Home Care in Raynes Park, SW20

Live-in care for the Edwardian and interwar family houses between Coombe Lane and Kingston Road, with visiting care only where we have a carer close enough to keep it going.

Yes, we can arrange care at home in Raynes Park, and for most SW20 families the arrangement we can promise is a live-in carer. Raynes Park is one of the furthest parts of Merton from our Lewisham office, so short daily visits depend on whether we have a carer living within reach, which we check before agreeing anything. Every arrangement starts with a free assessment at home and a written care plan.

Is Raynes Park too far for a visiting carer?

Sometimes, and it is better you hear that now. From Lewisham High Street, getting to Raynes Park means a train into town, the Northern line south and then a bus or a second train. That takes noticeably longer than reaching Colliers Wood or Morden. For a single weekly visit it can work. For a 7.30am call to help someone out of bed every day of the year, the journey has to be short and reliable, and from SE13 it is neither.

So when you call, we look at who we have living in or near south-west London. If someone is nearby, a visiting package is possible. If not, we say so, and talk through live-in care in Merton instead, where the carer makes one journey and then stays.

Family houses on both sides of the railway

Raynes Park grew up around its station, and the shops still cluster along Coombe Lane and Kingston Road. Most homes are Edwardian and interwar terraces and semis, settling into larger houses towards West Wimbledon. It is a settled family suburb with a high proportion of owner-occupied homes.

That housing suits live-in care well. A three-bedroom semi almost always has a spare room for a carer, which is the one thing live-in care can't do without. The difficulty is the staircase: a narrow flight up to the only bathroom, often with a bath and no shower. Before care begins, it's worth asking Merton Council for an occupational therapy visit about a bath lift, rails or a stairlift. Bringing a bed downstairs for a while is another option, and the care plan can be built around it.

Two hospitals, two directions. Raynes Park sits close to the Kingston border, so some residents are treated at Kingston Hospital, which the 57 bus reaches from Raynes Park. Others go to St George's in Tooting, on the 57 or 131 to Tooting Broadway. Whichever ward discharges you, your social care comes from Merton Council because you live in the borough. Ask the ward to involve Merton's Hospital to Home Team.

Local GPs and getting around

NHS practices in Raynes Park include Lambton Road Medical Practice at 1 Lambton Road, SW20 0LW, and Grand Drive Surgery at 132 Grand Drive, SW20 9EA. Tell us which practice the person is registered with, and about any district nurse visits, so the care plan fits around them. A carer can prompt, give and record prescribed medicines as part of medication support.

Raynes Park station is on South Western Railway. Buses through the area include the 57, 131, 152, 163, 200 and K5, and the K5 runs across to Morden. Most streets near the station and shops are in the council's Raynes Park controlled parking zones, so a driving carer will need a visitor permit. A housebound resident or Blue Badge holder can apply for Merton's annual carer parking permit.

Live-in care in Raynes Park

A live-in carer moves into the home, helps with washing, dressing, meals, medication and company through the day, and takes an agreed daily break. One carer can support a couple where only one partner needs personal care. Because the carer stays, the distance from Lewisham stops mattering.

Respite, including short stays nearby

If you are the family carer and need a break, we can cover a planned period with a live-in carer. Raynes Park is also the closest part of Merton to our Kingston upon Thames home, which offers respite stays; see supported living for details. Carers First runs Merton's carers' service and carer's assessments on 0300 303 1555. Our Merton respite page covers the council's routes.

How much does home care cost in Raynes Park?

We quote in writing after the free assessment, once the hours or the live-in arrangement are agreed. We don't publish prices.

For council help, Merton's Adult Social Care First Response Team takes requests for a needs assessment on 020 8545 4388 or by email; there is no online form. If the person is eligible, a financial assessment works out their contribution, and NHS Continuing Healthcare may pay where needs are mainly health needs. Our Merton home care page explains direct payments and the rest of the council route.

Raynes Park: families' questions

Questions families ask us about Raynes Park. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Mum was treated at Kingston Hospital, but she lives in SW20. Which council arranges her care?

Merton, because she lives in the borough. The hospital being in Kingston doesn't change that. Ask the ward to contact Merton's Hospital to Home Team before discharge, and call us if longer-term care will be needed afterwards.

Dad is registered at Grand Drive Surgery and has a district nurse calling. Will your carer get in the way?

No. Tell us the nurse's usual days and what they do, such as dressings or injections, and we will time visits so the carer is not there at the same moment unless a handover helps. Anything the nurse asks the carer to watch for goes into his care plan.

Do you cover West Barnes and the streets towards New Malden?

Yes, for live-in care. West Barnes is in Merton, and some addresses there have KT3 postcodes. Visiting care that far west depends entirely on having a carer who lives nearby, so ask us.

Is your Kingston home close enough for a short respite stay?

It's the nearest of our three homes to Raynes Park, a short drive across the borough boundary. Whether a stay there suits depends on the person's needs, so we'd talk it through first. The supported living page has the details.
