Nine Elms Home Care: SW8 and SW11

Visiting care and live-in care in the riverside towers between Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station, and on the older estates off Wandsworth Road.

Yes, we provide home care in Nine Elms, both visits and live-in care. Nine Elms is one of the easier parts of Wandsworth for us to reach from Lewisham, but regular visits still depend on carer availability, so we confirm the times before we agree them. Care starts with a free assessment at home.

First, which council: Wandsworth or Lambeth?

"Nine Elms" is used for the whole regenerated stretch of riverside from Vauxhall to Battersea Power Station, and the borough boundary runs through it. The US Embassy, New Covent Garden Market, Embassy Gardens and the power station itself are in Wandsworth. Vauxhall, and Nine Elms tube station on Wandsworth Road, are on the Lambeth side. Adult social care comes from the council you pay council tax to, so check that before you ring anyone. For Lambeth addresses, see our home care in Lambeth page; the rest of this page is about the Wandsworth side.

Care in a new tower

Most homes here are new apartments in high-rise blocks, many with lifts and a concierge. For care, that is mostly good news. There are no internal stairs, so a wheelchair, walking frame or mobile hoist can move from room to room; corridors and bathrooms in newer blocks are usually wider than in a Victorian conversion; and there is someone on the desk who knows who comes and goes.

It does mean some practical arrangements that families do not always think of:

  • Getting in. Carers need a reliable way through the front door: a fob, a key safe agreed with the building management, or a standing arrangement with the concierge. We sort this out at the assessment.
  • Lift outages and fire drills. We note the building's procedures and who to call, and the evacuation plan for someone who cannot use the stairs.
  • Small second bedrooms. A one-bedroom apartment cannot take a live-in carer; a two-bedroom one usually can, if the second room is free.

The older council estates in Nine Elms, such as Carey Gardens and the Savona Estate, are a different picture: older blocks and older lifts, and some residents who have lived there for decades and watched the towers go up around them. Care there looks more like care anywhere else in Battersea, with the same attention to access and stairs.

How do carers get to Nine Elms?

By Tube, mostly. The Northern line extension, which opened on 20 September 2021, added two stations: Nine Elms on Wandsworth Road and Battersea Power Station on Battersea Park Road. Vauxhall, with the Victoria line and South Western Railway, is just over the Lambeth boundary, and Queenstown Road and Battersea Park stations are close to the power station end. From our Lewisham office the journey is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. Many of the new developments are permit-free, meaning residents cannot get on-street parking permits, so we plan for carers to arrive on foot or by public transport.

A new health centre for the area. The Sleaford Street Health Centre, SW8, opened in May 2026, and Battersea Fields Practice runs GP services from it, according to NHS Property Services. A carer can go with someone to appointments there or collect prescriptions as part of medication support.

How much does home care cost in Nine Elms?

We cannot give a figure before we have met the person, because the cost depends on how many visits are needed, how long they last, or whether live-in care is the better fit. After the free assessment we give you a written quote. If you think the council should help, ask Wandsworth's Adult Social Care Access Team for a needs assessment on 020 8871 7707 or through the online referral form; a financial assessment then decides how much the person pays. People whose needs are primarily health needs should ask their GP or hospital team about NHS Continuing Healthcare, which is not means-tested. Our paying for care guide and our Wandsworth home care page go through the steps.

Coming home from hospital

St George's in Tooting is Wandsworth's acute hospital, but depending on where an ambulance takes them, a Nine Elms resident may be treated just across the river at St Thomas' in Lambeth instead. Either way, the council that assesses for care after discharge is Wandsworth if that is where they live. Tell the ward early if you want us involved, so we can say honestly whether we can have care in place for the first night home. See hospital discharge care.

A live-in carer in a two-bedroom apartment

In a two-bedroom apartment, a live-in carer can provide round-the-clock support without the stairs and narrow halls that complicate live-in care in older houses. Booked for a short period, it also gives a family carer a break; Wandsworth Council's carer's assessment and Wandsworth Carers' Centre are the other places to ask about respite care.

Nine Elms FAQs

Questions families ask us about Nine Elms. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our building has a concierge and fob entry. How will carers get in?

We agree a method with you and, where needed, the building management before the first visit: a fob held securely, a key safe if the building allows one, or a named list at the concierge desk.

Is a hoist practical in a new-build apartment?

Usually more practical than in an older house, because there are no internal stairs and doorways tend to be wider. The occupational therapist decides on the equipment; we make sure carers are trained to use it.

My parents moved into a Nine Elms flat to be near us. They know nobody locally. Can you help with that?

Yes. Companionship visits can include getting out together, whether along the river path or to the shops at the power station, and finding local groups. Age UK Wandsworth is a good place to start.

We are in a permit-free development. Can a carer park outside?

Usually not, which is why we plan Nine Elms visits around the Tube and buses. If a carer has to drive, for example for a late call, we talk to the building about visitor parking.
