Live-in Care in Isleworth

Live-in care for TW7, the part of Hounslow with the borough's hospital on its doorstep: a carer in the home for the weeks after West Middlesex, or for good.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Isleworth. A carer comes to live in the home, in a spare bedroom, and supports the person with washing, dressing, meals, medication and company, with someone in the house overnight. We start with a free assessment at home, or by talking to you while your relative is still on the ward, and then agree a written care plan.

Is live-in care a good idea after a stay in West Middlesex?

It can be. A person who went into West Middlesex walking may come home unsteady, on new tablets and nervous of the stairs. A live-in carer covers the parts of the day that short visits miss: the dizzy spell in the afternoon, the evening when nobody feels like cooking, and simply having someone else in the house at night.

It does not have to be permanent. Live-in care can be booked for the first weeks home and then reviewed, stepping down to visits or family support once the person is stronger, or it can carry on if that is what lets them stay at home for good.

Before the ward discharges

  • Tell the discharge staff you are arranging live-in care, and give us their contact details so we can talk to them.
  • Ask whether a hospital bed, commode or frame is being supplied, and make sure it is delivered before the discharge date.
  • If needs have changed a lot, ask the ward for an NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist.
  • Clear the spare room. The carer needs a bed, storage and a door that closes.

If you are the husband, wife or adult child who will share the house with the carer, ask for a carer's assessment in your own right before the discharge. Our hospital discharge support page covers the rest.

Flats, riverside houses and the spare room

Flats are the most common kind of home in Isleworth, which makes the spare room the first question. A two-bedroom flat in a purpose-built block, especially one with a lift, is often an easy place to set up live-in care. A one-bedroom flat is not, and we will say so; visiting care, or a short stay somewhere else while you plan, may be the better route there.

The Victorian and interwar terraces around Spring Grove and off London Road usually have a second bedroom, but also a single bathroom at the top of the stairs. The Georgian houses near Church Street and the river are larger but tall, with stairs on every floor. In either, we plan where the person sleeps and washes in the first weeks, and whether a council occupational therapist should look at rails, a stairlift or a downstairs bedroom.

If you are caring for someone at the end of their life. Some people leave West Middlesex knowing they want to die at home. A live-in carer can live in the home alongside the GP, district nurses and any hospice team. Our palliative care page explains how that works.

Carer changeovers and parking in TW7

Isleworth station, on South Western Railway's Hounslow Loop to Waterloo, is listed by National Rail as step-free to all platforms, though the route may involve long or steep ramps or a walk round by the street. Syon Lane is on the same line, and the northern side of Isleworth is closer to Osterley and Hounslow East on the Piccadilly line.

Parking controls apply around the hospital and the station. If a carer drives in for a changeover, check the hours on the zone entry signs or the council's controlled parking zone map, and keep a book of Hounslow visitor parking sessions ready.

Where the carer goes for their daily break

The carer's break is protected, and the care plan names who is with your relative while they take it. In Isleworth, Isleworth Community Hub and Library is on Twickenham Road, close to the hospital. The riverside by the London Apprentice and All Saints church is a pleasant place to walk, and the gardens at Syon Park, which open from mid-March to the end of October, are next door, with a café and garden centre on the estate.

Once your relative is stronger, the same places become outings for them, at a pace the care plan agrees.

Who pays for live-in care in Isleworth?

We quote in writing after the assessment. Hounslow Council can assess both the person's needs and their finances, and its paying for care guide says people with £23,250 or more in savings or assets usually pay the full cost. Our live-in care in Hounslow page goes through the council route in full. See live-in care in London for how the service works, and home care in Isleworth for visiting care.

Questions about live-in care in Isleworth

Questions families ask us about Isleworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can we have live-in care just for the first few weeks after Dad comes home from West Middlesex?

Yes. We agree a starting period with you and review it as he recovers. If he no longer needs someone there overnight, we can talk about stepping down to visits, where we have carers available.

Mum's flat in Isleworth has only one bedroom. Is there any way to make live-in care work?

Not with a carer living in the flat itself. The options are visiting care, family staying while visits are arranged, or moving her somewhere with a second bedroom for a while. We will talk through which is safest.

I live with my husband and will still be at home. How does a live-in carer fit around us?

The care plan sets out what the carer does and what you would like to keep doing yourself. The carer has their own room and break, and you keep your own routines. For a spouse, having another adult in the house can make the evenings far less lonely.

Dad was in the Lakeside unit at West Middlesex. Can you provide live-in care after a mental health admission?

Possibly. It depends on his needs and on the plan made with his mental health team. We look at both at the assessment and tell you honestly whether live-in care is the right support.
