Live-in Care in Poplar

A carer who moves into a Poplar flat when someone comes home from hospital, or when visits no longer cover the day, so they can stay near Chrisp Street with help on hand.

Yes, we arrange live-in care in Poplar, including for people coming home from hospital. After a free assessment in the flat, we write a care plan and introduce a trained carer who moves into the spare bedroom, supports one person or a couple, and takes a daily break and a full night's sleep. Poplar is a short DLR ride from our Lewisham office, so the assessment and later reviews are easy for us to get to.

Leaving the Royal London for a Poplar flat

For a Poplar address, the acute hospital is usually the Royal London in Whitechapel, a few stops up the road. The first days back in a flat are when people are least steady: new tablets, a frame they are not used to, and a bathroom that suddenly feels far away. A live-in carer is there through the day for all of that, and in the flat overnight, so nobody is waiting for the next visit.

The council's hospital social work team, based at the Royal London, plans discharges for borough residents. For new needs it can arrange four weeks of NHS-funded care before a review. To have a live-in carer at home for the discharge:

  1. Call us as soon as a discharge date is talked about, and tell the ward that live-in care is the plan.
  2. We assess, at the flat or on the ward, and check the spare room and the lift.
  3. Any equipment, such as a hospital bed or commode, is arranged through the ward or an occupational therapist and delivered before or on the day.
  4. The carer is at the flat to meet the transport and settle the person in.

We will be honest about when we can start; we do not promise a date until we have a carer matched. See also our hospital discharge support.

Lansbury low-rise or a tower: will the carer have a room?

Poplar's homes are mostly flats on post-war estates: the low-rise Lansbury around Chrisp Street, which went up as the 1951 Festival of Britain's "live architecture" show, and the taller post-war blocks to the east. Much of it is run by housing associations, including Poplar HARCA.

A two-bedroom flat can work well, but the second room may belong to a grandchild or hold years of belongings, and clearing it comes first. Then two practical points. Let the landlord know that a carer is staying as part of a care arrangement, so nobody mistakes them for a lodger. And give the carer their own key or fob, because they are now coming and going every day. If the flat has one bedroom only, live-in care is not possible, and visiting home care in Poplar is the place to start.

How much does live-in care cost in Poplar?

We do not give figures by phone. After the assessment we quote in writing, and the price depends on the level of care, whether it is for one person or a couple, and whether there is any night-time help.

For council help, the person needs a Care Act assessment through Tower Hamlets Connect (0300 303 6070, or its online form). The council's paying for care page says care in the home stopped being a chargeable service on 1 April 2025, and that for chargeable services the means-test threshold is £23,250 in savings and assets. Ask the social worker whether a council-funded package could take the form of live-in care, or a direct payment towards it. For mainly health-related needs after a hospital stay, ask the ward about NHS Continuing Healthcare, assessed in this borough by ELFT's continuing healthcare service. The Tower Hamlets live-in care page sets out the options at more length.

Getting the next carer in

At each changeover the new carer arrives before the outgoing one leaves. In Poplar that is easy by DLR: All Saints, Poplar, Langdon Park and Blackwall stations are all within reach, about 20 minutes from Lewisham, and buses run along East India Dock Road. A carer who drives needs to know that the Chrisp Street part of zone B3 is controlled Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, according to the council's parking zones list, and that estate car parks have their own rules.

An hour off around Chrisp Street

The care plan sets a protected daily break for the carer. Nearby options:

  • Bartlett Park on Lindfield Street, beside the Limehouse Cut, with a canalside path and a café at the neighbouring Poplar Union centre.
  • Idea Store Chrisp Street, the council library and learning centre for this part of Poplar.
  • Chrisp Street Market itself, which is also a good outing for the person when they are well enough.

Someone recovering after a hospital stay may not be safe alone even for an hour at first. In that case a relative can cover the break, or we plan it in, until they are steadier.

Couples in Poplar. If one partner has just come out of hospital and the other is frail too, one live-in carer can support both: personal care for the one who needs it, and meals, shopping and a hand on the stairs for the other, in the flat they already share.

Poplar FAQs

Poplar live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Poplar. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can the live-in carer start on the day Dad is discharged from the Royal London?

That is the aim, if we have the assessment done and a carer matched before the date. Call us as early as you can; if the date moves, tell us and the ward together.

Does Poplar HARCA need to approve a live-in carer?

A carer staying as part of a care arrangement is not a tenant, but check the tenancy agreement and tell the landlord anyway. It avoids questions about who is living in the flat, and you may need a fob or key for the block.

Mum's room is full of the grandchildren's things. How much of it has to go?

Enough for a bed, somewhere for the carer's clothes and a door that closes. The rest can stay in a cupboard or another room. It is worth clearing it before the discharge date, because it is hard to do with someone just home from the ward.

Can the carer take her to Chrisp Street Market in her wheelchair?

Yes, once she is well enough and it is in her care plan. The trip counts as care time; the carer's own break is taken separately.
