Home and Live-in Care in Holland Park

Care at home for older people in the villas and apartments around Holland Park, Holland Park Avenue, Addison Road and Campden Hill, from a few visits a week to a carer who lives in.

We can arrange care in Holland Park, and for many households here live-in care is the most practical form of it. The houses are large enough for a carer's room, and a carer who lives in doesn't depend on daily travel from our Lewisham office. Visiting care is also possible, subject to carer availability. Either way, Jackie, our registered manager, does a free assessment at home first.

Houses with room for a carer

Holland Park is one of the few parts of Kensington and Chelsea where a spare bedroom is the norm. The wide avenues of detached and semi-detached Victorian villas, on streets such as Holland Park itself, Holland Villas Road, Addison Road and Abbotsbury Road, were built for large households, and many older residents have lived in them for decades. Some have been split into apartments, often still generous ones.

That makes live-in care realistic here in a way it isn't in a one-bedroom conversion in W10. A live-in carer needs a private bedroom, somewhere to keep their things, and a proper daily break, which we plan with you. In return the person keeps their own house, their garden and their routine, with someone there through the day and in the house overnight.

Couples

Where a husband and wife both need some help, one live-in carer can often support both: full personal care for one, lighter practical help for the other. It keeps a couple together in their own home.

The house itself

Big houses bring their own problems. Several floors, a kitchen in the lower ground, a main bathroom two flights up. Part of our assessment is working out whether daily life can be brought onto one or two floors, and where a stairlift, grab rails or a level-access shower would make the difference. The council's occupational therapists can assess for equipment and adaptations.

Kensington and Chelsea or Hammersmith and Fulham?

Holland Park sits on the borough's western edge, and W14 addresses are split between two councils. Streets around Addison Road and Holland Villas Road are in Kensington and Chelsea, but much of W14 to the south and west is in Hammersmith and Fulham, which runs a different home care system. Check the council tax bill, or use gov.uk's find your local council tool with the postcode.

For a Kensington and Chelsea address, you can apply for a needs assessment online or ring Adult Social Care on 020 7361 3013. The team is based at the Town Hall on Hornton Street, at the other side of Holland Park. Our Kensington and Chelsea page has the wider picture.

Who pays for live-in care in Holland Park?

The council's means test counts savings, investments and, for a care home, property, so people above the national limits pay for their own care. Someone with significant health needs may qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, and it's worth asking for a checklist assessment before assuming you'll fund everything. If the council does fund care, a direct payment can be used to buy care from an agency of your choice. We quote in writing after the assessment; we don't give prices over the phone.

The park is part of the care plan. Holland Park's paths, the Kyoto Garden and the ruins of Holland House make a good, level-ish outing for someone who can still walk with an arm to lean on, or be pushed in a wheelchair. A daily walk there with a carer is worth writing into the plan, not leaving to chance.

Getting to Holland Park

Holland Park station is on the Central line, on Holland Park Avenue, and buses 31, 94, 148 and 228 stop outside. Shepherd's Bush, at the western end of the avenue, has the Central line and the Overground; the 49 and C1 run along the southern side near Addison Road. From Lewisham it takes about an hour by public transport, which is why visiting care here depends on carer availability. Parking is residents-only in permit bays, so a carer who drives uses pay-to-park bays.

Hospitals and after a stay

Depending on where you are in the area, admissions are usually to St Mary's in Paddington or Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith. If someone is coming home after a fall or an operation, short-term reablement may come through the council first. Call us early if you think longer-term or live-in care will follow: see hospital discharge care.

Respite: a fortnight's cover

If you are looking after a parent or partner yourself, a live-in carer for a week or two can cover a holiday or a hospital stay of your own. See respite care.

Holland Park FAQs

Holland Park: what families ask

Questions families ask us about Holland Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our address is W14. Which council assesses my mother?

It depends on the street. Part of W14 is in Kensington and Chelsea and part is in Hammersmith and Fulham. The council tax bill settles it, and so does gov.uk's council finder.

The house has four floors. Is live-in care still workable?

Usually, yes. We look at which floors the person really needs and often move daily life to one level. The carer's room can be on a different floor, as long as there's a reliable way to call them at night, such as a baby monitor or call bell.

Can the live-in carer look after both my parents?

Often one carer can, if one parent needs the main support and the other needs lighter help. If both need a lot of hands-on care, we'll say so at the assessment and discuss the options.

Does a live-in carer need a car or a parking space?

No. A live-in carer normally arrives by public transport with their luggage at the start of a placement, and the Central line at Holland Park makes that straightforward.
