Home Care in St Helier, Sutton

Care at home for the Sutton side of the St Helier estate, from the Wrythe to Rosehill: getting up and dressed, medicines, meals and company, and help settling back in after St Helier Hospital.

Yes, we provide home care in St Helier, across the SM5 streets in Sutton and the SM4 edge of the estate. Live-in care is the most dependable option, because the carer moves in. Visiting care depends on having a carer free at the times you need, so ask. Both start with a free home assessment.

An estate you can find your way round by the alphabet

The London County Council built St Helier between 1928 and 1936 to rehouse families from inner London, and named it after Lady St Helier, one of its aldermen. Its roads are named alphabetically after abbeys, from Aberconway Road in the north-west to Woburn Road in the south-east, which helps a new carer find a first address. North of Green Lane and Bishopsford Road the estate is in Merton (see our Morden page). This page covers Sutton's St Helier East and West wards, the Wrythe and Rosehill.

Planning care around a St Helier house

The cottage-style terraces were built for young families, not for someone with a frame or a wheelchair. Bedrooms are small, the stairs are narrow, and in many houses the bathroom is upstairs. A hoist may not fit beside the bed, so we check the rooms at the assessment.

Sutton Council's occupational therapists can help, and you can request a free OT assessment online. They can lend equipment such as bath seats and hoists. Grab rails and stair rails cost you nothing. Stairlifts and level-access showers may qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant. Beds and pressure mattresses come through the GP or district nurse. We then write the care plan around whatever equipment is fitted.

The hospital is part of the neighbourhood. St Helier Hospital opened on Wrythe Lane in 1938, on the southern edge of the estate. The 151, 157 and S1 buses stop at the hospital, and more routes, including the 280, stop at Rosehill roundabout, about ten minutes' walk away. A carer can go with someone to an appointment if that is written into the plan.

Leaving St Helier Hospital: START first, then longer-term care

Most residents are discharged from St Helier Hospital. A social worker or health professional can refer them to Sutton Council's free START reablement service, which visits between 7am and 11pm for up to six weeks. If help will still be needed afterwards, ring us while START is running, so the plan is ready when it ends. See our hospital discharge support page.

How do I get council-funded home care in St Helier?

Start with Sutton Adult Social Care's online care needs checklist, or phone 020 8770 5000 (weekdays, 9am to 5pm). The assessment can take up to six weeks, and a financial assessment follows. The council says it usually helps people with under £23,250 in savings. People above that can still ask it to arrange care, but they pay the full cost plus a fee. A direct payment lets you choose the agency. If you pay privately, we quote in writing after our own assessment. More is on our Sutton home care page.

How carers reach the estate

St Helier station is on Thameslink's Sutton loop. Morden, the last stop on the Northern line, is just over the boundary, so St Helier is one of the few parts of Sutton a carer can reach by Tube. Even so, it is an hour or more from our Lewisham office, which is why visiting care depends on carer availability. For drivers, most Sutton streets have no parking controls, and none of the council's six controlled parking zones is a St Helier zone. If an address does fall inside one, the council sells a Resident Care Permit that any of the person's carers can use.

Live-in care on the estate

A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, and here that often decides it. The smallest box rooms are too cramped for weeks at a time; a proper second bedroom usually works. One live-in carer can also support a couple.

A break for the family carer

Family carers can ask Sutton Council for a carer's assessment on 020 8770 5000, which can lead to respite and a personal budget. Sutton Carers Centre (020 8296 5611) runs support groups and a dementia carers service. For a holiday or a hospital stay of your own, we can cover with visits or a short live-in stay. St Helier questions

Questions families ask us about St Helier. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
How do I know whether my address is in Sutton or Merton?

Your council tax bill says which. Roughly, the estate north of Green Lane and Bishopsford Road is in Merton and the rest is in Sutton. We cover both; the council only decides who does the needs assessment.

The stairs in Dad's house turn halfway up. Can he still have care upstairs?

Often, yes. Curved stairlifts exist, and a Disabled Facilities Grant may help, so ask Sutton's OT team to assess it. Meanwhile a bed downstairs can bridge the gap, and we plan visits around either set-up.

Mum is on START after her stay in St Helier Hospital. When should we call you?

Call while START is still visiting. START lasts six weeks at most. Calling early means we can assess her and agree a plan before it finishes, so she isn't left without help when it ends.

Our spare room is only a box room. Does that rule out live-in care?

Not automatically. We will look at the room at the assessment. If it is too small to live in, regular visits are the alternative, depending on what times we can cover.
