Home Care in Morden and the St Helier Estate
Carers at the end of the Northern line for the cottage homes of SM4: personal care, medicines, meals and company, plus support after a stay at St Helier Hospital.
Yes, we provide home care in Morden. Because the Northern line runs all the way from London Bridge to Morden station, visiting care is realistic across much of SM4, provided we have a carer free at the times you need, which we confirm first. Live-in care is also possible where the home has a spare bedroom, and both start with a free assessment at home.
A suburb built around a Tube terminus
Morden was mostly fields until the Northern line arrived in 1926. The London County Council then built much of its St Helier cottage estate across Morden and into Sutton, and the streets of interwar semis and terraces with front gardens still define the area. Merton's Civic Centre stands on London Road by the station, and the National Trust's Morden Hall Park runs along the northern edge.
For a carer, that terminus matters. From our Lewisham office it is a train to London Bridge and then the Northern line to the last stop, roughly an hour with no changes after London Bridge, which makes regular visits here more dependable than in the west of the borough.
Cottage homes: easy front doors, tight upstairs
St Helier and the surrounding interwar streets are kinder to frail people than many London homes. The ground floor is usually reached without steps, a front garden often leaves room for a ramp or a key safe by the door, and parking outside is generally uncontrolled away from the town centre, where the Morden CPZs apply.
Upstairs is a different matter. Bedrooms tend to be modest and the stairs steep. Where the staircase is straight, it can usually take a standard stairlift, which can keep someone in their own bedroom for longer. A small box room may not suit a live-in carer for long, so we'll look at it honestly during the assessment. Where live-in care doesn't fit, a visiting package built around morning and evening help is the usual alternative.
Eastway Day Centre is in SM4. Merton Council's Eastway Day Centre, at 44 Eastway, is the council's day centre for older people. It opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm, can arrange transport, and is designed partly to give family carers a break. Home care on the other days fits around it well.
Coming home from St Helier Hospital
St Helier Hospital, on Wrythe Lane just over the Sutton border, is where many Morden residents are treated and discharged. The 157 bus runs from Morden station to the hospital, which helps with follow-up appointments a carer can come along to. Some people are referred further afield; the 293 runs from Morden to Epsom Hospital.
Before discharge, Merton Council's Hospital to Home Team organises short-term support, including reablement where it's suitable. If help will be needed after that ends, call us while the ward is still planning discharge, so the assessment can happen in good time. See our hospital discharge support page.
Getting around Morden
Besides the Tube, Morden South has Thameslink trains, and the Morden Road tram stop links to Wimbledon and Mitcham. A long list of buses serves Morden station, including the 80, 93, 154, 157, 163, 164, 201, 293, 413, 470 and K5. A carer going with someone to Morden Hall Park, the Civic Centre or the shops on London Road rarely needs more than one bus.
What does home care in Morden cost, and can the council help?
We quote in writing after the free assessment and don't publish prices, because the cost depends entirely on the hours agreed. For council support, contact Merton's Adult Social Care First Response Team on 020 8545 4388 or ASCFirstResponse@merton.gov.uk; the Civic Centre is the council's headquarters, but assessments are requested by phone or email. If care is funded, a means test decides the person's contribution, and a direct payment lets you choose the provider. More on this is on our Merton home care page.
Live-in care
A live-in carer lives in the home with one person or a couple and takes a daily break agreed in the plan. In Morden it works best in the larger semis, where a proper second bedroom is free.
Respite for family carers
Eastway gives regular weekday breaks; for a longer break we can provide visits or a short live-in stay while you're away. Carers First (0300 303 1555) handles carer's assessments for Merton. See respite care in Merton.

Morden FAQs
Questions families ask us about Morden. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum's house is on the St Helier estate and the only toilet is upstairs. What are the options?
A straight staircase often takes a stairlift, and a commode downstairs can bridge the gap until one is fitted. Ask Merton Council for an occupational therapy assessment. We'll build the care plan around whatever equipment she ends up with.
Dad goes to Eastway three days a week. Can you cover the other days?
Yes. We can plan visits for the days he's at home and, if useful, help him get ready on Eastway mornings. Tell us his centre days at the assessment so the plan fits around them.
Is the St Helier estate in Merton or Sutton?
Both. The estate crosses the boundary, so some homes come under Merton Council and others under Sutton. We cover both sides; the address decides which council you contact for an assessment.
Can a carer take my wife for a walk in Morden Hall Park?
Yes. Time out of the house can be written into a companionship visit, and the park is close to Morden station and the Morden Road tram stop.
