Care and Support Worker Jobs for Merton Residents

If you live in Merton, you can apply to work with us as a live-in carer anywhere in London, or as a support worker at our supported living home in Kingston upon Thames, which borders the borough. Visiting care work inside Merton depends on whether we have clients there when you apply, because our only office is in Lewisham, SE13.

Which role makes sense from where you live?

Merton is wide, and the two ends of the borough face different ways. Wimbledon, Raynes Park and West Barnes look west towards Kingston. Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon sit on the Northern line, with a direct line into central London. Mitcham and Morden connect to everything else mainly through the tram, the Northern line and Thameslink.

  • West of the borough (SW19, SW20, KT3): the Kingston home is the natural fit, and live-in work is open to you too.
  • Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon: the best-placed parts of Merton for getting to our south-east London clients, so ask about visiting work as well.
  • Mitcham and Morden (CR4, SM4): live-in work suits most people here. Kingston is possible, but allow 40 to 60 minutes each way.

Support work at our Kingston home

Our Kingston home supports adults to live in their own home and make their own choices. A shift there might mean cooking together, helping someone with a budget or a benefits letter, going with them to an appointment, or practising a bus journey until they can make it alone.

From Wimbledon, the 57 and 131 buses run to Kingston, and trains from Wimbledon and Raynes Park stop at Norbiton and Kingston. Driving takes about 15 to 25 minutes from Wimbledon. Early and late shifts are easier from the western side of the borough. Our other homes, in Whitton and Uxbridge, are further away, though you can ask about them if you drive.

Live-in care work: where you live doesn't matter

A live-in carer moves into the client's home, with their own bedroom, and supports one person or a couple through the day, with breaks and time off built in. Because you stay where the work is, live-in roles are open to applicants from any part of Merton.

If a placement turns out to be in Merton, the house shapes the job. The big Victorian and Edwardian houses around Wimbledon Village and the Common often have a spare room but steep stairs and split levels, which matters when you help someone move around. Morden's interwar houses, many on the St Helier estate, are usually easier to manage on the ground floor. The family's side of this is on our live-in care page.

Is visiting care work available in Merton?

Not reliably. Visiting rounds are planned from our office on Lewisham High Street, and whether there is visiting work in Merton depends on who we support there at the time you apply. If you would travel, the journey from Colliers Wood or South Wimbledon to Lewisham takes roughly 45 to 55 minutes, on the Northern line to London Bridge and then the train. Mitcham, Morden and Raynes Park are about an hour or more away.

If you drive to visits in Merton, parking needs planning. The council lists dozens of controlled parking zones, from Wimbledon Town Centre to Mitcham, so carers often use the client's visitor permits. Housebound residents and Blue Badge holders in a zone can buy a carer parking permit. Extra restrictions also apply around Wimbledon Park during the Championships each summer.

What the work involves

  • Washing, dressing and continence care
  • Medication support, recorded every time
  • Cooking, cleaning and shopping
  • Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Company, outings and appointments
  • Clear daily notes for colleagues and families

The people we support include those living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory loss, and some who are nearing the end of life.

Can I become a carer in Merton with no experience?

Yes. You don't need a qualification to apply. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards that cover safeguarding, dignity, infection control and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train staff in learning disability and autism, following the Oliver McGowan code of practice, which is especially relevant at the Kingston home. If you have looked after a relative or volunteered, tell us, because it counts.

The checks we must carry out

  1. An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Proof of your right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa limits your hours, we must keep to the limit.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any previous care employer.

You won't find pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns on this page. They depend on the role and on what is open when you apply. Ask us and we'll give you a straight answer.

Merton FAQs

Questions from Merton applicants

Questions families ask us about Merton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I live in Raynes Park. How easy is it to get to the Kingston home?

It is the easiest commute from anywhere in Merton. Trains from Raynes Park stop at Norbiton and Kingston, and buses run along the Kingston Road. Tell us which shifts you could reliably reach.

I'm in Mitcham and don't drive. What should I apply for?

Live-in work is the most practical, because you stay with the client. The Kingston home is possible by tram to Wimbledon and then a train or bus, but allow up to an hour each way.

Is there an office in Wimbledon where I can be interviewed?

No. Our only office is in Lewisham. We usually start with a phone call and agree with you whether and where to meet in person.

I already care for my mum in Morden. Can I still apply?

Yes, if the hours work for you both. You may also be entitled to a carer's assessment of your own, which you can ask for through Carers First Merton on 0300 303 1555.
