for the family carer

Respite care can be a few hours a week, a block of extra visits, or a live-in carer for a fortnight while you go away. The council's carer's needs assessment can lead to carers' direct payments towards breaks.

Limehouse FAQs

Limehouse questions

Questions families ask us about Limehouse. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My mother's building near the Basin has a concierge and fob entry. How do carers get in?

We sort it out before the first visit. Usually that means registering carers with the concierge or building management, or a key safe where the building allows one. We record the arrangement in the care plan so every carer knows it.

Dad is on the top floor of a walk-up block off Commercial Road. Can he still have care at home?

Yes. Carers use the stairs. The bigger issue is whether he can get out, so we plan around appointments and shopping, and you can ask the council about rehousing or adaptations if the stairs have become impossible.

Is Limehouse the same as Poplar for your purposes?

Both are E14 and both are in Tower Hamlets, so the council route is the same. Limehouse runs from the Basin and Narrow Street up to Commercial Road; Poplar starts further east. We cover both.

Can a carer go with my husband to the memory clinic at Mile End Hospital?

Yes, if it is arranged in advance and written into his care plan. Tell us the appointment date and we will plan the visit around it.
