Live-in Care in Hanworth

One carer living in, so a Hanworth couple or a parent on their own can stay put in TW13, whichever side of the A316 home is on.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Hanworth. A carer moves into the home, with a bedroom of their own, and gives personal care, meals, medication support and company through the day and evening, for one person or for a couple. The first step is a free assessment at home, followed by a written care plan and a carer matched to you.

What does a live-in carer do for a Hanworth couple?

Usually two different jobs in one house. For the partner with the heavier needs, it is washing, dressing, medication and help to move; for the other, it is the cooking, a hand on the stairs and company on trips to West Middlesex. The care plan describes each person's needs separately, and the quote reflects both.

There is a limit. If both partners need two people to move them, or one needs help repeatedly through the night, a single carer cannot do it safely, and we will say so and suggest what would work.

Who sleeps where

For a couple, the bedrooms matter more than usual. If they share a room, a two-bedroom flat or house leaves the second room for the carer. If one partner now needs a profiling bed or sleeps badly, the couple may want separate rooms, and then the carer needs a third. A three-bedroom semi on the Hanworth Park side usually makes that possible; a two-bedroom flat in one of Hanworth's low-rise blocks usually does not. We go through the layout room by room at the assessment, and if a one-bedroom flat cannot take a carer, we will tell you.

Changeovers: the station, buses and parking

Hanworth has no tube. When one carer hands over to the next, the incoming carer usually arrives at Feltham station, just north of Hanworth, which has direct trains from Waterloo and Reading and lifts to its platforms, or travels by bus from Hounslow, Twickenham or Kingston. Most Hanworth streets have unrestricted parking, so a carer who drives can park near the house and the two carers have time to hand over without watching the clock.

When the carer has a holiday. We arrange a relief carer in advance. Alternatively, one partner can have a short stay elsewhere during that time; our Whitton home, just across the River Crane, takes respite stays, depending on the person's needs and whether a room is available.

The carer's time off, and getting out together

A live-in carer needs a daily break away from the house. In Hanworth the obvious place is Hanworth Air Park, where the leisure centre has a swimming pool and gym, and Hanworth Community Hub and Library is in the same building. While the carer is out, a family member, neighbour or short visit can cover, as agreed in the care plan.

For an outing together, Hounslow Heath, off Hanworth Road, is a Local Nature Reserve with a free car park, so a carer with a car can give your relative open space and some air without a long walk.

Coming home from hospital, and care at the end of life

Most Hanworth residents are treated at West Middlesex University Hospital in Isleworth. If someone comes home weaker than they went in, a live-in carer is there for the first night and every day after, and can tell the GP or district nurses quickly if things are slipping. Call us while your relative is still on the ward.

Live-in care can also make it possible for someone to die at home in Hanworth, if that is their wish. The carer provides personal care and company and works alongside the district nurses and palliative team, who manage the medical side. See our palliative care page.

Paying for live-in care

We quote in writing after the free assessment. Hounslow Council may contribute after a needs assessment and means test, and NHS Continuing Healthcare can pay in full where needs are mainly health needs, including fast-track funding at the end of life. Our live-in care in Hounslow page explains the council route. For visiting care, see home care in Hanworth, and for how live-in care works generally, live-in care in London.

Hanworth live-in care: questions

Questions families ask us about Hanworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
We have a two-bedroom semi and sleep in separate rooms. Can we still have a live-in carer?

Only if one room can be freed up for the carer, which would mean sharing again or moving a bed downstairs. We look at the options with you at the assessment.

I look after my wife but I am not well myself. Will the carer help me too?

Yes, if we plan for it. Tell us what you need at the assessment and we will put it in the care plan. If you become ill suddenly, the council's emergency help for carers page explains its carers' emergency card.

Can the carer use the pool at Hanworth Air Park on their break?

Their break is their own time, so they can spend it as they like, including a swim or a visit to the library in the same building. We just agree with you when the break is taken and who covers it.

Dad wants to die at home. Can a live-in carer stay until the end?

Yes, working alongside the district nurses and his GP. Ask the GP or hospital team about fast-track NHS Continuing Healthcare, which can fund care at the end of life.
