Home Care in South Kensington, SW7
Personal care, companionship and live-in support for older people in the stucco squares, mansion flats and mews between Cromwell Road and the Fulham Road.
Can we provide home care in South Kensington? Yes: visiting care for help with washing, dressing, meals and medication, or a live-in carer. South Kensington and Gloucester Road stations are both on the District and Circle lines from Victoria, which makes SW7 one of the easier parts of Kensington and Chelsea for our carers to reach from Lewisham. Visit times still depend on who is free, so call and ask, and Jackie will come out for a free assessment first.
The squares behind the museums
Most visitors know South Kensington for its museums and Imperial College. The people we'd visit live in the quieter streets around them: Onslow Square and Onslow Gardens, Thurloe Square, Pelham Crescent, Queen's Gate, Harrington Gardens and the mews tucked behind them. Bute Street and the shops around the station are the everyday high street. The Lycée Français and the Institut français are nearby, and the area has had a French community for a long time.
Many older residents here are long-standing leaseholders who bought a flat in a converted stucco house years ago and have no wish to move.
Is a South Kensington flat suitable for care at home?
Usually yes, with some planning. The buildings bring a few recurring problems:
- Small lifts. Lifts added to Victorian houses and older mansion blocks are often too narrow for a wheelchair, and sometimes for a folded hoist. We measure at the assessment.
- No lift at all. A fourth-floor flat in a converted house can become hard to leave. Getting out regularly, with a carer on the stairs, can keep someone mobile for longer.
- Mews houses. These are small, with steep internal stairs and the bedroom usually upstairs, so it's worth thinking early about whether a bed could go downstairs.
- Porters and entry systems. In a portered block we agree with the porter how carers will be let in. Elsewhere, a key safe is the usual answer.
A short bus ride from the Brompton and the Marsden
The Royal Marsden is just south of Onslow Square, and the Royal Brompton is around the corner on Sydney Street. Many SW7 residents have treatment at one or both. The general hospital is Chelsea and Westminster, further down the Fulham Road, and the 14 runs there directly from South Kensington station. The first days at home after a heart procedure or a course of chemotherapy can be tiring, and help with washing, meals and medication lets someone rest. See hospital discharge care.
The museums are part of the neighbourhood. General admission to the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A is free, and all three have step-free access and places to sit. An hour in a favourite gallery with a carer makes a good companionship visit, and it's a short walk from home for many people in SW7.
How much does home care cost in South Kensington?
We don't publish prices. We quote in writing after the free assessment, once we know how many visits are needed and how long each takes. If you'd like help from the council, South Kensington residents apply for a needs assessment to Kensington and Chelsea Adult Social Care, or ring 020 7361 3013. The council then carries out a financial assessment, and people with savings or property above the national limits pay for their own care. If the council does fund care, you can take it as a direct payment and use it to pay an agency you choose, ourselves included. More detail is on our Kensington and Chelsea page and the paying for care guide.
Getting here
South Kensington station has the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines, and so does Gloucester Road at the western end of SW7. Buses are plentiful: the 14, 49, 70, 74, 345, 360, 430 and C1 all stop around South Kensington station, and the 49 and 74 serve Gloucester Road. For a carer coming from south-east London, the route through Victoria and along the District or Circle line is direct.
Live-in care and respite in SW7
A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, and a two-bedroom mansion flat is often enough. It works well for couples who want to stay together at home. See live-in care in Kensington and Chelsea.
For a family member who is doing most of the caring, a week or two of live-in cover or extra visits gives them a proper break. Ask the council for a carer's assessment too. Our page on respite care in Kensington and Chelsea explains how.

South Kensington FAQs
Questions families ask us about South Kensington. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMy aunt lives off Rutland Gate, SW7. Is that Kensington and Chelsea?
Probably not. The Knightsbridge end of SW7, around Rutland Gate, is in the City of Westminster, so Westminster's adult social care would assess her. Her council tax bill will confirm it. We can provide private care either way.
The lift in Dad's block is tiny. Can he still have a hoist?
Often yes. Some mobile hoists fold small or come apart into pieces. We measure the lift at the assessment, and the council's occupational therapist can advise on equipment, including ceiling track hoists that stay in the flat.
Can a carer take Mum to her appointments at the Royal Brompton?
Yes. A carer can go with her to appointments, help with the walk or a taxi, and wait with her. It's a common part of a companionship visit.
My mother speaks French more comfortably than English now. Can you help?
Tell us at the assessment. We can't promise a French-speaking carer, but we'll try to match her with someone suitable and build the care plan around her routines and preferences.
Do you cover Gloucester Road and the Old Brompton Road?
Yes, all of SW7 within Kensington and Chelsea, including Gloucester Road, Harrington Road, Queen's Gate, the Old Brompton Road and the Onslow and Thurloe squares.
