Home Care in Hoxton
Visiting carers and live-in care in N1 and E2, from Hoxton Street and Pitfield Street to the Arden and Wenlock Barn estates and the streets off Kingsland Road.
Yes, we provide home care in Hoxton, with carers visiting at set times for personal care, medication, meals and company, or living in. Hoxton is the part of Hackney with the most direct journey from our Lewisham office, so regular visits are usually realistic, subject to having a carer free at your times.
How do I arrange home care for a parent in Hoxton?
- Call us on 0203 375 4047 or 07446 010486 with the address and what has become difficult. We check the times against our carers' rotas and tell you plainly whether we can cover them.
- Book the free assessment. We visit the flat, meet your parent and look at the stairs, the lift, the bathroom and how they get to the shops.
- Agree the written care plan, including visit times, what each visit covers and who in the family to call.
- If the council may pay, ask Hackney Adult Social Care for a needs assessment through the council's online request or on 020 8356 6262. You can arrange private care while you wait and switch to council funding or direct payments later.
Costs depend on the plan, so we give a written quote after the assessment. Whether the council contributes depends on its means test. Our Hackney home care page explains both.
Arden, Wenlock Barn and the lift
Some Georgian and Victorian terraces survive in Hoxton, but many older residents live on the big post-war council estates, such as Arden and Wenlock Barn, a few streets from the offices and bars of Shoreditch. Many have rented the same flat for decades. In a tower block, a working lift decides whether someone can get out. When it breaks, the carer climbs the stairs and the visit goes ahead, but your parent may be stuck at home. We note outages and adjust the plan so shopping and prescriptions still happen.
Inside, estate flats are usually all on one level, which suits a walking frame or a wheelchair better than a terraced house does. The usual problem is a bath with no shower. Ask the council for an occupational therapy assessment. A bath lift or a level-access shower can make the difference between a strip wash and a proper one.
Why Hoxton is easy for us to reach
From Lewisham, a carer can take the DLR to Shadwell and change to the Overground Windrush line north, through Whitechapel and Shoreditch High Street, to Hoxton. Hoxton station has lifts to both platforms. The station entrance is on Geffrye Street, behind the Museum of the Home. On the roads, the 149, 242 and 243 run along Kingsland Road past St Leonard's Hospital, the 394 runs along Hoxton Street and Pitfield Street, the 21, 76 and 141 use New North Road, and the 26 and 55 run along Hackney Road.
If a carer drives, Hoxton's parking zone F is controlled on weekdays and Saturday mornings, and the Wenlock zone (A) on weekdays. Most come by train or bus.
Hoxton Street Market. The market dates back to 1687 and still runs on Hoxton Street, with household goods on weekdays and independent stalls on Saturdays. A slow walk down it with a carer, perhaps with a rollator, is a real outing. That is what companionship visits are for.
Which hospital will Mum come home from?
Hoxton sits between two hospital trusts. An emergency from the south of Hackney may go to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, run by Barts Health. Many residents are treated at Homerton University Hospital instead. Closer to home, St Leonard's Hospital on Nuttall Street has no A&E. It is a community health base, and the City and Hackney Integrated Learning Disability Service has its clinical team there. Whichever ward it is, call us while discharge is being planned. Our hospital discharge support page explains the handover.
What visits can cover
Personal care morning and evening; medication support; home help with meals, laundry and shopping on Hoxton Street; a sit-in service; dementia care built around a familiar routine; and complex, palliative and nail care.
Live-in care and respite
On the Arden and Wenlock Barn estates, a flat that once housed a family may now have a spare bedroom, which is what live-in care needs; in a one-bedroom flat, visits are the answer. For a son or daughter doing the caring, respite care can cover a holiday or a regular evening off. Because Hoxton is on the Windrush line, a short run of extra visits while you are away is easier for us to staff here than in the north of the borough.

Hoxton FAQs
Questions families ask us about Hoxton. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionIs Hoxton in Hackney or Islington?
Hoxton is in Hackney, but Islington starts a few streets to the west, and Shoreditch to the south crosses into Tower Hamlets. Check the council tax bill, because that council handles the needs assessment. We cover all three.
Can you start visits the day Dad leaves the Royal London?
If we have a carer free for those times, yes. The earlier you call, the better the chance. We will tell you honestly if we cannot cover a visit.
My brother has a learning disability and lives in Hoxton. Can you support him at home?
We can talk it through with you. His social work route is the Integrated Learning Disability Service (020 8356 7444), which plans support with the family. We can provide personal care and practical help as part of that plan, and we also have supported living homes outside Hackney.
Mum gets confused about her tablets. What can a carer do?
Prompt or give them as the care plan says and record each dose. If memory is getting worse, ask her GP to refer her to the NHS Diagnostic Memory Clinic for City and Hackney.
