Care Jobs for Wandsworth Residents

If you live in Wandsworth, you can apply to us for live-in care work anywhere in London, or for support work at our homes in Kingston upon Thames and Whitton, which are a direct train ride from Clapham Junction, Earlsfield or Putney. Visiting care is harder to promise: our only office is in Lewisham, SE13, and visiting work depends on where our clients live when you apply.

Can I work for a care agency from Wandsworth without driving?

Yes, for two of our three kinds of work. Wandsworth is well placed for the supported living homes because it sits on South Western Railway's routes west, and live-in work doesn't involve a daily commute at all. Visiting work is the one where your postcode matters.

Support work at our Kingston and Whitton homes

Our supported living homes help adults with their everyday lives: cooking a meal together, keeping on top of a tenancy, getting to college, or practising a journey until someone can make it alone.

  • Clapham Junction, Earlsfield and Battersea: trains run to Kingston via Wimbledon in about half an hour.
  • Wandsworth Town and Putney: Hounslow loop trains reach Whitton without a change.
  • Roehampton: no station, but the 85 bus runs to Kingston.
  • Tooting, Balham and Furzedown: a longer trip, usually changing at Wimbledon or Clapham Junction. Check the early and late journeys before you apply.

The third home, in Uxbridge, is a long way from anywhere in the borough, so only ask about it if you drive or are moving west.

Live-in care: your postcode doesn't matter

A live-in carer moves into the client's home, with a bedroom of their own, and supports one person or a couple, with agreed breaks and time off. Because you live where you work, it is open to you wherever you are in London.

Live-in placements inside Wandsworth tend to be in the bigger family houses towards Putney Heath and the commons, where there is a spare room. Many Victorian terraces in Balham, Earlsfield and Tooting have been split into flats with steep stairs, which makes moving and handling harder and often leaves no room for a live-in carer. Our live-in care page explains the role from the family's side.

Visiting work: honest about the distance

Our visiting work is planned from our office on Lewisham High Street, and south-east London is where we can offer it most readily. From Clapham Junction or Battersea, Lewisham is roughly 35 to 45 minutes by train. From Tooting or Balham allow 45 to 55 minutes, and from Putney or Southfields closer to an hour. If you would travel to south-east London for visits, say which hours you could reliably get there.

Visiting inside Wandsworth depends on whether we support anyone near you at the time. Driving is not simple either. Controlled parking zones cover most of the borough, carers usually rely on the client's visitor permits, and those permits only work in the zone they were issued for, not on housing estates or private roads. The council's parking zones page shows the boundaries.

What the work involves

  • Personal care: washing, dressing, continence
  • Medication support, recorded every time
  • Cooking, cleaning and shopping
  • Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Company, outings and appointments
  • Clear notes for colleagues and families

We support people living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory loss, and some at the end of life. A live-in placement in Wandsworth might start the day someone comes home from St George's in Tooting, the borough's main hospital, so you could be working alongside district nurses and therapists in the first weeks.

Do I need qualifications to become a carer?

No. You can apply without a care qualification. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards covering safeguarding, dignity, infection control and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train staff in learning disability and autism, which matters most at the supported living homes.

The checks we must carry out

As a CQC-registered provider, we cannot let anyone start until these are done:

  1. An enhanced DBS check including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa limits your hours, as student visas do, we must keep to the limit.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.

No pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns appear on this page. They depend on the role and what is open when you contact us. Ask and we will tell you plainly.

Wandsworth FAQs

Questions from Wandsworth applicants

Questions families ask us about Wandsworth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I live in Earlsfield. Is the Kingston home a realistic daily commute?

It is one of the easier ones. Earlsfield is on the line through Wimbledon to Kingston. Check the first and last trains against the shifts you would be working before you commit.

I study at the University of Roehampton. Can I work part-time?

You can apply. If you are on a student visa, we must check your right to work and keep within your permitted hours during term. Tell us your timetable and we will say honestly whether any role fits around it.

Is there an office in Clapham Junction or Tooting where I can be interviewed?

No. Our only office is on Lewisham High Street. We usually start with a phone call and then agree whether and where to meet.

I live in a Nine Elms tower. Would visiting work be closer for me than for others in the borough?

A little. The Northern line extension and the trains from nearby Vauxhall make south-east London easier to reach from Nine Elms than from Putney or Roehampton. Visiting work still depends on where our clients are when you apply, so ask.

I already look after my mum in Southfields. Can I still apply?

Yes, if the hours work for you both. You can also ask Wandsworth Council for a carer's assessment of your own, and Wandsworth Carers' Centre (020 8877 1200) supports family carers in the borough.
