Supported Living for Wandsworth Residents
An adult from Wandsworth can move into one of our supported living homes, permanently or for a respite stay, but none of the homes is in Wandsworth. They are in Kingston upon Thames, Whitton and Uxbridge. Kingston and Whitton are both a direct South Western Railway journey from the borough, and a council-funded move is agreed through the person's Wandsworth social worker.
Which of our homes is closest to Wandsworth?
Wandsworth sits on the main South Western Railway lines out of Waterloo, which works in favour of families visiting our two south-west London homes.
- Kingston upon Thames is the nearest. Trains from Clapham Junction and Earlsfield run to Kingston via Wimbledon in about half an hour. From Putney or Roehampton it is roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car along the A3, or 35 to 45 minutes on the 85 bus.
- Whitton, near Twickenham, is a close second. Hounslow loop trains from Clapham Junction, Wandsworth Town and Putney stop there without a change.
- Uxbridge is a long way from any part of Wandsworth. It only makes sense if family live in west London.
How does Wandsworth Council arrange supported living?
Everything starts with a Care Act needs assessment from Wandsworth Adult Social Care. Ask the Access Team on 020 8871 7707 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm), or use the council's online referral form, which takes self-referrals and referrals from professionals. Adult social care is run jointly with Richmond upon Thames, so letters and emails may carry both councils' names.
Adults with a learning disability or autism: the ROSE Framework
Wandsworth buys most accommodation-based support for these adults through its ROSE Framework, which runs until 2027. It has four lots: residential care, outreach support, supported living, and emergency placements. The council describes supported living as anything from a few hours a week to 24/7 support in the person's own flat or a shared house.
We are not on that framework, and none of our homes is in the borough. The framework is the council's main route for supported living, so a placement with us would need the social worker to agree an arrangement outside it, or the person to use a direct payment. Ask about both early, and mention our homes by name.
Young people coming through from children's services
Wandsworth's transition journey starts at 14, in Year 9. Young people likely to need adult support go on a tracking list. Children's services usually refer them to Adult Social Care at 16 (Year 11), or earlier when needs are complex. If a home of their own is the aim, put it in the Preparing for Adulthood section of the EHC plan early.
Adults with mental health needs
Support goes through the Community Mental Health Teams run with South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, whose inpatient wards are at Springfield Hospital in Tooting. Supported living after a stay at Springfield is planned with the care co-ordinator and the ward team, so raise it with them before discharge.
Housing support is not the same as care. Wandsworth also funds housing-related support in hostels, sheltered housing and shared homes, but the council says it does not cover personal care such as dressing, bathing or feeding. If someone needs that help, it has to come from a care assessment and a registered provider.
Who pays for supported living for someone from Wandsworth?
Rent and support are paid separately. The person pays rent to the landlord, often helped by housing benefit. Wandsworth funds the support once eligible needs are confirmed, and a financial assessment decides whether the person contributes. Where needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay instead.
If the family wants to arrange support with a direct payment, Ruils is the council's direct payments support service (020 3084 2119). It can advise, manage the payment and help with employing a personal assistant.
A move out of the borough does not normally end Wandsworth's responsibility. Under the Care Act's ordinary residence rules, the council that arranges the placement usually keeps funding and reviewing it, as chapter 19 of the Care and Support Statutory Guidance explains. Get this confirmed in writing. We don't publish prices: we quote after meeting the person. Our paying for care guide sets out the funding routes.
Your tenancy and your support are separate
A supported living resident is a tenant, with a tenancy agreement and housing rights. The support comes under a separate care plan from a provider registered with the CQC for personal care. In principle the support can change hands without the person losing their home, which is the main difference from a care home. Read the tenancy before anyone signs. JNP Sidona is registered with the CQC but has not yet been inspected, so we have no rating to show you.
Questions worth asking any provider
- Who lives there now, and can we visit and meet them first?
- How is support covered overnight and at weekends?
- Will staff help with trips back to Wandsworth for family, a place of worship, a day service or work support such as Choice Support?
- Which GP will the person register with, and how will clinic appointments at St George's or Queen Mary's, Roehampton, be handled?
- Can we begin with a short respite stay?
Family carers are entitled to their own carer's assessment from the council, and Wandsworth Carers' Centre (020 8877 1200) supports carers whether or not they have had one.

Wandsworth FAQs
Wandsworth families ask
Questions families ask us about Wandsworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionIf our home isn't on the ROSE Framework, can Wandsworth still fund a place there?
Possibly, but it is not the usual route. The council buys most supported living for adults with a learning disability or autism through the framework. Ask the social worker whether an arrangement outside it, or a direct payment for the support, would be possible for one of our homes.
We live on the Alton Estate in Roehampton. How would we visit Kingston without a car?
The 85 bus runs from Roehampton Lane to Kingston. Allow around 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and walk the route once before the move so you know it works.
My son is in Year 10 and on the transitions tracker. What should we do now?
Tell his EHC plan review and the tracking team that he wants supported living, so it is recorded before the referral to Adult Social Care, which usually happens in Year 11. You can arrange a visit to one of our homes at any stage.
My sister is in Springfield Hospital. Could she move straight into supported living?
Sometimes, if her care co-ordinator, the ward team and the council agree it meets her needs. Ask for it to be discussed in discharge planning, and call us so we can say whether we have a room and whether our support suits her.
Would Wandsworth still review her care after a move to Whitton?
Usually yes. Under ordinary residence rules, the council that arranges an out-of-borough placement normally stays responsible for funding and reviews. Ask the social worker to confirm it in writing.
