Live-in Care in Crayford

A carer living in your DA1 home, from the semis off Crayford Way to the roads by Shenstone Park, so that someone coming home from Darent Valley, or no longer safe on their own, has help in the house through the day.

We can provide live-in care anywhere in Crayford, from the streets around the station and Crayford Way to the homes up towards Shenstone Park. A trained carer moves into your spare bedroom to look after one person or a couple, and we arrange the changeover, the carer's daily break and their holiday cover. Because the carer lives in, Crayford's distance from our Lewisham office does not limit what we can offer. It starts with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Discharged from a Kent hospital into Bexley's care

For many Crayford households the nearest acute hospital is Darent Valley, run by Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust and just over the border in Kent. The patient goes home to a London borough, so the ward is planning a discharge into Bexley's social care, with Bexley's Home First approach behind it. The council responsible is Bexley, whatever the DA1 address says.

Live-in care suits this kind of discharge. The first days at home are when needs shift most: a person who managed the stairs on the ward may not manage their own, and medicines change after the consultant's review. A carer already in the house sees those changes as they happen. Call us as soon as a discharge date is mentioned, because matching the right carer takes planning; our hospital discharge page lists the questions to put to the ward.

Family can get to the hospital without a car: the 428 bus runs from the Waterside and Crayford Town Hall stops through Dartford to its own Darent Valley Hospital stop, which helps with outpatient follow-ups later on.

Is there room for a live-in carer in a Crayford home?

In most of the town's houses, yes. Crayford is largely interwar and post-war semis and terraces, and a three-bedroom house where the family has grown up usually has a bedroom that can be cleared. The carer needs a bed, space for clothes and a door that shuts, along with use of the kitchen and bathroom.

Flats are where it gets difficult. With two bedrooms, the second can become the carer's room; with only one, live-in care is off the table, since a carer cannot live out of the lounge. The realistic choices then are visiting care in Crayford, or the person staying for a while with a relative who has a spare room. In a flat, check that a wheelchair or hospital bed will fit into the lift before discharge day.

Changeover at Crayford station

Carers usually come and go by rail. Crayford is on Southeastern's Sidcup line, with direct trains to and from Charing Cross, some running via Lewisham, and eastbound trains to Dartford and Gravesend. The station has ticket barriers, so the carer needs a valid ticket to get out. We send the incoming carer the walk from the station to your front door before they travel, and wherever possible the outgoing carer hands over in person: the medicines, the care plan, how the nights have been, and anything the family wants changed.

Crayford's parking zone runs for two hours. Zone E, around the station and town centre, is controlled Monday to Friday from 9am to 11am. It takes in Station Road, Crayford Road, Heath Road, Dale Road, Mount Road and the Heathlee roads, among others; Bexley's CPZ list has every road. If a carer comes by car and you live inside the zone, buy visitor scratch cards well before changeover day, because the council posts them out after processing the application.

Time out: the Cray, the library and Hall Place

A live-in carer has a protected break every day, and it works best out of the house. Crayford has good places close by:

  • Waterside Gardens, the small park overlooking the River Cray in the town centre, for a sit by the water.
  • Crayford Library in Town Hall Square, with the post office inside it. Joining Bexley Libraries is free, and the carer does not have to live in the borough.
  • Hall Place, on Bourne Road between Crayford and Bexley, where the gardens along the Cray are free to enter and there is a café.

Outside the break, the same places can be part of the person's own week: an afternoon in the Hall Place gardens, Sunday at St Paulinus or a trip to the High Street, with no next visit to rush off to. Before the first day, we settle who covers the carer's time out: a partner, a relative, a short visit, or a spell when the person is safe alone.

Who pays for live-in care in Crayford?

Bexley Council, not Kent, assesses Crayford residents and decides on any council contribution, which can be taken as a direct payment and used with us. The route and phone numbers are on our Bexley live-in care page. If someone's needs are mainly health needs, ask the ward or GP about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund the whole package. Otherwise families pay privately; the figure comes in writing once we have done the free assessment. Our London live-in care page explains the arrangement in general.

Live-in care in Crayford: your questions

Questions families ask us about Crayford. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Dad is in Darent Valley and the ward wants a discharge date. Can a live-in carer be there when he gets home?

That is the aim, and the earlier you call the more likely it is. We need to assess his needs, ideally talking to the ward as well, and match a carer before he leaves. We will tell you honestly when we can start once we know what he needs.

Dad has always gone to St Paulinus on a Sunday. Can his live-in carer take him?

Yes, if he is well enough and it is written into his care plan. Tell us the service time at the assessment, and the carer's own break is planned for another part of the day.

Mum's flat by the river has one bedroom. Can live-in care work there?

Sadly not, since the carer has to have their own bedroom. We would talk through visiting care instead, or a stay with family who have a room free.

We live on Heath Road. Will the carer get a parking ticket on changeover day?

Heath Road is in Crayford's zone E, which is only controlled from 9am to 11am on weekdays. Outside those hours anyone can park in the bays; during them, the carer's car needs one of your visitor scratch cards on display.

Can the carer take my husband to Hall Place?

Yes, when he is up to it and the outing is in his care plan. Trips like this count as the carer's work, not their break.
