Home Care in Pimlico (SW1V)

Care at home between Victoria and the river: the stucco squares, Lupus Street, Tachbrook Street and the Churchill Gardens and Lillington Gardens estates.

Yes, we provide home care in Pimlico, covering SW1V and the Pimlico side of SW1W. Pimlico is one of the quickest parts of Westminster for us to reach, with direct trains from Lewisham to Victoria, so regular visits for washing, dressing, medication and meals are realistic here, subject to carer availability for the times you need. Live-in care is available too, and both begin with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

Why Pimlico is within easy reach

Southeastern runs direct trains from Lewisham to Victoria. From there it is one stop on the Victoria line to Pimlico station, or a walk down Belgrave Road or Vauxhall Bridge Road. The 24, 360 and C10 stop on Lupus Street, and the 24 continues along Grosvenor Road past Churchill Gardens.

For family members who drive in, paid bays usually have a four-hour maximum stay and a surcharge for older diesel cars, and council estates have their own parking rules, so check the details on the council's parking zones page before you visit.

Cubitt's stucco and the stairs that come with it

Thomas Cubitt laid out most of Pimlico in the nineteenth century: long white terraces around Warwick Square, Eccleston Square and St George's Square, built as family houses and now mostly divided into flats. A top-floor flat in one of these can mean four or five flights with no lift. People manage those stairs for years, until a fall or an operation makes them impossible.

When we assess in a converted stucco house, we look at a few things in particular:

  • The shared front door. A key safe often needs the freeholder's or the other flats' agreement, so ask early.
  • The stairs. Curving period staircases rarely take a standard stairlift. The plan may need to work around one floor for a while.
  • The bathroom. Small and often up a half-landing. A strip wash, a shower seat or equipment from an occupational therapist can make personal care safe again.

Churchill Gardens and Lillington Gardens

Pimlico also has two of London's best-known post-war council estates. Churchill Gardens fills the riverside between Lupus Street and Grosvenor Road, mostly mid-rise blocks with lifts. Lillington Gardens is the red-brick estate along Vauxhall Bridge Road, close to Tachbrook Street. Lift access makes equipment deliveries simpler, but if a lift breaks down a carer needs a plan, and we write that into the care plan where it matters.

Health and council services are close by. Pimlico Health @ The Marven, a GP practice, is at 46-50 Lupus Street. The South Westminster Community Mental Health Hub and the Westminster Older People Community Mental Health Team are both at 190 Vauxhall Bridge Road. St Thomas' Hospital, just over the river in Lambeth, is the nearest A&E and is where many Pimlico patients are discharged from.

How much does home care cost in Pimlico?

There is no single price, and we don't publish one. We give you a written quote after the free assessment, once we know what visits or live-in support are needed. If you want the council to help pay, Westminster first carries out a needs assessment, then a financial assessment based on income and savings. You can request it on the council's referral form or by phoning Adult Social Care on 020 7641 2500. If the council agrees to fund care, People First explains how personal budgets and direct payments work, including using a direct payment to choose your own agency. Someone with a primarily health need may be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which the hospital or GP can start. Our Westminster home care page covers the borough route in more detail.

Live-in care and short breaks

Spare bedrooms are scarce in Pimlico flats, and a live-in carer needs one. Where there is a second bedroom, live-in care gives round-the-clock support without the travel question. Where there isn't, a package of daily visits is usually the practical answer. For a family carer who needs time off, respite care can cover a short break with visits or a live-in stay. Westminster offers carers' assessments, and the charity Carers Network (020 8960 3033) supports unpaid carers in the borough.

Pimlico FAQs

Pimlico questions

Questions families ask us about Pimlico. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
My mother is coming home from St Thomas'. Can you be ready for her?

Call us while she is still on the ward. Pimlico is close to our Lewisham office by train, which helps us fit the home assessment around her discharge date. Whether the first visits can start that day depends on which carers are available, and we will tell you honestly.

Dad lives on the fourth floor of a stucco house with no lift. What are the options?

We start by seeing what he can still do safely on the stairs. Care visits can bring everything he needs to his flat, an occupational therapist from Westminster can advise on equipment, and if the stairs have become unsafe we can talk honestly about the longer-term choices.

Do you cover Churchill Gardens and Lillington Gardens?

Yes, along with the squares, Lupus Street, Warwick Way and the streets towards Victoria. We work with tenants and leaseholders alike.

Pimlico or Belgravia: which council handles SW1W?

Pimlico and most of Belgravia are in Westminster, but SW1W reaches towards Sloane Square, where some addresses are in Kensington and Chelsea. The two councils share an adult social care service, though the referral still goes to the council the address is in.

Can a carer take my aunt to the market on Tachbrook Street?

Yes, if it is in her care plan. A supported trip to the market or the shops on Warwick Way is often the best part of a companionship visit.
