Home Care in Hackbridge, Wallington (SM6)
Live-in and visiting care in Hackbridge, from the Edwardian shops on London Road to BedZED, New Mill Quarter and the new flats beside the River Wandle.
Yes, we can provide home care in Hackbridge. A live-in carer can be arranged anywhere in the area, and visiting care depends on whether we have a carer close enough for regular calls, so ask us about your street. We begin with a free assessment at home, then write a care plan with you.
Old cottages and new blocks
Hackbridge has changed a great deal in the last twenty years. The centre, around London Road and the station, is mostly Edwardian and early 20th-century, with mock-Tudor semis and terraces in the surrounding streets. Around them are some of the borough's newest homes: BedZED, the Peabody Trust's 82-home development, built between 2000 and 2002 and designed to be zero carbon; Barratt's New Mill Quarter, with around 440 homes; the Centrale apartments on London Road, finished in 2013; and the regenerated Durand Close estate.
That mix shapes the care. In a recent block with a lift and step-free entrance, it is easier to get a wheelchair in and out, have equipment delivered and fit a hoist. Wet rooms and level-access showers are more common too. In an older terrace, the questions are about the stairs, a narrow bathroom and whether the downstairs front room could become a bedroom. An occupational therapist from the council can advise on rails, bath equipment and stairlifts.
Living in a one-bedroom flat? Many of the new homes in Hackbridge are one- or two-bedroom flats. A live-in carer needs a bedroom of their own, so a one-bedroom flat usually means visiting care. A two-bedroom flat can work well for live-in care, with the lift and level floors making daily life easier for both people.
Is Hackbridge easy for a carer to reach?
Within the borough, yes. Hackbridge station has Southern and Thameslink trains, the 127 and 151 buses stop at Hackbridge Corner on their way to Carshalton, Wallington and St Helier Hospital, the 80 runs to Sutton, and the nearest tram stop is Mitcham Junction. None of Sutton's named Controlled Parking Zones is in Hackbridge, so a carer driving between visits can usually park, though it is worth checking an address near the station on the council's parking checker. Even so, the journey from our Lewisham office is around an hour, so we only offer regular visits when we have a carer available nearby.
What we can do at home
Can Sutton Council help pay for care in Hackbridge?
Hackbridge is in the London Borough of Sutton, so Sutton Adult Social Care carries out the needs assessment. Phone 020 8770 5000 or use the online checklist on the council's care needs assessment page. If you are eligible, a financial assessment works out what you pay, and you can take your personal budget as a direct payment and use it to pay us. If you would rather arrange care privately, we quote in writing after the free assessment. Our Sutton home care page covers funding and the council process in full.
St Helier Hospital in Carshalton is only a short distance away and is the usual hospital for Hackbridge. After a stay there, the council's free START reablement team often supports people at home for the first few weeks, alongside community nurses and therapists from Sutton Health and Care.
Support for the family carer
If you are looking after a partner or parent in Hackbridge, you are entitled to your own carer's assessment from Sutton Council. You can refer yourself online or call the same number. Sutton Carers Centre on Benhill Avenue offers advice, support groups and a dedicated dementia carers service. When you need a break, a live-in carer can stay for a week or two (see respite care), and our nearest supported living home, in Kingston, can offer short stays to adults who need a supported setting.

Questions about Hackbridge
Questions families ask us about Hackbridge. If yours is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a questionMum lives at BedZED. Does the unusual design affect care?
No. At the assessment we look at the layout of her home, where the bathroom is, any stairs and how she gets in and out, just as we would anywhere else. An eco-home is still a home, and we plan the care around how it is laid out.
We have a two-bedroom flat in New Mill Quarter. Would live-in care work?
Usually, yes. The second bedroom becomes the carer's room. A lift and level floors make it easier to manage a wheelchair or walking frame and to get out to the river paths together.
Our address says Wallington. Are we covered?
Yes. Hackbridge addresses often use Wallington as the post town under SM6. We cover all of it, along with nearby Wallington, Beddington and Carshalton.
Dad is coming out of St Helier next week. Is it too late to arrange private care?
Call us now and tell the ward that you are arranging private care. We can't promise a start date before checking availability, but the sooner we know, the better the chance of having care in place for the day he comes home.
Are there day activities nearby for someone with dementia?
Age UK Sutton runs the Sutton Dementia Hub, with an adviser service, peer support groups and dementia cafes across the borough. A carer can take someone along to groups as part of a companionship visit.
