Care and Support Worker Jobs for Hackney Residents

Yes, you can work for us from Hackney. Live-in carer roles are open to anyone in London. Support worker roles are at our homes in Whitton, Kingston and Uxbridge, and the Overground Mildmay line gives you a direct train towards Whitton. Visiting care work is mostly in south-east London, which is realistic from the south of the borough along the Windrush line but hard from Stamford Hill or Clapton.

Is visiting care work realistic from Hackney?

It depends on which end of the borough you live in. Our only office is in Lewisham, at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, and our visiting work depends on where our clients are, which is mainly south-east London. We have no Hackney office and can't promise visiting work in Hackney itself.

The Windrush line makes the south of the borough workable. Trains from Dalston Junction, Haggerston and Hoxton run south through Shoreditch High Street and across the river to New Cross, Brockley, Honor Oak Park and Forest Hill without a change. From Hoxton or Haggerston, getting to our office takes about 40 to 50 minutes. From Stoke Newington, Stamford Hill or Upper Clapton, allow nearer an hour each way, usually via Liverpool Street.

Driving won't make it much easier. Most of Hackney is in controlled parking zones, many streets are in low-traffic neighbourhoods, and the whole borough is inside the ULEZ. Tell us how you get around and we'll say plainly whether a visiting round can work.

Live-in carer: your postcode doesn't matter

A live-in carer moves into the client's home, has their own bedroom, and helps them through the day with personal care, meals, medication and housework, as well as keeping them company. Because you live where the work is, someone from Homerton can take a placement in Bromley as easily as one in Islington. You're entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover for them. Our live-in care page describes it from the family's side.

Support worker at our supported living homes

Our three homes are in Whitton (Twickenham), Kingston upon Thames and Uxbridge, on the opposite side of London from Hackney. Be honest with yourself about the commute before you apply, because a support worker shift starts at a fixed time whatever the trains are doing.

  • If you live near the Mildmay line (Hackney Wick, Homerton, Hackney Central or Dalston Kingsland), Whitton is the realistic one: a single train to Richmond, then one change. Allow 75 to 90 minutes each way.
  • Kingston adds a bus from Richmond on top of that, so think of it as around 90 minutes.
  • Uxbridge means crossing central London via King's Cross and the Metropolitan line, 80 to 100 minutes, which is hard to sustain from Stoke Newington or Clapton.

Check the journey at the hours you would actually travel. The work means helping adults run their own lives: cooking, budgeting, appointments and building confidence. See our supported living page.

What the work involves

  • Help with washing, dressing and the toilet, with dignity and privacy
  • Prompting medication and recording it accurately
  • Preparing meals the person actually wants to eat
  • Safe moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Conversation, outings and company
  • Clear notes, so the next carer knows how the day went

Some of the people we support live with dementia, a physical disability or sight or hearing loss. Some are nearing the end of their lives.

New to care? Training and the Care Certificate

We look for experience, but we also want to hear from you if you have cared for a relative, volunteered, or done work that needed patience and reliability. People new to care train to the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care. The Health and Care Act 2022 requires registered providers to train their staff in learning disability and autism, which matters most at our supported living homes.

The checks we must carry out by law

  1. An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Proof of your right to work in the UK, which we have to see before you start, under the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to keep to that limit.
  3. References, including one from your most recent employer and one from any previous care employer.

How much do care jobs pay for someone living in Hackney?

We don't publish pay here, because it depends on the role. Ask when you get in touch and we'll give you a straight answer.

Hackney FAQs

Questions from Hackney applicants

Questions families ask us about Hackney. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I live near Dalston Junction. Is that a good place to commute from for visiting work?

It's one of the better places in Hackney to start from, because Windrush line trains run straight to stations in south-east London such as New Cross and Brockley. Whether there's a visiting round for you still depends on where our clients are at the time, so ask us.

Which of your homes is easiest to reach from Hackney Wick or Homerton?

Whitton. Both stations are on the Mildmay line, so you can stay on one train all the way to Richmond and change there for the short hop to Whitton.

Can I cycle between visits?

It can work where clients on a round are close together. Whether it suits a particular round depends on the distances, so tell us when you apply and we'll be realistic about it.

Where would my interview be?

Usually we start with a phone call. If we meet in person, it's at our Lewisham office. From Hackney, take the Windrush line south to Shadwell and the DLR to Lewisham, or go via Liverpool Street or London Bridge.

Would I ever look after someone in Hackney?

It can happen. A live-in placement can be anywhere in London, Hackney included. We have no base in the borough, though, so we can't promise local work.
