Care Jobs for Hammersmith and Fulham Residents

If you live in Hammersmith and Fulham, there are two roles with us that fit your address best. One is support worker at our Whitton or Uxbridge supported living homes, both within an hour by District or Piccadilly line. The other is live-in carer, which you can do from anywhere in London. Visiting care is harder to offer, because our only office is in Lewisham, around an hour away across London.

Which care jobs can I do from Hammersmith and Fulham?

Supported living support workers travel each shift to one of our three homes in Whitton, Uxbridge and Kingston upon Thames. All three are west or south-west of H&F.

Live-in carers stay in the client's home for the length of a placement, so your own postcode barely matters.

Visiting carers go from house to house during the day, and most of that work is near our Lewisham office in SE13. From H&F that's a long commute.

Your commute to our homes, by postcode

  • W6, around Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook: Whitton is your nearest home. If you drive, the A316 over Chiswick Bridge is the quicker commute; without a car, it's the District line to Richmond plus one South Western Railway stop.
  • Hammersmith Broadway, Barons Court and W14: the Piccadilly line runs to Uxbridge with no change in about 45 to 55 minutes. Many westbound Piccadilly trains go to Heathrow instead, so check the destination before you board.
  • W12, Shepherd's Bush and White City: Uxbridge, by getting to Hammersmith first on the Hammersmith & City or Circle line, or by bus. Westbound Central line trains from White City go to Ealing Broadway or West Ruislip, not Uxbridge.
  • SW6, Fulham and Sands End: Kingston is the practical one: ride the Wimbledon branch of the District line to the end and change onto a train to Kingston, or cross Putney Bridge if you drive.

The homes are described on our supported living page.

Live-in carer: open to you wherever you live

A live-in carer has their own bedroom in the client's home and supports one person, or a couple, through the day. Breaks and time off are built into the arrangement, and we arrange cover for them. Read our live-in care page to see what families expect from the role.

Is visiting care work realistic from Hammersmith and Fulham?

Not as a day-to-day job, for most people. Our office is at Tower House, Lewisham High Street. Getting there from H&F takes roughly 50 to 65 minutes: the District line to Victoria and a Southeastern train to Lewisham, or the Overground round via Clapham Junction from Shepherd's Bush or Imperial Wharf.

Visiting work inside H&F depends on whether we have clients there at the time, and we can't promise any. If it's what you want, say so when you apply. If you'd drive between calls in H&F itself, you need to know a few things:

  • Almost every street is in a controlled parking zone. Clients book visitor parking for their carers through RingGo.
  • In south Fulham, cameras either side of Wandsworth Bridge Road fine non-residents who drive through. The council's Clean Air Neighbourhood page confirms residents can book carers in through RingGo for free.
  • Hammersmith Bridge is closed to cars, so trips south of the river go via Putney, Wandsworth or Chiswick bridges. Match days at Stamford Bridge, Craven Cottage and Loftus Road add to the traffic.

A shift, in practice

  • Help with washing, dressing and using the toilet
  • Prompting or giving medication, and recording it
  • Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Cooking food the person actually likes
  • Company, conversation and trips out
  • Clear notes for whoever comes next

The people we support may be living with dementia, a physical disability or sensory loss, or be nearing the end of life.

Before your first shift: training and legal checks

You don't need a qualification to apply. New care workers work through the Care Certificate standards from Skills for Care, which cover safeguarding, dignity, infection control, communication and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train staff in learning disability and autism. Mention any caring you've done for family.

The law requires us to complete these checks before you work with anyone:

  1. An enhanced DBS check, including the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. A right to work check under the government's right to work rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to stay within them.
  3. References from your most recent employer and any earlier care employer.

This page doesn't list pay, vacancies or shift patterns. They depend on the role and on what's open when you apply. Ask us and we'll tell you plainly.

Hammersmith and Fulham FAQs

Questions from H&F applicants

Questions families ask us about Hammersmith and Fulham. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can I be interviewed somewhere in Hammersmith?

No. We have no office in the borough. We usually start with a phone call, and any meeting in person happens at our Lewisham office.

I'm a student at Imperial's White City campus. Can I do weekend shifts?

Tell us when you're free and we'll see if it fits. A student visa caps your working hours in term time, and part of our right to work check is making sure we keep inside that cap.

I speak Polish. Is that useful?

It can be. Hammersmith has a long-established Polish community, and some clients relax more with a carer who speaks their language. List every language you speak, though we can't promise it decides your placement.

Do I need a car?

No, not for supported living or live-in work. If you do drive, all of Greater London is inside the ULEZ, so check your car complies.
