Live-in Care in Walworth

A carer who lives in your relative's SE17 flat or house, between the Walworth Road and Burgess Park, so they can stay near East Street and the neighbours they know.

Yes, we can provide live-in care in Walworth wherever the home has a bedroom the carer can use. The carer moves in, helps with personal care, medicines, meals and getting out, and is there at night, with a replacement carer for their time off. We begin with a free home assessment, where we look at the flat, the stairs or lift, and how a carer will get in and out.

Counting the bedrooms in an SE17 home

Walworth's housing is mostly council and housing association flats, from the large post-war estates to the newer blocks replacing parts of the Aylesbury, with streets of Victorian terraces in between. For live-in care, what matters is the bedroom count:

  • Two or more bedrooms. Live-in care can work, even if the second room is small, as long as a single bed fits and the door closes.
  • A maisonette over two floors. Some estate homes have the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. If your relative can no longer manage the inside stairs, ask the council's occupational therapists whether a stairlift is possible, or whether a move downstairs makes sense.
  • One bedroom. A carer cannot live in. The options are visiting care in Walworth, asking your landlord about a transfer to a two-bedroom home, or asking the council about its flexicare schemes.

If the second room is full of furniture, it only needs to be ready by the day the carer arrives.

When the lift is out of order

On a deck-access or high-rise block, a broken lift affects live-in care differently from visits. Your relative is not left alone, because the carer is already upstairs with them, but the carer cannot easily take them out, and the carer's own break may have to be spent nearby. We plan for this at the assessment: what happens to a hospital appointment if the lift fails, how deliveries of equipment or a hospital bed get up, and who the carer reports repeated faults to.

Changeover day with no station of its own

Walworth has no Tube or rail station. Carers arriving for a placement usually come to Elephant & Castle at the north end, on the Northern and Bakerloo lines and Thameslink, or to Kennington on the Northern line, just over the boundary in Lambeth, then walk or take one of the many buses along Walworth Road.

If a relative drives the carer in, the street is likely to be in one of the Walworth parking zones. Southwark's parking zones list shows zones M1 (Walworth), M2 (South East Walworth), J (South Walworth) and E (West Walworth) all operating Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, so an evening or weekend changeover needs no permit. Estate car parks are different: they run their own permit schemes, separate from the street zones, so check the signs or ask the estate office before parking there.

The carer's break: Burgess Park, the library and East Street

A live-in carer needs a daily break, and Walworth gives them somewhere real to go.

Burgess Park runs along the southern edge. It is open at all times, and Chumleigh Gardens inside it has gardens planted in English, Asian, Mediterranean, Oriental and Caribbean styles, with toilets and an accessible tarmac route to reach them.

Una Marson Library on Thurlow Street has flat access and an accessible toilet, and is a quiet place for the carer to read or for the two of them to spend an hour. East Street market, open every day except Monday, is close by for a short trip together.

Coming home from St Thomas', Guy's or King's

Walworth patients may be admitted to St Thomas' in Lambeth, King's on Denmark Hill, or treated at Guy's. Whichever it is, the hospital team plans the discharge, and Southwark's reablement team may provide short-term support. A live-in carer suits a Walworth discharge when the flat is up a lift and along a deck: someone is there to help with the first trips out, to notice if things are getting worse, and to keep follow-up appointments on track. Call us while the discharge is still being planned.

How much does live-in care cost for a Walworth council tenant?

We quote in writing after the assessment, based on the care needed and whether it is for one person or a couple. Being a council tenant does not stop the council helping. Southwark assesses your relative's needs and then their income and savings; the council's contribution calculator gives a rough estimate first. Any council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used with an agency. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may fund the care in full. Our Southwark live-in care page has the referral route and capital limits, and live-in care in London explains how a placement runs.

Walworth FAQs

Walworth live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Walworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum has a two-bedroom maisonette on an estate but can't climb her inside stairs. Can a carer still live in?

Possibly. A bed and commode downstairs, with the carer sleeping upstairs, can work if there is a toilet on the lower floor. If there isn't, we will talk about a stairlift assessment or a transfer before we agree a start.

Does a live-in carer change Dad's council tenancy?

The tenancy stays in his name; the carer is there to work and has no claim on the flat. Let his housing officer know a carer is staying, so there is no confusion about who is living there.

Where can the carer go on their break if the lift is broken?

If your relative is safe to be left, the carer can still take the stairs and go out. If they are not, a family member covers, or the break is moved to later that day. Repeated lift faults are something we raise with you and the landlord.

Can the carer take my aunt to East Street market?

Yes, if she would like to go and it is safe. Market trips are written into her care plan, with how long she is comfortable out and how she gets there.

Dad uses the Southwark Wellbeing Hub on Bradenham Close. Will a live-in carer work alongside it?

Yes. With his agreement we can include anyone supporting him there in the assessment, so his care plan fits with the help he already gets.
