Live-in Care in Norbury

One carer in the spare room, so a Norbury couple can stay in the house they have shared for years.

We provide live-in care in Norbury, at the northern tip of Croydon. A carer moves into a spare bedroom and supports one person, or a husband and wife together, with a daily break of their own and cover for holidays. Distance from our Lewisham office makes no difference, because the carer lives in. Everything starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Two people, one carer, one Norbury house

When a couple have shared a Norbury house for decades and one of them starts to need a lot of help, the other tends to become the carer without anyone deciding it, and the strain builds quietly. Live-in care lets the two of them stay together, with someone else taking on the personal care, the cooking and the night-time worry.

The carer's day follows the couple's routine: helping one partner wash and dress, cooking for both, and going with the other to the London Road shops. The partner who is still well gets to be a husband or wife again.

One carer is enough when both people's needs, added together, are manageable for one person by day, and when nights are normally quiet. If both partners need two people to move them, or one needs regular help through the night, a single live-in carer would be overstretched, and we will say so at the assessment.

The semi with a third bedroom, and the cottage without

Norbury's housing gives a fairly clear answer on room for a carer:

  • Edwardian and interwar semis towards Pollards Hill and off the main road usually have three bedrooms.
  • Terraced houses on the side roads typically have two or three bedrooms. If the couple sleep in separate rooms because one of them is restless at night, check that a room is still left for the carer.
  • The cottages of the Norbury Estate are smaller, and some will not have a bedroom to spare. Narrow, turning stairs can also rule out a straight stairlift, so we look at the layout before anyone commits.
  • Flats over the London Road shops and one-bedroom conversions cannot take a live-in carer. For those, visiting care in Norbury is the option to discuss.

Changeover at Norbury station

Live-in carers work in rotations, so at the end of each placement one carer leaves and the next arrives. Norbury station, on Southern, has direct trains to Victoria and to London Bridge, which makes it a straightforward journey with a suitcase.

If the arriving carer drives, the streets near the station and London Road are in Croydon's Norbury permit zone. Croydon's permit pages list no care-worker permit, so the household needs a visitor day permit from the council, or the carer uses a pay-and-display bay. Applying for a visitor day permit needs proof of address, such as a council tax bill, so sort it out before the first changeover.

Where the carer goes on their break

Every live-in carer has protected time off each day, written into the care plan and covered by a relative, a short visit or a group. Places to go nearby:

  • Norbury Library on Beatrice Avenue, with Wi-Fi, study spaces and toilets.
  • Norbury Park, the open green space on what was once the Hermitage sports ground, for a walk in the fresh air.
  • The cafés and shops along London Road.

The person being cared for can go out too, to church or a weekly group, as part of the carer's working day. If faith or cultural routines matter to the couple, such as prayer times, diet or how personal care is given, tell us at the assessment so the care plan and the choice of carer reflect them.

After a stay at Croydon University Hospital

Norbury residents are usually admitted to and discharged from Croydon University Hospital, a straight run down London Road. When a husband or wife comes home weaker than before, the partner at home often cannot manage alone. If you think live-in care is the answer, tell the ward early and call us at the same time, so we can assess before the discharge date is fixed.

How much does live-in care cost in Norbury?

We cannot give a fair figure without seeing the home and the people involved. Care for a couple is priced differently from care for one person, and night-time needs change things again. We quote in writing after the free assessment. If Croydon Council is funding care, its needs and financial assessments come first, and our Croydon live-in care page explains that process. If the address turns out to be on the Lambeth side of SW16, Lambeth Council handles it instead. For needs that are mainly health-related, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our live-in care guide covers how the service works across London.

Live-in care in Norbury: what couples ask

Questions families ask us about Norbury. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I look after my husband but I am not as strong as I was. Can a carer move in for both of us?

Yes, that is exactly what live-in care for a couple is for. The carer takes on his personal care and helps you with whatever you need, so you can step back from the heavy work. We will check at the assessment that one carer can manage both of you safely.

We sleep in separate rooms now. Do we still have space for a live-in carer?

Only if a third bedroom is free. Many Norbury semis have one, but some terraces and estate cottages do not. If there is no room left, we can talk through visiting care instead.

My parents live just over the border on the Streatham side of SW16. Can you still arrange live-in care?

Yes. Live-in care works the same on either side of the boundary, and the carer still arrives by train for each changeover. What changes is the council: on the Lambeth side, needs assessments and any council funding go through Lambeth, which our live-in care in Lambeth page covers.

Does the carer bring their own car?

Usually not. Most arrive by train at Norbury station. If one does drive, they will need your household's visitor day permit or a pay-and-display bay in the Norbury permit zone.

What happens when our carer goes on holiday?

We plan cover in advance and, where we can, introduce the replacement carer before the handover, so neither of you meets a stranger at the door.
