Home Care in Battersea (SW11)
Visiting care and live-in care for Battersea, from the estates around York Road and Winstanley to Shaftesbury Park, Lavender Hill, Northcote Road and the mansion flats on Prince of Wales Drive.
Yes, we provide home care in Battersea. Of all the Wandsworth neighbourhoods, it is the easiest for us to reach from our Lewisham office, so visiting care is a realistic option here, subject to having a carer free at the times you need. Live-in care is available anywhere in SW11. We start with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.
Can I get home care in Battersea through Wandsworth Council?
Yes, if the council assesses you as eligible. The route is the same for every Battersea address:
- Contact the Adult Social Care Access Team on 020 8871 7707 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm), or use the council's online referral form. You can refer yourself, or a family member can do it with your agreement.
- A care needs assessment follows. If you have eligible needs, a care and support plan is agreed and a financial assessment works out what you pay.
- The council can arrange the care, or you can take the money as a direct payment and choose an agency yourself. Ruils is the council's direct payments support service, on 020 3084 2119.
Out of hours, the council's emergency number is 020 8871 8999. If you are paying for care yourself, you can come straight to us. The rest of the borough is covered on our home care in Wandsworth page.
Three kinds of Battersea home
Estate flats. The Winstanley, York Road and Doddington estates include tower blocks where the lift decides how easy care is. When it works, a wheelchair, a commode or a hoist can get in and out without trouble. When it breaks down, someone on an upper floor can be stuck, so we ask about the lift at the assessment and build it into the plan. Visitor parking permits do not work on housing estates, so carers who drive need to check the estate's own rules.
Terraces and conversions. The streets between Lavender Hill and Northcote Road, and the Shaftesbury Park estate of small artisans' cottages, are mostly Victorian. Many houses are now split into flats with steep stairs and narrow bathrooms. Hoists and bathing need careful planning in these, and sometimes the answer is to bring the bed downstairs.
Mansion blocks and new riverside flats. The mansion flats on Prince of Wales Drive face Battersea Park, and newer towers line the river towards the Power Station. Both usually have lifts. The older blocks can have long corridors and few spare rooms, which matters for live-in care.
Age UK Wandsworth is close by. Its office is on Old York Road, beside Wandsworth Town station, on 020 8877 8940. It gives information and advice and runs the Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre on East Hill, which takes people with dementia after an Adult Social Care assessment. A carer can help someone get ready on day-centre mornings.
Why Battersea is the closest part of Wandsworth for us
From Lewisham, Battersea takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes by public transport, changing at Victoria or London Bridge. Clapham Junction has Overground, South Western Railway and Southern trains. Battersea Park is on Southern, Queenstown Road is on South Western Railway, and the Northern line now reaches Battersea Power Station.
Local buses help carers move between clients and get people to appointments:
- The G1 starts on the Shaftesbury Estate and runs up Lavender Hill to Clapham Junction, then on past Springfield University Hospital to St George's Hospital in Tooting.
- The 44 runs from Battersea Park station along Battersea Park Road, past the Latchmere and York Gardens, to Wandsworth and Tooting.
- The 319 links Prince of Wales Drive, the Latchmere and Battersea High Street with Clapham Junction.
The Battersea, Battersea Park and Clapham Junction parking zones cover most streets, and part of Battersea High Street is pedestrianised. For a resident with a permit, ten free one-hour visitor permits a year are available on request for zones with one hour of control.
When live-in care makes more sense
Visits work well for help getting up, washing, meals and medication. When someone needs help through the night, or a husband or wife can no longer manage alone between visits, a live-in carer may suit better, provided there is a spare bedroom. Booked for a week or two, live-in care also gives a family carer a proper break.

Battersea FAQs
Questions families ask us about Battersea. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDad lives high up in a Winstanley Estate block. What if the lift is out?
We plan for it. That might mean keeping essentials, medication and food where he can reach them without going out, and agreeing what the carer does if they cannot get up. Report lift faults to the council's housing team as soon as they happen.
Can a carer take Mum to St George's for outpatient appointments?
Yes, if it is in her care plan. The G1 runs from the Shaftesbury Estate and Clapham Junction to St George's Hospital, so a carer can go with her on one bus.
We pay for care with a Wandsworth direct payment. Can we use you?
Yes. A direct payment lets you choose your provider. Ruils can help you manage the payment and keep the records the council asks for. Tell us at the assessment that the care is funded by a direct payment.
Mum lives on the pedestrianised part of Battersea High Street. Can a carer drive to her door?
Usually not. The stretch from Simpson Street down to Battersea Park Road is a pedestrian zone watched by a camera, and only vehicles on the council's exemption list may enter. Carers coming from Lewisham would normally arrive by train at Clapham Junction anyway, and the 44 and 319 both stop on Battersea High Street.
