Care Jobs for Barnet Residents
Living in Barnet, you can apply to us for live-in carer work anywhere in London, or for support worker roles at our supported living home in Uxbridge, which is the easiest of our three homes to reach from the borough. Day-to-day visiting care work is a long commute from Barnet, because our office and most visiting work are in south-east London.
Live-in care: the role that suits Barnet best
A live-in carer moves into the client's home for a stretch of time, with their own bedroom, and provides personal care, meals, medication support, housework and company through the day. Because you live where the work is, it makes no difference that you start from Edgware or Whetstone and our office is in Lewisham. You are entitled to proper breaks and time off, and cover is arranged for them. Our live-in care page shows the role from the family's side.
Barnet has the largest Jewish community of any local authority in Britain. If you know how to run a kosher kitchen or work around Shabbat and festivals, put it in your application: it is practical knowledge some families in north London look for in a live-in carer.
Commuting from Barnet to our supported living homes
Our homes are in Uxbridge, Whitton and Kingston upon Thames, where support workers help adults cook, budget, get out and build confidence (see the supported living page).
- Uxbridge is the realistic one. With a car, Edgware or Mill Hill to Uxbridge is roughly 35 to 45 minutes via the A41 and A40 or the A410. Without one, allow 60 to 75 minutes: a bus to Harrow, then the Metropolitan line.
- Whitton and Kingston mean crossing London: the Northern line into town, then a South Western Railway train from Waterloo. Expect well over an hour each way, which is hard to sustain for regular shifts.
The whole of Barnet is inside the ULEZ, so if you drive an older car, check it on TfL's ULEZ page before planning a daily drive.
Is visiting care work possible from Barnet?
For some people. Visiting carers go from one client's home to the next through the day, and our visiting work is mostly in south-east London. The south of Barnet has the best links: the Northern line's Bank branch runs from Golders Green, Hendon Central, Finchley Central and East Finchley to London Bridge, and Thameslink from Hendon or Mill Hill Broadway heads that way too, with Southeastern trains on to Lewisham. Even so, the journey from Golders Green or Hendon to Lewisham takes roughly 50 to 60 minutes, and from Edgware, Mill Hill or High Barnet nearer 65 to 80. If you want visiting work, tell us where you could get to, and we'll say honestly whether there is anything that fits.
No office in Barnet. We have one office, at Tower House, 67-71 Lewisham High Street, SE13. If we meet you in person, it will be there.
What a working day involves
- Helping with washing, dressing and the toilet, with dignity
- Prompting medication and recording it accurately
- Safe moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist or stairlift
- Shopping, cooking and keeping the home in order
- Conversation, walks and outings
- Spotting changes and reporting them
The people we support may be living with dementia, a physical disability or a sensory impairment, and some are approaching the end of life. In supported living, the focus is on helping adults do things for themselves.
Checks, training and the Care Certificate
The law requires us, as a CQC-registered provider, to complete these checks before you start:
- An enhanced DBS check including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Proof of your right to work in the UK, checked under the government's right to work rules, including any limits on your hours.
- References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.
If you are new to care, you will work through the Care Certificate standards from Skills for Care, covering safeguarding, dignity, infection control, communication and more. Support workers in supported living also receive learning disability and autism training, which registered providers are legally required to give.
How much do care jobs in Barnet pay?
We don't list pay here, because it depends on the role. Ask when you get in touch and we'll give you a straight answer.

Questions from Barnet applicants
Questions families ask us about Barnet. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI live in Colindale and don't drive. Which role is realistic?
Live-in work, since you travel to a placement and stay there. A daily commute to Uxbridge without a car means changing at Harrow, and visiting work in south-east London would mean the Northern line to London Bridge and a train on to Lewisham every morning.
Could a live-in placement be close to home in Barnet?
It could, but we can't promise it. Live-in placements go where clients need them, anywhere in London. Tell us if you would prefer north London and we'll take it into account.
I've cared for my mother in Finchley for years. Does that count as experience?
It is worth telling us about. Caring for a relative teaches a lot of what the job needs. You would still complete the Care Certificate and the formal training before working alone.
Do I have to come to Lewisham for an interview?
The first conversation can be by phone. If we meet in person, it is at our Lewisham office. From most of Barnet the quickest route is the Northern line or Thameslink to London Bridge, then a train to Lewisham.
