Live-in Care in Bermondsey
One carer living with a Bermondsey couple, or with one person on their own, so they can stay in the flat off Jamaica Road or Southwark Park Road they have known for decades.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Bermondsey, in both SE1 and SE16. A trained carer moves in, with a bedroom of their own, and gives one person or a couple daily help with personal care, medication, cooking, housework and getting out, and a replacement carer covers their breaks and holidays. Before anything starts, Jackie, our registered manager, does a free home assessment and we agree a written care plan.
Keeping a Bermondsey couple at home together
Some older Bermondsey couples have lived on the Dickens Estate or in the blocks along Jamaica Road for most of their lives, and still do their shopping at The Blue on Southwark Park Road. When one partner needs care and the other can no longer do the lifting, the usual alternatives split them up or move them away from all that.
A single live-in carer can support both: full personal care for the one who needs it, meals and shopping for two, and someone in the flat overnight so the other partner can sleep. We assess each person separately and quote for the household. If both partners need two people to move them, or someone is needed awake through the night, one carer is not enough and we will say so.
Which Bermondsey homes have space for a carer to live in?
- Walk-up and deck-access blocks. Two- and three-bedroom flats and maisonettes give a carer their own room. In a block without a lift, a stairlift cannot go on the shared stairs, so if the person can no longer manage them, a ground-floor transfer may be worth raising with the housing office.
- Victorian terraces south of Jamaica Road and towards South Bermondsey, where a back bedroom often works for a carer but the bathroom may be upstairs.
- Converted warehouses near Shad Thames and Bermondsey Street have lifts and wide doors, which suits a wheelchair or hoist. Check the number of bedrooms, and whether the lease or building rules say anything about someone living in.
With only one bedroom, a carer cannot live in. Visiting home care in Bermondsey is the honest answer then.
Changeovers by Jubilee line or London Bridge
Replacement carers usually arrive by train. Bermondsey station on the Jubilee line is in the middle of the area, London Bridge has the Northern line and Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink trains, and South Bermondsey on Southern serves the southern streets.
Driving is more complicated here. The streets near London Bridge are at the edge of the Congestion Charge zone, and the whole borough is in the ULEZ. If the person lives on a council estate, they can buy estate visitor vouchers for a carer's car on changeover day; on a street in a controlled parking zone, Southwark visitor's permits are the equivalent.
The carer's break: The Blue and Southwark Park
For the carer's daily break, two good places are within a short walk of most homes off Southwark Park Road:
- Blue Anchor Library, in Market Place by The Blue. It is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, so plan breaks on those days elsewhere.
- Southwark Park, at the eastern end of Southwark Park Road, with the Ada Salter Garden, a boating lake, a café and the Southwark Park Galleries.
Both work for the person too. A walk round the Ada Salter Garden or a coffee by the lake with the carer can be part of a good day.
Back from St Thomas', with check-ups at Guy's. Guy's has no A&E, so emergency admissions from Bermondsey usually go to St Thomas' in Lambeth, while follow-up clinics are often at Guy's on the western edge of the area. A live-in carer can go to those appointments, from the walk or one Jubilee line stop to London Bridge to sitting in with the doctor. If discharge is being planned, tell the ward you want live-in care and call us with the date. See hospital discharge support.
How much does live-in care cost in Bermondsey?
We cannot put a price on a page, because it depends on the support needed, whether it is for one person or two, and what happens at night. You get a written quote after the free assessment. Bermondsey is in Southwark, so the council can assess needs and means-test a contribution, and can pay its share as a direct payment used for live-in care; NHS Continuing Healthcare pays in full where needs are mainly health needs. Our Southwark live-in care page covers the council route and the official thresholds, and live-in care across London explains the arrangement itself.

Bermondsey families ask about live-in care
Questions families ask us about Bermondsey. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum and Dad both need some help. Do we need two live-in carers?
Usually not. One carer can support a couple if one partner needs most of the help and nights are mostly settled. If both need two people for transfers, or there is help needed all night, we will explain what extra cover is needed after the assessment.
Dad has a warehouse flat near Shad Thames with a concierge. Can a carer live there?
If there is a second bedroom, yes. Let the managing agent and concierge know a carer is living in, and arrange fobs for both the live-in carer and whoever covers their breaks.
Can we use estate visitor vouchers for the carer?
Yes, if the person is an estate tenant or leaseholder and the carer brings a car on changeover day. The vouchers are bought by the resident. A live-in carer who arrives by Jubilee line does not need one.
Can the carer take Dad to his clinic at Guy's?
Yes. Getting him there, staying with him, and making a note of any changes to his medication for the care plan are part of the role. Tell us his regular appointments at the assessment.
