Carer and Support Worker Jobs in Kingston upon Thames
If you live in Kingston, the most realistic job with us is support work at our supported living home in the borough itself. Live-in carer roles are open to you as well, as they are to anyone in London. Visiting care is the hard one: our only office is in Lewisham, well over an hour away by train.
Support worker roles at our Kingston home
One of our three supported living homes is in Kingston upon Thames, in a quiet residential area within reach of the town centre, the river and Kingston Hospital. Support workers there help adults live in their own home and run their own lives: planning the week's meals, budgeting for the shop on Clarence Street, getting to a hospital appointment on Galsworthy Road, or catching a bus into town alone for the first time. The job is to build independence, so a good shift often means stepping back and letting someone do it themselves.
Getting there is a short bus, train or car journey from most of the borough. The borough has no Tube; it runs on South Western Railway and buses:
- Kingston town centre, Norbiton, Surbiton and Berrylands: the closest parts of the borough, and well served by buses.
- New Malden, Old Malden and Coombe: by train via Norbiton or New Malden, or by bus over Kingston Hill and along the Kingston Road.
- Tolworth, Hook and Chessington: the Chessington branch line and buses along the A3 corridor. Hook has no station, so early and late shifts are easier if you drive.
Our Whitton home, in Twickenham, is across Kingston Bridge, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car or by bus and rail via Twickenham. Uxbridge is about an hour away. You can read about the house on our Kingston home page.
What does a care job involve day to day?
- Personal care: washing, dressing, continence
- Medication support, recorded every time
- Helping with cooking, cleaning and money
- Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
- Days out, clubs, appointments and errands
- Clear written notes for colleagues and families
In live-in work you may support someone with dementia, a physical disability or sensory loss, or someone nearing the end of life.
Live-in carer work, in Kingston or anywhere in London
A live-in carer moves into the client's home with a bedroom of their own and supports one person, or a couple, through the day, with breaks and time off built in. Where you live doesn't matter, because you live where the work is.
If a placement is in Kingston, the house shapes the job. The interwar semis of Tolworth, Berrylands, the Maldens and Chessington usually have a spare room and space for a stairlift or a bed moved downstairs. Converted Victorian flats in Surbiton and around the town centre are harder, with shared stairs, no lift and small bathrooms. The family's side of this is on our live-in care page.
New Malden has a large Korean community. If you speak Korean, tell us when you apply, because language can matter when we match a carer with a client.
Visiting care: the honest picture from Kingston
Our office is on Lewisham High Street, SE13, and visiting rounds are organised from there. From Surbiton, the fast train to Waterloo and on to Lewisham takes roughly 65 to 80 minutes door to door, and longer from Chessington or Hook.
Visiting work inside Kingston depends on whether we have clients here at the time, so we can't promise it. If you drive, it helps to know that the town centre and the streets around the stations are controlled parking zones, though most suburban streets in Tolworth, Chessington and the Maldens are not, and the council sells service-provider permits to care agencies. Ask us what is near you.
No pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns appear on this page. They depend on the role and on what is open when you apply. Ask us and we will tell you straight.
Can I become a carer in Kingston with no experience?
Yes. You don't need a care qualification to apply. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards covering safeguarding, dignity, infection control, communication and person-centred care. Staff of CQC-registered providers must also be trained in learning disability and autism, as set out in the Oliver McGowan training programme, which matters for supported living work. Time spent caring for a relative or volunteering counts, so mention it.
Checks the law requires before you start
- Enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa caps your hours, we must keep to the cap.
- References, including your most recent employer and any earlier care employer.

Questions from Kingston applicants
Questions families ask us about Kingston upon Thames. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI study at Kingston University. Could I do shifts at the Kingston home?
Possibly. Send us your timetable and we'll see what fits. On a Student visa your term-time hours are capped by the visa rules, and we have to check the cap and stay within it.
I live in Chessington and don't drive. Is the Kingston home realistic?
Usually, yes. The Chessington branch and buses through Hook and Tolworth both run towards Kingston and Surbiton. Very early starts and late finishes are the awkward part, so tell us which hours you could reliably make.
Could I work at both the Kingston and Whitton homes?
Ask us. Whitton is on the Twickenham side of the river, roughly 20 to 30 minutes from Kingston, so working at both may be possible, but it depends on where we need people when you apply.
Is there an office in Kingston for interviews?
No. Our only office is in Lewisham. We usually start with a phone call and agree any face-to-face meeting with you.
I already care for a relative in Kingston. Can I still apply?
Yes, if the hours work for you both. You're also entitled to a carer's assessment, which the council has Kingston Carers' Network in Tolworth carry out; the council's carer's assessment page explains how to ask for one.
