Home Care in Shoreditch
Care at home for the older residents who still live among the offices and bars: estate flats around Shoreditch Park and Hoxton, mansion blocks, and new-build flats off Old Street and Great Eastern Street.
Yes, we can provide home care in Shoreditch, both visiting care and live-in care. It is the closest corner of Hackney to our Lewisham office, so visits here are among the most practical we offer north of the river, though we still confirm carer availability for your times before agreeing them. A free home assessment and a written care plan come first.
Is it Hackney, Islington or Tower Hamlets?
Shoreditch is a district, not a borough, and three councils meet here. East of Shoreditch High Street, around Redchurch Street, Arnold Circus and Columbia Road, you are in Tower Hamlets. West along Old Street towards City Road, parts are in Islington. Postcodes do not help: an EC2A, N1 or E2 address could fall under more than one council. The council tax bill settles which council does the needs assessment; we cover all three. This page deals with the Hackney side; for the other side of the High Street see home care in Tower Hamlets.
Where older people live in Shoreditch
The Shoreditch on postcards is offices, start-ups and late bars between Old Street and Great Eastern Street. Behind it, especially north-west towards Shoreditch Park and the Provost Estate off Murray Grove, are council estates where some tenants have lived for decades, plus older mansion blocks and a growing number of new-build flats.
Each brings different practical questions. In estate towers and walk-up blocks it is the lift and the stairs. In mansion blocks it is often a narrow lift, or none, and an old bathroom. The new-build and converted-warehouse flats are the easiest to care in, with lifts and step-free access, and some have a second bedroom.
The other thing particular to Shoreditch is the night. Weekend bedtime visits can mean crowded pavements around Old Street and Curtain Road, which is worth planning for if someone is anxious about answering the door.
Getting here: the quickest Hackney trip from SE13
Our carers have two direct routes. One is Southeastern from Lewisham to New Cross, then the Overground Windrush line to Shoreditch High Street or Hoxton. The other is the DLR from Lewisham to Bank and two stops on the Northern line to Old Street. Either way it is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. Kingsland Road buses such as the 149, 242 and 243 link the stations to the estates further north.
Driving here rarely makes sense. Hackney lists North Shoreditch (zone B) as controlled Monday to Saturday until midnight, and South Shoreditch as weekdays until 6.30pm and Saturday mornings. Drivers should check the council's zone list first.
GPs, St Leonard's and the Royal London
Two GP practices are a short walk north, in Hoxton: The Hoxton Surgery at 12 Rushton Street, N1 5DR, and The Lawson Practice at 85 Nuttall Street, N1 5HZ. Nuttall Street is also home to St Leonard's Hospital, a community health base with no A&E.
When it comes to hospital stays, Shoreditch is one of the parts of Hackney where people may be admitted to the Royal London in Whitechapel, run by Barts Health, as well as to Homerton. Either way, discharge with care is arranged with Hackney Adult Social Care. If you want us to pick up when someone comes home, tell the ward and call us early; our hospital discharge page explains how we fit in.
How much does home care in Shoreditch cost, and will Hackney pay?
We quote in writing after the free assessment, because the cost depends on how many visits are needed and what happens in them.
For council help, request a needs assessment through Hackney's online adult social care form or on 020 8356 6262. A financial assessment follows, and people with savings above the £23,250 upper capital limit usually pay for themselves. If Hackney does fund care, a direct payment lets you choose the agency. Our Hackney home care page sets out the borough process step by step.
Help we offer in Shoreditch
Live-in care in a Shoreditch flat
A live-in carer needs their own bedroom. In a converted-warehouse or new-build flat with a second bedroom, that can work well, with lifts and step-free access as a bonus. In a one-bedroom estate flat it can't, and Shoreditch's short journey from SE13 makes daily visits the more practical choice there.
A break for the family carer
If you look after someone in Shoreditch, ask Hackney for a carer's assessment. Eligible carers can receive carers' direct payments, and the council can also hold a "what if" emergency plan for when you are suddenly unable to care. We can provide the cover itself, from a weekly sit-in to a fortnight of live-in care. See respite care in Hackney.

Shoreditch questions
Questions families ask us about Shoreditch. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy aunt lives just off Columbia Road. Is that Shoreditch for council purposes?
Columbia Road is on the Tower Hamlets side, so her needs assessment would come from Tower Hamlets Council. We can still provide her care.
Can carers do a late evening visit when the streets are busy?
Yes, where we have a carer available for that slot. Tell us at the assessment if late-night noise or crowds outside the building worry the person, and we will agree how the carer arrives and identifies themselves.
He was treated at the Royal London. Can you still arrange care through Hackney?
Yes. The hospital does not change the council; if he lives on the Hackney side, Hackney Adult Social Care is involved in his discharge, wherever he was treated.
Can a carer collect prescriptions from the GP or pharmacy?
Yes. Collecting medicines and helping someone take them at the right times is part of our medication support, and the plan records exactly what the carer does.
