Live-in Care in Bethnal Green

A carer who moves into the spare room of an E2 estate flat or terrace, so someone who has lived around Bethnal Green Road for decades can stay there with help all day.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Bethnal Green. Jackie, our registered manager, or a senior member of the team visits for a free assessment, looks at the room the carer would sleep in, and writes a care plan; then a trained carer moves in to help with washing, meals, medication and company, with a daily break and a proper night's sleep. If the flat cannot take a second adult, we will tell you at that visit.

Is there room for a live-in carer in a Bethnal Green flat?

That is the deciding question here, and the answer depends on which kind of Bethnal Green home it is:

  • Boundary Estate walk-ups. The red-brick blocks around Arnold Circus date from the 1890s. Flats are often compact, so a second bedroom may be small; we check that a bed, a chest of drawers and a closing door all fit.
  • Post-war estates such as Cranbrook and Avebury. A two-bedroom flat that a widowed parent now has to themselves may already have the spare room a carer needs, as long as nobody else is sleeping in it.
  • Victorian terraces split into flats. The upper flat may have two rooms, but everything else in it sits at the top of a steep internal stair.

In a one-bedroom flat, live-in care does not work, and a sofa bed in the lounge is not a fair substitute for the carer or the person. The honest alternatives are regular visits (see home care in Bethnal Green), a day centre place combined with visits, or asking the council about extra care housing. Our Tower Hamlets live-in care page explains how extra care schemes work.

No lift, one lift: what it means for a carer who lives in

On a walk-up landing, a live-in carer is the person who carries the shopping up, steadies someone on the stairs and is there when getting out becomes too much for a day. What a carer cannot change is the stairwell itself. A hospital bed, a hoist or a riser-recliner still has to come up those stairs, and a stairlift in a shared stairwell needs the landlord's agreement. Raise this with the occupational therapist before discharge or before equipment is ordered.

In a tower, the risk is a lift out of service. With someone living in, a lift failure means a day indoors with company, not a missed visit.

Changeover day: Central line, Weaver line and zone A

When one live-in carer hands over to the next, both are at the flat together for the handover, often with suitcases. Bethnal Green station is on the Central line, and the Overground Weaver line stops at Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath, so a carer arriving by train or bus has an easy walk.

If the incoming carer drives, on-street parking in Bethnal Green is in the council's zone A, controlled on weekdays from 8.30am to 5.30pm, with some sub-zones also controlled on Sunday mornings or on Saturdays. The resident can issue a digital visitor voucher, and these are free for residents aged 60 or over. The council's free voucher for a daily carer is meant for a carer who lives at a different address, so it is not the route for a live-in carer.

Where the carer spends their break

Each day the carer has protected time off, written into the care plan. Bethnal Green has good places for it within a few minutes' walk:

  • Bethnal Green Gardens, next to the Tube station, with public toilets and the Stairway to Heaven memorial to the 1943 disaster at the station.
  • Bethnal Green Library, which stands in the same gardens on Cambridge Heath Road.
  • Bethnal Green Road and its market, and Columbia Road flower market on a Sunday.

On days when the person goes to a day centre, the break can be longer. Two are in E2: the Sundial Centre on Shipton Street and the Russia Lane centre for people with moderate to severe dementia. Places come through adult social care, and the carer can have the person ready and waiting for the transport.

Households that run their own way

A live-in carer becomes part of the household, so how that household works matters more than it does for visits. In a Bangladeshi family home that might mean halal cooking, prayer times, Ramadan and a female carer for washing. Put all of it into the assessment; we match as closely as we can and say before anyone arrives if we cannot. Where a couple share a two-bedroom flat, one carer can look after both of them, as long as the second bedroom is the carer's.

Coming home from the Royal London. For Bethnal Green, the acute hospital is usually the Royal London on Whitechapel Road. The council's hospital social work team there plans the discharge. A live-in carer can be at the flat when the hospital transport arrives and stay through the first nights home. Tell the ward early that live-in care is the plan.

Paying for live-in care from an E2 address

First check the council tax bill: part of E2 belongs to Hackney, and that council would do the assessment. On the Tower Hamlets side, the route is Tower Hamlets Connect (0300 303 6070). Where needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which ELFT assesses for borough residents. If you pay privately, we give a written quote after the free assessment. The detail is on our Tower Hamlets page and in our wider guide to live-in care in London.

Live-in care in Bethnal Green: questions

Questions families ask us about Bethnal Green. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's Boundary Estate flat has a box room. Is it big enough for a live-in carer?

Possibly. The carer needs a single bed, somewhere to keep clothes and a door that shuts. We measure the room at the assessment and tell you plainly if it will not work.

Dad has a day centre place. Does a live-in carer mean he loses it?

No. A day centre place is arranged through adult social care, and having a carer living in does not cancel it. The two fit together: he keeps the company and activities, and the carer uses those hours for a longer break.

The lift in Gran's tower keeps breaking. Is live-in care still sensible?

It can make lift breakdowns easier to live with, since someone is always there. Ask the landlord about the repair record too, because a long outage still stops her getting out and stops equipment being delivered.

Can the carer take her to Columbia Road on a Sunday?

Yes, if it is safe for her and planned into the care plan, with the carer's own break at another time that day. Crowded Sunday mornings may suit a wheelchair better than a walking frame.
