Home Care in Shepherd's Bush
Home care visits and live-in carers around Shepherd's Bush Green, the Uxbridge Road, Goldhawk Road and the streets running up towards Loftus Road and Wormholt.
Yes, we provide home care in Shepherd's Bush, W12. Of everywhere in Hammersmith and Fulham, it is one of the easier places for our carers to reach from Lewisham, because it is served by both the Central line and the Overground. We start with a free assessment at home, then agree a written care plan covering visits, live-in care or both.
Can a carer get to Shepherd's Bush from Lewisham?
Usually, yes. Shepherd's Bush station is on the Central line and the Overground Mildmay line. A carer can take the Overground from Peckham Rye to Clapham Junction and change for Shepherd's Bush, or cross the City and pick up the Central line. Shepherd's Bush Market and Goldhawk Road, on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines, serve the southern streets. It is still a journey of around an hour, so regular early-morning or late-evening calls depend on who we have available. Tell us the times and we will give you a straight answer.
Carers who drive will find almost every street in a controlled parking zone, and the resident books them in through a virtual visitor permit. When QPR are at home at Loftus Road, the streets north of the Uxbridge Road fill up, so it is worth keeping fixture dates in mind.
From the Edward Woods towers to Askew Road terraces
The homes here range widely, and the care plan follows the building.
The Edward Woods Estate tower blocks, on the eastern side of Shepherd's Bush towards the Kensington border, have lifts. On a high floor, everything depends on them: if a lift is out of action, someone who can't manage stairs may be stuck indoors, and a carer has to know what the fallback is. We record it in the care plan. The Victorian terraces around Goldhawk Road, Askew Road and the Uxbridge Road are mostly divided into flats, often with narrow stairs and small bathrooms, which limits what equipment will fit. Towards Wormholt the council housing is lower-rise, often with gardens, and generally easier for care.
A whole terraced house can have room for a live-in carer. A one-bedroom flat in a tower can't, so care there is by visits.
Day care on Ellerslie Road. Nubian Life runs a day resource centre at 50 Ellerslie Road, W12. It was set up in 1995 for older African Caribbean residents and has since extended to older Asian residents. It offers activities and a break for family carers. Phone 020 8749 8017 to check current sessions. A carer can help someone get ready and out on day-centre mornings.
Who pays for home care in Shepherd's Bush?
If Hammersmith & Fulham Council arranges it, nobody: the council doesn't charge for home care. A Care Act assessment comes first, by phone on 0800 145 6095 or through a GP or community nurse referral. Care that you arrange privately with us is paid for by you, and we quote in writing after our own assessment. If the council agrees ongoing care, a direct payment lets you choose who provides it. You can combine the two: council care for the assessed hours, and private visits for extra hours or while the council assessment is being arranged. Our borough page has the details.
Hospital, then home
People in Shepherd's Bush are usually treated at Charing Cross Hospital on Fulham Palace Road. Hammersmith Hospital on Du Cane Road, just to the north, handles specialist heart, kidney and cancer care. The council's hospital assessment service for both sites is on 020 3311 1844. Call us as soon as you have a likely discharge date: see hospital discharge support.

Shepherd's Bush: common questions
Questions families ask us about Shepherd's Bush. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy aunt lives on a high floor of the Edward Woods Estate. What happens if the lift breaks?
We plan for it. The care plan notes what the carer does if the lift is out, such as whom to call and how to get essentials to her. Report repeated lift faults to the landlord, because they affect her care as much as her shopping.
Can a carer take Dad round Shepherd's Bush Market?
Yes, if he is able for it. That is what a companionship visit is for: a slow walk, his own shopping, and a cup of tea on the way back. The Uxbridge Road is busy, so we agree the route at the assessment.
Could you help Mum get to Nubian Life on her day-centre days?
We can help her get washed, dressed and ready in the morning, and be there when she gets home. Arrange the day-centre place itself, and any transport, directly with Nubian Life.
Do you cover the streets north of the Uxbridge Road towards Wormholt?
Yes, all of Shepherd's Bush, including Wormholt, the Askew Road area and the streets by Loftus Road. White City lies just to the north, and we cover that too.
