Home Care in Goodmayes, IG3
Care at home in Goodmayes, IG3 and the Redbridge part of RM6, from the streets around Goodmayes Road and Goodmayes Park up to Barley Lane, where King George Hospital stands.
Yes, we can provide home care in Goodmayes, including care for someone coming home from King George Hospital. Visiting care is realistic here because the Elizabeth line links Goodmayes to our Lewisham office, but it depends on having a carer free at the times you need. Live-in care is available wherever there is a spare bedroom. Both start with a free home assessment and a written care plan.
A hospital on the doorstep
Goodmayes is unusual: Redbridge's main acute hospital is part of the neighbourhood. King George Hospital, run by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, is on Barley Lane at the northern edge of Goodmayes, with its emergency department. NELFT's Goodmayes Hospital, the inpatient mental health site, shares the same stretch of road. Barley Lane is thought to take its name from Dorothy Barley, the last Abbess of Barking Abbey.
Being close does not make discharge simpler, but it does mean appointments, outpatient follow-ups and visiting are short trips. A carer can go with someone to a clinic and wait, as part of the care plan.
What happens when someone is discharged from King George to a Goodmayes home?
The ward contacts Redbridge Adult Social Care to arrange a discharge assessment and agree a care and support plan. Short-term intermediate care or reablement may come first. The council reviews the plan soon after discharge and sets up longer-term support if care is needed beyond six weeks; its leaving hospital page sets out the process.
Where we fit in: if the family wants private care, or reablement is ending and more help is needed, call us while the discharge is still being planned, not on the day. We will tell you honestly whether we can staff visits from the date the ward has in mind, or whether a live-in carer is the better fit. Our hospital discharge support page explains how it works.
Terraced streets, a park with a lake
Like Seven Kings next door, Goodmayes was built up mainly between 1898 and 1910 by the developer A. C. Corbett, after the station opened in 1901. Its lines of Edwardian terraces still dominate, with relatively few later additions, although the old Homebase site on the A118 has been redeveloped as new flats, One Goodmayes. A terrace usually means steep stairs and an upstairs bathroom, which shapes what a carer does after a hospital stay: often a bed downstairs for a while, a commode, and equipment arranged before the person gets home.
Goodmayes Park, with its lake and tennis courts, and the smaller Barley Lane Park give somewhere to walk once someone is back on their feet.
RM6 or IG3? Part of Goodmayes carries an RM6 postcode, and RM6 is split between Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham. Check the council tax bill: it tells you which council assesses care needs. This page covers the Redbridge route. For the other side of the line, see our Chadwell Heath page.
Getting here
Goodmayes station, on Goodmayes Road, is on the Elizabeth line with lifts to all platforms. The 364 and the EL3 serve the station, and the EL3, 173, 362 and 396 reach King George Hospital. From our Lewisham office in SE13 the journey is around an hour, by DLR to Stratford and then the Elizabeth line. We have no base in Redbridge.
Council funding and paying for care
For a Redbridge address, ask Redbridge Adult Social Services for a free Care Act needs assessment through the online referral form on the Adult Care contact page, or call 020 8708 7333. A financial assessment follows if needs are eligible. People whose needs are mainly health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, which the hospital team or GP can start. If you pay privately, we quote in writing after our assessment. Our Redbridge home care page covers the wider borough.
Live-in care and respite
If someone comes home needing help at all hours, live-in care may suit better than four visits a day. The carer needs their own bedroom. For a husband, wife or adult child caring full time, respite can be a short live-in stay or extra visits; the council arranges breaks after a free carer's assessment. Near the end of life, Saint Francis Hospice in Havering-atte-Bower serves Redbridge, and our palliative care supports people who want to stay at home.

Questions from Goodmayes families
Questions families ask us about Goodmayes. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum is on a ward at King George now. Is it too early to call?
No, it is the right time. Tell the ward you are arranging home care, and call us so we can plan the assessment and check carer availability around the likely discharge date.
Dad is coming home from Goodmayes Hospital after a mental health admission. Can you help?
We provide personal care and practical support at home, working alongside his NELFT team, who stay responsible for his mental health care. If there is a crisis, NELFT's Mental Health Direct line is 0800 995 1000, open 24 hours.
Can a carer go with Mum to her outpatient appointment?
Yes, if it is part of her care plan. From most of Goodmayes the hospital is a short bus ride, and the carer can stay with her through the appointment.
Our street has an RM6 postcode. Will Redbridge assess us?
Only if the address is in Redbridge. Part of RM6 is in Barking and Dagenham. The council tax bill shows which. We can provide care either way.
Is a hospital bed going to fit in a Goodmayes terrace?
Usually in the front room, yes. We check the space and the doorways at the assessment, and the hospital or council occupational therapist arranges the equipment itself.
