Home Care in Harold Hill, RM3

Care at home on the Harold Hill estate, from the streets around Gooshays Drive and Central Park to the edge of Dagnam Park and the Green Belt.

Yes, we can arrange care at home in Harold Hill. If your relative has a spare bedroom, we can arrange a live-in carer, which is the most dependable option this far from our Lewisham office. Visiting care depends on whether a carer is available at the times you need, so ask us first. Everything begins with a free home assessment and a written care plan.

An estate built in ten years

Harold Hill was built by the London County Council between 1948 and 1958 on the former Dagnams estate: about 7,600 homes for families moving out of bombed and overcrowded London. Many original tenants' families still live on the estate.

Most homes are brick terraced houses and low-rise flats. Some are still council-rented, others were bought under right to buy, and the council's regeneration programme is replacing some blocks. If the house has a third bedroom, even a small one, it can be enough for a live-in carer if it fits a proper bed and somewhere to keep their things. The bathroom is usually upstairs too, so equipment and stair access come up at almost every assessment. In the low-rise flats, check for a lift, or a ground-floor flat. If your relative is a council tenant, the council's housing service, not us, deals with adaptations, so raise them early.

No station, so think buses

Harold Hill has no railway station. Harold Wood, on the Elizabeth line, is about a mile south. Buses do the work: the 174, 256, 294, 346, 496 and 499 all serve the estate, and the 499 also runs into the grounds of Queen's Hospital in Romford. For a visiting carer coming from south-east London, the journey is typically well over an hour each way. That is the reason we never promise visits until a carer is matched. Most residential roads in Havering have no parking controls, but check the council's map for the street.

Health care on Gooshays Drive and nearby

Harold Hill Health Centre on Gooshays Drive (RM3 9SU) houses several GP practices, including Central Park Surgery, along with community clinics. When memory problems are the concern, the GP can refer to NELFT's Havering Memory Service, which is close by on Gubbins Lane in Harold Wood and includes Admiral Nurses. Hospital admissions and discharges are almost always through Queen's Hospital. Tell the ward early that you are arranging care at home, and read our discharge support page.

Carers' support is on the estate itself. Imago's Havering Carers Support Service runs a Monday afternoon drop-in at Harold Hill Library on Farnham Road, and a Tuesday afternoon drop-in at Paines Brook Court on Paines Brook Way, as well as monthly support groups at both. Call 0300 011 1965. You don't need to book a drop-in.

How do I arrange home care in Harold Hill through Havering Council?

Contact Havering Adult Social Care on 01708 432000 (weekdays, 9am to 5pm) or through the online enquiry form on the council's adult social care page. Ask for a needs assessment. A practitioner usually visits, and if your relative's needs are eligible, the council carries out a financial assessment and agrees a budget. Taking it as a direct payment lets you choose the agency. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route for people whose needs are mainly health needs. We quote in writing once we have assessed. Our Havering page covers the borough-wide picture.

Respite for long-term family carers

Where a husband, wife or daughter has been caring for years, a planned break is often what keeps things going. A live-in carer can stay for a week or two so the routine at home carries on. Ask Imago or the council for a carer's assessment first, because it can open up help with the cost. See respite care for how short stays work.

Harold Hill FAQs

Harold Hill questions

Questions families ask us about Harold Hill. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum's house has a box room. Is that big enough for a live-in carer?

It can be, if it takes a single bed, some storage and a door that closes. We look at it during the assessment. If it is too small, visiting care or a temporary change of rooms may work instead.

Dad is a council tenant and needs a level-access shower. Who arranges that?

Usually the council. Ask Adult Social Care for an occupational therapy assessment, and tell the housing service. While that is in progress, we can plan safe washing with whatever equipment is already in place.

Dad has just been referred to the memory service in Harold Wood. Can you help before there is a diagnosis?

Yes. Care is based on what someone needs day to day, not on a diagnosis. A carer can support routines, meals and medication prompts, and go with him to appointments on Gubbins Lane if that is in the plan.

I live in Harold Hill myself and help Mum every day. Where can I get support?

Start with Imago's drop-ins at Harold Hill Library on Monday afternoons or Paines Brook Court on Tuesdays, and ask the council for a carer's assessment. We can provide respite when you need a break.
