Carer and Support Worker Jobs for Islington Residents
You can apply from Islington for live-in care work anywhere in London, or for support work at our homes in Uxbridge, Whitton and Kingston. Visiting care work is possible from the south of the borough, because Angel and Farringdon are quick to reach from our Lewisham office; from Archway it's a long daily trip. Here is how each role works from an Islington address.
Visiting care: which end of Islington you live in matters
Our only office is at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13, and visiting work follows where our clients are, which is mostly south-east London. We have no Islington base.
For Islington residents, the commute depends a lot on the postcode:
- Clerkenwell and Finsbury (EC1). Thameslink from Farringdon reaches London Bridge in about ten minutes, with trains on to Lewisham from there. This is the closest part of Islington to us.
- Angel and Barnsbury (N1). The Northern line's Bank branch from Angel runs to London Bridge, so Lewisham is roughly 30 to 35 minutes away.
- Highbury and Canonbury (N5, N1). The Overground Windrush line runs south from Highbury & Islington and Canonbury to Shadwell, where the DLR continues to Lewisham. Allow 35 to 45 minutes.
- Holloway, Archway, Upper Holloway and Finsbury Park (N7, N19, N4). Allow 45 to 55 minutes each way before your first visit. Say so when you apply, and we'll be straight about whether it works.
Do I need a car to be a carer if I live in Islington?
No, and from Islington a car can cost you more than it saves. The council runs about two dozen controlled parking zones, some with extra restrictions on Arsenal match days around the Emirates Stadium. Clerkenwell and Finsbury are inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the whole borough is in the ULEZ. Most carers coming from Islington travel by Tube, Overground, bus or bike.
Live-in work: your Islington address doesn't limit you
A live-in carer moves into the client's home, has their own bedroom, and supports them through the day: personal care, medication, meals, housework and company. Because you live where the client lives, it doesn't matter that you're in N7 and the client is in Bromley or Barnet. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover for them.
Support work at our supported living homes
Our supported living homes help adults live their own lives: cooking, budgeting, getting out, keeping appointments and building confidence. All three are in west and south-west London, so the question for an Islington applicant is which home your nearest station serves best, and whether you could make that trip for an early start or get home after a late finish.
If you live near Farringdon, King's Cross or Angel, the Uxbridge home is the realistic one: Uxbridge-bound Metropolitan line trains run straight through. If you are nearer Highbury Corner or the Cally, the Mildmay line takes you to Richmond for the Whitton home without changing. Kingston is the awkward one from anywhere in Islington, with a change at Waterloo. Tell us your nearest station when you apply and we will talk through the journey honestly; the route details for families are on our supported living page for Islington.
More about the homes is on our supported living page.
What the job involves
The work is personal and practical. Washing, dressing and continence care done with dignity; prompting and recording medication; moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist; cooking; conversation; and clear written notes so the next person knows how the day went. The people we support include those living with dementia, physical disabilities and sensory impairments, and some are nearing the end of life.
Checks and training before you start
As a CQC-registered provider we must carry out pre-employment checks before anyone works with clients:
- An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Proof of your right to work in the UK, following the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to keep within that limit.
- References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.
If you're new to care, you'll work through the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care, which cover safeguarding, privacy and dignity, infection control, communication and person-centred care. Support workers in supported living also receive the learning disability and autism training that registered providers are required to give their staff.
How much do care workers get paid in Islington?
We don't publish pay rates on this page, because they depend on the role. Ask us when you get in touch and we'll tell you plainly.
Want work close to home instead? Islington Council funds some residents through direct payments, which they can use to employ their own personal assistant, and the council runs an online PA finder directory for this. Working as a PA means being employed by the person you support, not by an agency like us, so the arrangements are different.

Questions from Islington applicants
Questions families ask us about Islington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionDo you have visiting clients in Islington itself?
It depends on who we are supporting at the time, so we can't promise visiting work inside the borough. Live-in placements can be anywhere in London, Islington included. Ask us what is current when you apply.
I live in Archway. Which supported living home is easiest to reach?
Probably Uxbridge. Take the Northern line from Archway to King's Cross St Pancras, then an Uxbridge-bound Metropolitan line train straight through. It's still a long journey, so be sure you'd be happy doing it regularly.
Where would the interview be?
We usually start with a phone call. If we meet in person it's at our office near Lewisham station, which is about half an hour from Angel or Farringdon via London Bridge.
I'm studying at City or London Met. Could care work fit around my course?
Possibly, depending on your hours and any visa conditions. Live-in work rarely fits around lectures. Tell us your timetable and we'll say honestly whether anything suits.
I've cared for my mum at home in Islington but never had a care job. Is that worth mentioning?
Yes. Caring for a relative teaches a lot of what the job needs. Tell us about it in your application; the formal training comes through the Care Certificate.
