Live-in Care in Streatham, SW16 and SW2

A carer who moves into the spare room of a Streatham house or mansion flat, from the top of Streatham Hill down to the Common, so your relative can stay where they have lived for years.

Yes. In Streatham, live-in care is usually the most dependable way we can help, because it does not depend on carers travelling across south London for each visit: a carer comes to live in the home, helps with washing, dressing, medication, meals and company, and stays through the week while a cover carer handles their time off. It begins with a free home assessment by Jackie, our registered manager, and a written care plan that you agree before anyone moves in.

Room for a carer in a Streatham home

Side-road houses. In the Victorian and interwar houses behind the high road, the carer usually takes a back bedroom upstairs. The question is where the person sleeps. If they can still manage the stairs with help, nothing needs to change. If not, a bed in the front room and a commode or downstairs toilet can be enough while the council's occupational therapists look at a stairlift.

Mansion flats and 1930s blocks. Along Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill, many flats have two bedrooms and a lift, which suits a carer and a wheelchair. Before we start, we check three things: whether the lift reaches the flat's floor without steps, whether the bathroom has room for a carer to help, and how a hoist would fit if one becomes necessary.

One bedroom only. Then live-in care is not workable, and we will say so. Our Streatham home care page explains visiting care, which depends on which carers we have available for the area.

Which hospital will they come home from?

This is less predictable in Streatham than in most of Lambeth. Depending on the address and the emergency, people from Streatham are taken to King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill, St George's in Tooting, or Croydon University Hospital. Two of those are outside Lambeth, but that does not change who arranges care at home: the person's council is still Lambeth.

Live-in care fits a Streatham discharge well for a practical reason. With visiting care, the first days home depend on carers crossing south London to the same address several times a day. With live-in care, the carer is already in the house when the patient transport pulls up, and stays. Let us know the ward and the likely date as early as you can, and see our hospital discharge page.

Changeover days at three stations

Streatham has no Tube, but a carer with a suitcase has three stations to choose from. Streatham Hill and Streatham Common are on Southern routes from Victoria. Streatham station has Thameslink trains through Blackfriars and Farringdon, useful for a carer coming from north of the river.

Parking is patchier here than in Brixton. Some Streatham streets are inside a controlled parking zone and others are not, and controlled zones in Lambeth have been spreading south, so check your road. In a zone, a resident can buy Lambeth's virtual visitor vouchers for a carer arriving by car: one voucher covers one day in that zone, up to 50 per household in any 12 months.

Where a live-in carer can take a break in Streatham

A live-in carer has a daily break when they are off duty. Streatham has good places to spend it, and some of them work for the person too.

  • Streatham Library, 63 Streatham High Road, is open seven days a week except bank holidays. The side entrance on Pinfold Road has an automatic door and a ramp, so it also suits a trip out with a wheelchair.
  • Streatham Common has a café and toilets, and the Rookery's old formal gardens sit inside it.
  • The high road itself, with its shops and cafés running north to Streatham Hill.

Leigham Court Road. The Lambeth Asian Centre on Leigham Court Road is one of the day centres on Lambeth's list, open to residents after a council needs assessment. On centre days, a live-in carer can get the person ready, take them there and collect them. Ask about language and food at our assessment, and we will be honest about what we can match.

A couple staying in the family house

A side-road house with one spare bedroom is enough for a couple to have live-in care: the partners keep their own room and the carer takes the back bedroom. Where one partner needs hands-on care and the other only needs help with cooking and the house, one live-in carer can cover both, and a second spare room is not needed. We write each person's needs into the care plan separately, so the carer knows what support each partner has asked for.

Paying for it

Lambeth Council assesses needs and finances for Streatham residents, and a council personal budget can pay for live-in care through a direct payment. Where needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. Our Lambeth live-in care page has the council details. We quote in writing after the free assessment. For more on how live-in care works, see live-in care in London.

Streatham live-in care questions

Questions families ask us about Streatham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's flat on Streatham Hill has two bedrooms, but the lift is very old. Should we worry?

Not necessarily. We check how the lift is reached, whether there are steps at the entrance, and what happens when the lift is out of service. With a live-in carer, a day without the lift means staying in, not missing care.

Our road off the high road has no parking controls. Can the carer keep a car outside?

If your street is outside a controlled zone, usually yes, under the normal road rules. Check before the carer arrives, because controlled zones have been spreading south through Lambeth, and the rules change once a zone starts.

Could we try live-in care for a few weeks before deciding on a care home?

Yes. A short live-in placement, sometimes arranged as respite care, can show whether care at home works before anyone makes a permanent decision. Tell the social worker if a care home is being discussed, so they know you are trying this first.

Dad goes to the Lambeth Asian Centre twice a week. Does the carer get a break while he is there?

Often, yes. Once centre staff are looking after him, the carer can take their own time, and we write that into the weekly plan. On other days the break is covered in a different way.
