Home Care in Hainault, IG6 and IG7

Live-in care, respite and, where we can staff it, visiting care for older and disabled people on the Hainault Estate, from Manford Way to the edge of Hainault Forest.

Yes, we can arrange care in Hainault. Because it is one of the furthest parts of Redbridge from our Lewisham office, live-in care is usually the most dependable option here. Regular visits are possible only when we have a carer who can reach you consistently, and we check that before agreeing to anything. Every arrangement starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

An estate built in six years

Most of Hainault was built in one go. The London County Council bought farmland on the edge of the old forest during the war and put up the Hainault Estate between 1947 and 1953: around 2,800 houses in the "cottage estate" style, with many of the roads named after the forest's history. Manford Way is the spine of it. Until 1965 part of it belonged to Chigwell, which is why some addresses still read "Chigwell".

The houses were council-built, and many are now owner-occupied. For care, that means a modest two-storey house with the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs, or a low-rise flat. At the assessment we look at whether the stairs are still safe, whether a stairlift or downstairs bed is needed, and, for an upper-floor flat, whether there is a lift. Redbridge's Occupational Therapy Team takes its own online referral for equipment and adaptations, and we can work around whatever it installs.

How far is Hainault from your Lewisham office?

A long way, and we would rather say so now. By public transport it is typically 60 to 75 minutes each way: the DLR to Stratford, then the Central line out along the Hainault loop through Gants Hill, Newbury Park, Barkingside and Fairlop. A short morning visit with that journey either side is hard to staff reliably.

Live-in care gets round the distance. The carer travels once, moves in, and the journey stops mattering.

Manford Way, the buses and the health centre

Hainault station (Central line) sits on the south-western side of the estate, and Grange Hill station is just over the border in Essex. For many older residents, though, the buses matter more than the Tube. The 150 runs along Manford Way to Fullwell Cross and Gants Hill. The 462 runs from the Limes Farm estate in Chigwell along Manford Way to Barkingside and Ilford. The 247 connects Hainault station with Barkingside and Romford.

Hainault Health Centre is on Manford Way, and The Forest Edge Practice is one of the GP surgeries there. Hainault Forest Country Park borders the estate to the east, and a slow walk there can be part of a companionship visit.

The 362 goes to King George Hospital. Route 362 runs from Grange Hill along Manford Way to King George Hospital in Goodmayes, the acute hospital most Hainault residents are discharged from. Some people from this eastern edge of the borough are treated at Queen's Hospital in Romford instead. On either route, the ward contacts Redbridge Adult Social Care to plan the discharge, and short-term reablement may follow. If longer-term help will be needed, call us while discharge is still being discussed. See our hospital discharge support.

How much does home care cost in Hainault?

That depends on who is paying and what the care involves, so we don't publish prices. If you ask Redbridge for help, the council carries out a free needs assessment and then a financial assessment. Under national Care Act guidance, someone whose savings are above the upper capital limit usually pays the full cost. If someone's needs are mainly health needs, NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay instead. For private care, we give a written quote after our own assessment. See our paying for care guide.

To ask for the council's assessment, use the online referral form on the Redbridge Adult Care contact page or phone 020 8708 7333. Our Redbridge home care page covers the council route, parking and local support in more detail.

Live-in care on the estate

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own. In a Hainault house that means a second bedroom or box room that can be cleared. A flat with one bedroom generally won't work. One carer can support a couple. We arrange the carer's daily breaks and cover their days off.

A break for whoever does the caring

If a husband, wife or adult child is doing most of the caring, they are entitled to a free carer's assessment from Redbridge, and council-arranged breaks come only after one. Redbridge Carers Support Service, in Ilford, gives advice and runs groups for older carers. With us, respite in Hainault usually means a live-in carer for a week or two while the family carer goes away.

Hainault FAQs

Hainault questions

Questions families ask us about Hainault. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's address says Chigwell, IG7. Is she in Redbridge?

Probably. Part of the Hainault Estate uses the Chigwell post town even though it has been in the London Borough of Redbridge since 1965. The council named on her council tax bill is the one to ask for an assessment. We can provide care either side of the border.

Can you send a carer every morning to get Dad up?

Only if we have a carer who can do that journey reliably, and from Lewisham to Hainault that is not a given. We will check before we promise anything. If we can't cover it, we will say so and talk you through live-in care.

Dad is in King George Hospital. When should we contact you?

As soon as the ward starts talking about discharge. Redbridge Adult Social Care will be involved in planning it, and there may be a period of reablement first. Calling early gives us time to arrange the assessment and a live-in carer if that is the right fit.

The only spare room in my parents' Manford Way house is tiny. Could a live-in carer sleep there?

Possibly. It needs to hold a single bed and somewhere for the carer's clothes, with a door that closes. We measure it up at the assessment and tell you honestly if it falls short.
