Live-in Care in Coulsdon
A carer who lives with your relative in CR5, at the far southern edge of London, so care does not depend on a long daily commute.
Yes, we provide live-in care in Coulsdon, including Old Coulsdon, the town centre and the Cane Hill development. A carer moves in, has their own room, and supports your relative through the day with a proper break. When they take leave, we arrange cover in advance and introduce the replacement first. It all starts with a free assessment at home by Jackie and a written care plan.
Getting a carer to CR5 and back again
Coulsdon is over an hour from our Lewisham office by public transport. A live-in carer only makes that trip at the start of a placement and at each changeover, and the rail links help.
- Coulsdon South, the most southerly main-line station in Greater London, is on the Brighton main line. Thameslink services through London Bridge stop there, as well as Southern trains, so a carer coming from south-east London can make the trip with one change.
- Coulsdon Town, closer to the town centre, is on the Southern line towards Tattenham Corner.
- By car, the Coulsdon Town Centre and Coulsdon Resident Only permit zones cover the middle of the town; residents there can apply to Croydon Council for visitor permits. The council's list of controlled parking zones has a map of each. Many hillside roads have no controls at all.
The outgoing carer stays until the new one has had a full handover: medicines, routines, the doctor's number and what your relative likes for breakfast. We aim for daylight changeovers, which suit a walk up the hill with luggage.
Will a live-in carer fit in a Cane Hill flat or an Old Coulsdon house?
The family houses on the slopes around the town and up to Old Coulsdon are detached and semi-detached homes with gardens. A spare bedroom is normal, so the carer's room is seldom the problem. The stairs and the drive are more often the issue, and we look at both when we visit.
The newer homes are mainly at Cane Hill, where 677 houses and flats were built on the old hospital grounds and finished in 2021, plus a scattering of flats near the town centre. Newer homes like these tend to have level floors and modern bathrooms, which can make showering, wheelchairs and hoists simpler. The catch is space: a one-bedroom flat cannot host a live-in carer, and some two-bedroom flats use the second room as a study that would need clearing. If there is no room, look at our home care in Coulsdon page for what visiting care can offer.
Moving equipment in. A hospital bed or hoist for a house above the road has to come up the steps, and a ground-floor room needs clearing first. Ask the council's occupational therapists about equipment early, and tell us what is being delivered so the carer is ready to use it from day one.
A break for the carer, and a reason to go out
Every live-in carer gets a daily break. In Coulsdon, a carer off duty for a couple of hours can walk into the town centre on Brighton Road, or spend the time at Coulsdon Library, also on Brighton Road, which has Wi-Fi and study spaces. The London Loop footpath passes through Happy Valley and Farthing Downs for a longer walk on a day off.
The same places can be your relative's outing too. If they cannot be left alone, the care plan names who covers the carer's break.
Leaving hospital for the southern edge of the borough
Coulsdon residents are treated at Croydon University Hospital, which is on the A23 in Thornton Heath. Coulsdon is further down the same A23 corridor, so the drive home is direct, but daily visits by bus are a long trip. That distance is one reason to arrange live-in care before the discharge date: once the carer has moved in, nobody needs to make that daily trip to check on your relative.
Tell the ward you are planning care at home, and ring us as soon as a date is mentioned. Jackie can assess on the ward or at home, and we tell you honestly if we cannot have a carer ready for the date proposed. See hospital discharge support for the wider process.
Can Croydon Council or the NHS pay for live-in care in Coulsdon?
Both can, depending on the person's needs and finances. Coulsdon is in the London Borough of Croydon, so the council carries out the care needs assessment, followed by a financial assessment; council funding can be taken as a direct payment and used for live-in care. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may fund the whole package. Self-funding families can come straight to us; we quote in writing after the assessment. Coulsdon live-in care questions
Questions families ask us about Coulsdon. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionOur house is a steep walk up from Coulsdon South. How will the new carer get here on changeover day?
We agree it with you in advance. A taxi from the station, a lift from family, or the outgoing carer meeting them are all options. What matters is that your relative is never left alone between carers.
Mum lives up the hill in Old Coulsdon. How will the carer manage the shopping?
Much of the weekly shop can be delivered, and the carer can put the order together with her. For anything else, the carer can go down to the shops on Brighton Road during their working day, or take Mum with them by taxi if she would enjoy the trip.
Dad drove everywhere and has now stopped. Does the carer need to drive in Coulsdon?
Not necessarily. Buses and trains connect Coulsdon with Purley and Croydon. If driving your Dad's car would make a real difference, tell us at the assessment; it depends on insurance and on the carer we match.
Can the carer help Dad with the exercises the hospital physio gave him?
Yes, a carer can prompt and support exercises that a physiotherapist has set, once they are written into the care plan. They will not invent new ones.
We live in Old Coulsdon and the family is in the north of England. Who keeps us informed?
The carer reports to our office and we keep you updated. The care plan sets out who to call, in what order, and what happens in an emergency.
