Care Jobs for Tower Hamlets Residents
Yes, you can work for us from Tower Hamlets. The DLR runs straight from the Isle of Dogs, Poplar and Limehouse to Lewisham, so visiting care work in south-east London is realistic from much of the borough. Live-in roles are open to anyone in London, and support worker roles are at our homes in Whitton, Kingston and Uxbridge, a long commute west.
Can I do visiting care work if I live in Tower Hamlets?
Often, yes. Our only office is in Lewisham, at Tower House on Lewisham High Street, and our visiting work is centred on south-east London. From Tower Hamlets, how easy that is depends on where you start:
- Isle of Dogs: Crossharbour, Mudchute and Island Gardens are about 10 to 15 minutes from Lewisham on the DLR, under the river.
- Poplar and Limehouse: about 20 to 25 minutes on the same line.
- Bow: about 30 minutes from Bow Church on the DLR, though some journeys need a change.
- Whitechapel, Stepney and Wapping: roughly 30 to 35 minutes via Shadwell and the DLR.
- Bethnal Green: allow 35 to 45 minutes.
We also cover Tower Hamlets itself, so some work may be near home. We have no base in the borough, though, and visits depend on where our clients are at the time, so we can't promise local rounds. If you'd drive to a client in the borough, bear in mind that on-street parking is controlled and a visitor needs visitor vouchers from the resident, and the whole borough is inside the ULEZ. The DLR, Tube and buses are usually simpler.
What the work actually involves
A visiting carer helps people stay at home: washing and dressing, help with the toilet, prompting medication and writing it up, cooking a meal the person likes, safe moving and handling, and company. The people we support include adults with dementia, physical disabilities, or sight or hearing loss, and some people at the end of their lives. You keep clear notes so the next carer knows what happened.
Families can ask for a carer who shares their language or faith, or for a female carer for personal care, so tell us the languages you speak. It helps us match people, though we can't build a role around it.
Live-in work: your postcode doesn't matter
A live-in carer moves into the client's home for the placement, with their own bedroom, and supports them through the day. Because you live where the work is, a placement in Bromley or Barnet is as open to someone from Stepney as to anyone else. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and we arrange cover. Our live-in care page explains how it works for families.
Support worker roles in west London
Our three supported living homes, in Whitton, Kingston upon Thames and Uxbridge, are at the far side of London from the East End. Each is roughly 75 to 95 minutes each way by public transport. If you live near a District line station (Whitechapel, Stepney Green, Mile End or Bow Road), Whitton is the least awkward, because the Richmond trains run through without a change. Try the journey at the hour you would actually travel before you apply for a role there. The work there is helping adults run their own lives: cooking, budgeting, appointments and building confidence. See our supported living page.
Checks and training before your first shift
As a CQC-registered provider we must check three things before you start:
- An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Your right to work in the UK, under the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits your hours, for example as a student at Queen Mary on Mile End Road, we have to stay within that limit.
- References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.
If you are new to care, you'll be trained to the Care Certificate standards set by Skills for Care. Experience of looking after a relative counts for a lot, so tell us about it.
How much do care jobs pay in Tower Hamlets?
We don't publish pay here, because it depends on the role. Ask us when you get in touch and we'll give you a straight answer.

Tower Hamlets applicants ask
Questions families ask us about Tower Hamlets. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI live on the Isle of Dogs. Is that close enough for visiting work?
It's about as close as anywhere north of the river gets. The DLR from Mudchute or Island Gardens reaches Lewisham in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Whether there's a round for you depends on where our clients are when you apply.
I'm in Bethnal Green. Should I stick to live-in work?
Not necessarily. It takes a little longer, around 35 to 45 minutes, but visiting work in south-east London is still realistic. Tell us your nearest station and we'll be honest about it.
I've looked after my mum at home in Stepney. Does that count?
Yes, tell us about it. Personal care, medication and patience with someone you love are the same skills we need. We train new carers to the Care Certificate standards.
Where would my interview be?
We usually start with a phone call. If we meet in person, it's at our Lewisham office on Lewisham High Street, a short walk from Lewisham DLR station, the end of the line from Canary Wharf and Poplar.
