Home Care in Seven Kings, IG3

Visiting and live-in care in the Edwardian streets either side of the High Road, from Seven Kings station up towards Seven Kings Park and Newbury Park.

Yes, we can provide home care in Seven Kings, both visits and live-in care. The Elizabeth line makes IG3 one of the more practical parts of Redbridge for our carers to reach from Lewisham, though visits still depend on carer availability at the times you need. We begin with a free assessment in the home and a written care plan.

Edwardian terraces and the stairs problem

Seven Kings sits on the old Roman road from London to Colchester, now the High Road, but most of what you see was built between 1898 and 1910. The developer A. C. Corbett laid out long, regular streets of terraced houses around the station, which had opened in 1899, and those terraces still make up most of the district. Some have since been split into flats.

They are solid houses, and they share a design that becomes a problem with age: a narrow, steep staircase, often with a turn at the top, and the only bathroom upstairs at the back. When someone becomes unsteady, the questions come quickly. Can they still get up to wash? Is it safe to come down in the night? Should the bed move to the front room?

There is no single answer, and we work through it at the assessment. Sometimes a second banister and a carer walking behind are enough. Sometimes the safer plan is a strip wash downstairs on most days and a supported shower twice a week, or a commode at night. For a stairlift, grab rails or a level-access shower, the council's Occupational Therapy Team takes its own online referral through the Adult Care contact page.

Can a carer help with washing if the bathroom is upstairs?

Yes, as long as getting there is safe on the day. The care plan sets out how: which days are for a shower, what equipment is in place, and what the carer does if the person is too tired to manage the stairs. Personal care is planned around the house as much as the person, and in a Seven Kings terrace that mostly means planning around the stairs.

Reaching Seven Kings

Seven Kings station is on the Elizabeth line between Ilford and Goodmayes, with frequent trains, and it has had step-free access since 2019. The 86 bus runs along the High Road past the station. For anyone heading north, the nearest Tube is Newbury Park on the Central line. From our Lewisham office in SE13, the journey is around 50 minutes to an hour by DLR to Stratford and then the Elizabeth line. That is why visiting care here is realistic for us, though we have no base in Redbridge and still check carer availability first. Many streets near the station are in a controlled parking zone; look up yours on the council's CPZ map.

Out of the house. Seven Kings Park, with its tennis courts and paths, and the smaller Westwood Park on Meads Lane are close enough for a short walk with a carer. Getting out, even briefly, is part of good care, and a companionship visit can be built around it.

Who pays for home care in Seven Kings?

Redbridge Council can help if a Care Act needs assessment finds eligible needs. Request one through the online referral form or on 020 8708 7333; it is free. A financial assessment then sets what the council pays, and its share can come as a direct payment that you use to pay us. If you fund care yourself, we quote in writing after our assessment. More on the borough's routes is on our Redbridge home care page.

When visits are not enough

Live-in care needs a spare bedroom, which a three-bedroom terrace usually has, though not always once grown-up children or grandchildren are living at home. For a family carer who needs a break, respite can be a short live-in stay or extra visits. The council arranges breaks after a free carer's assessment. For someone with dementia, Redbridge Respite Care Association runs a day centre and respite at home from Padnall Road, Chadwell Heath.

Seven Kings FAQs

Seven Kings FAQs

Questions families ask us about Seven Kings. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our terrace has been converted into flats and Mum is on the first floor. Can you still help?

Yes. We look at the shared stairs and the entrance as well as the flat itself, because a carer may need to help her in and out. If the stairs stop being safe, an occupational therapist's advice is the next step.

Is a bed in the front room a sign it's time for a care home?

Not necessarily. Plenty of people live well with a downstairs bedroom and a commode, with carers visiting for washing and dressing. Whether it works depends on their needs, which is what the assessment looks at.

Which hospital would Dad be discharged from?

Usually King George Hospital on Barley Lane, Goodmayes, the nearest acute hospital to Seven Kings. Call us as soon as discharge is mentioned so we can plan visits around the date.

Can a carer collect prescriptions from the High Road?

Yes, if it is in the care plan. Collecting medicines and then supporting with them at the right times, with a record kept, is a routine part of visits.
