Live-in Care in Tulse Hill

A carer who lives with you on the hill above Brockwell Park, so getting home from King's and the daily routine do not depend on anyone travelling in.

Yes, we provide live-in care in Tulse Hill. A carer moves into a spare bedroom in the home and supports one person, or a couple, through the day, with a protected break of their own and a replacement carer for holidays. Because the carer lives in, the distance between Tulse Hill and our Lewisham office stops being a problem. We start with a free assessment at home and then write the care plan with you.

Which Tulse Hill homes have room for a live-in carer?

  • Cressingham Gardens. This low-rise council estate by Brockwell Park gives homes their own small gardens, with the car park at the roadside and the paths inside left to pedestrians. Homes vary in size and some have internal stairs, so we check both at the assessment.
  • The Tulse Hill Estate. The flats here range from one bedroom upwards. A two-bedroom flat works well for a live-in carer, provided the lift is reliable, because a carer cannot bring someone down several flights if it breaks.
  • The older houses on the side roads between Tulse Hill and Norwood Road. A whole Victorian or Edwardian house usually has a spare room, often upstairs. A house that has been split into flats may not.

The carer's room can be modest, even a box room with a bed and space for clothes. In a one-bedroom flat a live-in carer is not possible, so we will talk you through visiting care on our Tulse Hill home care page or a sit-in service for evenings.

Stairs, equipment and the hill itself

Inside the home, a hoist needs floor space around the bed, and a stairlift needs a suitable staircase and permission to fit it. Outside, the climb from Norwood Road up Tulse Hill is long, so with a wheelchair the carer needs to know the manageable routes before the first outing. Lambeth Adult Social Care can assess for equipment, and a live-in carer is on hand to use it every time it is needed.

Changeover day: arriving at Tulse Hill

At a changeover the incoming carer often arrives by train with a suitcase. Tulse Hill station, in fare zone 3, has two operators. Thameslink heads north through Elephant & Castle and the City to St Pancras, and south through Streatham on the Wimbledon and Sutton loop. Southern runs to London Bridge. Most homes are an uphill walk or a short bus ride from the station.

If the carer drives, parking depends on the address. In a controlled parking zone, the resident can buy virtual visitor vouchers from Lambeth for the day of the handover. On a council estate the rules are separate: Lambeth issues resident and visitor e-permits for its housing estates, valid only for the estate and bay named on them. Where we can, we plan a short overlap so the new carer is handed over properly.

King's College Hospital is one bus away. The 68 runs from Tulse Hill station through Herne Hill to King's College Hospital at Denmark Hill, the nearest A&E. After a fall or a stroke the first nights home are often the hardest, and a live-in carer can be in the house before the person arrives. Tell the ward early. See how our discharge support fits in.

Where the carer takes a break, and where they take your mum

A live-in carer needs a protected break every day, and in Tulse Hill the obvious place is on the doorstep. Brockwell Park has a walled garden, ponds and the lido, and the council says it normally opens from 7.30am until 15 minutes before sunset. The carer can walk there on their own time, or take the person round the lower paths as part of the day.

The 68 also heads the other way, to West Norwood, where West Norwood Library on Norwood High Street gives the carer somewhere quiet to sit. While the carer is off, someone else needs to be with the person if they cannot be left. That might be a family member, a planned visit or a council day centre place. With dementia, we fit the break around the person's routine.

A couple staying together on the hill

In a Cressingham Gardens home with internal stairs, or a two-bedroom flat on the Tulse Hill Estate, a couple can keep their own room while the carer uses the second. When one partner needs help washing, dressing and getting up at night, a single live-in carer can support both, so the healthier partner can go back to being a husband or wife. Each person is assessed, and the care plan says which tasks are for whom. If the stairs in a split-level home become too much for one of them, we will talk about bringing their bed down a floor.

Funding, and the free assessment

We quote after visiting, because cost depends on the support needed, and whether one or both of a couple need help. If the council is involved, Lambeth Adult Social Care carries out the needs and financial assessments; our Lambeth live-in care page covers that route and direct payments. If needs are mainly health needs, ask about NHS Continuing Healthcare. See also how live-in care works across London.

Live-in care in Tulse Hill: your questions

Questions families ask us about Tulse Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's home in Cressingham Gardens is down a footpath from the road. Can a hospital bed still be delivered?

Usually, yes, but the paths are pedestrian-only, so equipment is carried from the roadside. Mention it when the bed is ordered; we check the route and the room at our assessment.

Our carer will drive for the changeover. Where can they park on the Tulse Hill Estate?

On a Lambeth estate, parking is by estate permit, not ordinary CPZ vouchers. The resident applies to Lambeth for a visitor e-permit for the estate. A carer who arrives by Thameslink or Southern avoids the question altogether.

He's on a ward at King's now. Can the carer be there on the day he comes home?

Call us as soon as discharge is being discussed. If we can do the assessment, find a suitable carer and agree the plan in time, the carer can be in the house when he arrives. If the date is too tight, we will say so at once.

Dad uses a wheelchair. Can the carer get him down the hill to the shops on Norwood Road?

Usually, with planning. Tulse Hill is steep, so pushing a wheelchair back up is hard work; the carer may go down on foot and come back by bus, as London buses are low-floor with a wheelchair space. We look at the route from his front door at the assessment, and an occupational therapist can advise if a powered wheelchair or a power pack would help.
