Care Jobs in Richmond upon Thames
If you live in Richmond upon Thames, the two realistic jobs with us are support work at our supported living home in Whitton, inside the borough, and live-in care, which is open to anyone in London. Regular visiting care is harder: our only office is in Lewisham, over an hour away by train.
Support work at our home in Whitton
One of our three supported living houses is in Whitton, TW2, so for most of the borough this is a local job. Residents make their own decisions; a support worker helps them plan and cook a meal, sort out a bill, get to an appointment, or practise the bus route into Twickenham until they can do it alone. You can read about the house on our Whitton home page.
How easy the commute is depends on where in the borough you live:
- Twickenham, St Margarets and Richmond (TW1, TW9, TW10): Whitton station is on the South Western Railway Hounslow loop, which also stops at Twickenham, St Margarets and Richmond. From Twickenham the drive is 5 to 10 minutes.
- Teddington, Hampton and Hampton Hill (TW11, TW12): about 15 to 25 minutes by road. By train it means at least one change, usually at Twickenham.
- Ham and Hampton Wick: our Kingston home is just as close, about 10 to 15 minutes by bus or road. Tell us if you would rather work there.
- Kew, Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen (TW9, SW13, SW14): roughly 25 to 35 minutes to either Whitton or Kingston. From Barnes, Mortlake and North Sheen, Hounslow loop trains run through to Whitton.
Twickenham Stadium sits between Whitton and Twickenham. On event days roads close and the stations are packed, so allow extra time for a shift.
Live-in carer placements in Richmond’s houses
A live-in carer moves into the client’s home and has a bedroom of their own. They support one person or a couple, with breaks and time off built in and cover arranged by us. Your home postcode doesn’t matter.
Richmond has very few tower blocks, so a placement here usually means a house. In the tall Victorian terraces of Twickenham, St Margarets, Kew and Barnes the stairs are steep and the bathrooms small, so a stairlift or a bed moved downstairs is often part of the plan. The interwar semis of Whitton and Hampton are easier to work in. The family’s side of this is on our live-in care page.
Can I get visiting care work in Richmond?
We can’t promise it. Visiting rounds only work when clients live close together, and our visiting work is organised from our Lewisham office in south-east London: about 55 to 65 minutes each way from Barnes or Mortlake via Waterloo, 60 to 70 from Richmond, and 75 to 90 from Twickenham, Teddington or Hampton.
Whether we have visiting clients in Richmond depends on who needs care when you apply, so ask. If a round took you into one of the borough’s controlled parking zones, which cover Richmond town centre, Kew, Barnes, Twickenham, St Margarets and Teddington, the council issues operational parking permits to carers who need to park in a particular zone during restricted hours to do their job.
What the work involves
- Help with washing, dressing and continence
- Prompting or giving medication, with a record each time
- Shopping, cooking and keeping the home in order
- Moving and handling on stairs and with equipment
- Company on walks, at clubs and at appointments
- Clear notes for colleagues and families
Our registered specialisms are dementia, physical disabilities and sensory impairments, for adults both under and over 65. Palliative care is one of our services, so supporting someone near the end of life can be part of a live-in role.
How do I become a carer in Richmond upon Thames with no experience?
You don’t need a care qualification to apply. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards that cover safeguarding, dignity, infection control, communication and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train their staff in learning disability and autism, which is part of the preparation for supported living work at Whitton. If you have looked after a relative or volunteered, tell us.
The checks we must carry out first
- An enhanced DBS check, including the adults’ barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
- Your right to work in the UK, checked under the government’s rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to keep you within that limit.
- References from your most recent employer and from any earlier job in care.
This page lists no pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns. They depend on the role and on what is open when you contact us. Ask and we will give you a straight answer.

Questions from Richmond applicants
Questions families ask us about Richmond upon Thames. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionI study at St Mary’s in Strawberry Hill. Could I work shifts at Whitton?
Possibly. Send us your timetable and we’ll see what fits. If you are on a Student visa, your term-time hours are capped under the visa rules, and we have to check the cap and keep to it.
Is a job with you the same as being a personal assistant paid through a direct payment?
No. Some Richmond residents use a council direct payment to employ a personal assistant directly, and the council names Ruils as its direct payment support service, which helps those employers with recruitment and payroll. With us, you would be employed by a CQC-registered agency, and we handle the training, supervision and cover.
Is there an office in Richmond or Twickenham where I can be interviewed?
No. Our only office is in Lewisham. We usually start with a phone call. Any face-to-face meeting is agreed with you, and if you are applying for the Whitton home, ask whether it can take place there.
I already look after a family member in the borough. Can I still apply?
Yes, if the hours work for both of you. You are also entitled to a carer’s assessment from Richmond Council. Richmond Carers Centre on Briar Road, off Twickenham Green, offers free advice and support to unpaid carers.
I live in Barnes. Is visiting work in south-east London realistic?
Barnes is the closest part of the borough to Lewisham, but at about an hour each way it is hard to keep up day after day. Live-in placements, or the Whitton home on the Hounslow loop line, will usually suit you better.
