Care Jobs for Lambeth Residents

If you live in Lambeth, you can apply to us for live-in care work anywhere in London, or for support work at our supported living homes in Kingston upon Thames and Whitton, both reachable by train from Vauxhall. Visiting care work is less certain: our only office is in Lewisham, SE13, and whether we have visiting clients near you depends on who we support when you apply.

North or south Lambeth: it changes which role fits

Lambeth runs from Waterloo down to Crystal Palace, and the two ends travel very differently. The north has the Victoria, Northern, Bakerloo and Jubilee lines. Streatham, Tulse Hill and West Norwood have no Tube, only Southern, Thameslink and Southeastern trains.

  • Waterloo, Kennington and Lambeth North (SE1, SE11): the closest part of the borough to our south-east London clients, so ask about visiting work as well as live-in.
  • Vauxhall, Stockwell and Clapham (SW4, SW8, SW9): well placed for the Kingston and Whitton homes, with South Western Railway from Vauxhall or a short hop to Clapham Junction.
  • Streatham, Norbury and West Norwood (SW16, SE27): live-in work suits most people here. Thameslink to Wimbledon puts Kingston within reach too.

Live-in care work from anywhere in Lambeth

A live-in carer moves into the client's home, with their own bedroom, and supports one person or a couple, with breaks and time off built in. Because you live where you work, your postcode doesn't limit you.

If a placement is inside Lambeth, expect flats more often than houses. Much of the borough is post-war estates, from Stockwell Park to Central Hill, and Victorian terraces split into upstairs flats with narrow stairs, which makes hoists and bathing harder work. The houses with a spare room for a live-in carer tend to be further south, in Streatham, West Norwood and Herne Hill. Our live-in care page explains the role from the family's side.

Is there visiting care work in Lambeth?

Not reliably. Lambeth doesn't border Lewisham, because Southwark lies between them, and our visiting care is organised from our office on Lewisham High Street. Visiting work in Lambeth depends on whether we support anyone near you at the time. If you would travel to Lewisham, Waterloo East is roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Lewisham by Southeastern train, Brixton and Herne Hill are 35 to 50 minutes away, and Streatham or West Norwood about an hour.

Driving between visits in Lambeth is hard. Controlled parking zones cover most of the borough, and low traffic neighbourhoods close some through-routes. The council's personal carer's parking permit is meant for family members and friends who care, gives up to three hours in one zone and doesn't work on housing estates, so don't plan a paid round around it. In the north, the Tube and buses are usually quicker.

Support work at our Kingston and Whitton homes

Our supported living homes help adults live their own lives. A shift might mean cooking together, sorting a benefits letter or practising a bus route until someone can do it alone.

From Vauxhall, South Western Railway trains run through Clapham Junction and Wimbledon to Norbiton and Kingston, and Hounslow loop trains reach Whitton. Allow roughly 45 to 60 minutes door to door from north or west Lambeth. From Streatham, Tulse Hill or Herne Hill, take Thameslink to Wimbledon and change there. Our third home, in Uxbridge, is an hour and a quarter or more away, so only ask about it if you drive or live out west.

What the work involves

  • Washing, dressing and continence care
  • Medication support, recorded every time
  • Meals, cleaning and shopping
  • Moving and handling, sometimes with a hoist
  • Company, outings and appointments
  • Clear notes for colleagues and families

We support people living with dementia, physical disabilities or sensory loss, and some who are nearing the end of life. In Lambeth that can mean working alongside a district nurse from Guy's and St Thomas', or helping someone settle back in after a stay at St Thomas' or King's College Hospital.

How do I become a carer in Lambeth with no experience?

Apply. You don't need a qualification first. New care workers complete the Care Certificate, the Skills for Care standards covering safeguarding, privacy and dignity, infection control and person-centred care. CQC-registered providers must also train staff in learning disability and autism, which matters most at the supported living homes.

Checks before your first shift

  1. An enhanced DBS check with the adults' barred list, through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
  2. Your right to work in the UK, checked under the government's rules. If your visa limits your hours, we have to keep to that limit.
  3. References, including your most recent employer and any earlier care employer.

This page lists no pay rates, vacancies or shift patterns. They depend on the role and on what is open when you get in touch. Ask us and we'll tell you straight.

Lambeth FAQs

Questions from Lambeth applicants

Questions families ask us about Lambeth. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
I live in Kennington. Could I do visiting work in Lewisham?

It is one of the more realistic commutes from Lambeth: the Northern line to London Bridge, then a Southeastern train to Lewisham. Tell us which hours you could reliably reach SE13 and we will say honestly whether there is work that fits.

I'm in Streatham and don't drive. Which role makes most sense?

Live-in work, since you stay with the client. The Kingston home is possible by Thameslink to Wimbledon and then a train or bus, but allow around an hour each way.

Is there an office in Brixton where I can be interviewed?

No. Our only office is on Lewisham High Street. We usually start with a phone call and then agree whether and where to meet.

If I drive to clients in Lambeth, can I get a carer's parking permit?

Lambeth's personal carer's permit is for family members and friends caring for a resident in a parking zone, not for paid care workers. Talk to us about parking before you take on visits that depend on a car.

I already care for my dad in Tulse Hill. Can I still apply?

Yes, if the hours work for both of you. You can also ask Lambeth Council for a carer's assessment of your own, and Carers' Hub Lambeth on Brixton Road (020 7501 8970) supports family carers whether or not they have had one.
