Home Care in North Cheam (SM3)

Live-in care, and visiting care where we can staff it, for the 1930s semis and side roads around the London Road and Malden Road crossroads.

Yes, we provide home care in North Cheam, mostly as live-in care. North Cheam has no station and is one of the furthest parts of London from our Lewisham office, so a carer who lives in is the dependable choice; regular visits are only possible when we have a carer nearby. A free home assessment comes first.

Who do I contact first about care for a parent in North Cheam?

North Cheam is in the London Borough of Sutton, so the first call for council help is Sutton Adult Social Care on 020 8770 5000 (weekdays, 9am to 5pm). You can also start online with the council's care needs checklist, which leads to a request form. The council aims to get in touch within 10 working days, and the assessment is usually done in person. If your parent is eligible, a financial assessment follows. The council says people with more than £23,250 in savings usually pay the full cost of their care.

You can do this alongside talking to us. If you plan to pay privately, our free assessment and written quote don't depend on the council. Our Sutton home care page covers the council's process and funding in more depth.

Around the crossroads

North Cheam grew up around the junction where the London Road (the A24, following the line of the Roman Stane Street) crosses Malden Road, with roads leading off to Cheam Village, Worcester Park, Morden and Ewell. Cheam Leisure Centre is on Malden Road, and the shops cluster around the crossroads.

Most streets are lined with 1930s semis and short terraces with front drives and back gardens. For care, these houses are fairly predictable. There is usually a third bedroom or box room for a live-in carer, a straight staircase that will often take a stairlift, and a front room that can become a bedroom if needed. The weak point is usually the bathroom: small, upstairs, and with a bath where a level-access shower would be safer. Ask the council's occupational therapists about adaptations.

Parking is the easy part. Most North Cheam streets are uncontrolled, and with front drives and quiet side roads, carers driving between visits can usually park close to the door. Towards Worcester Park station, check whether an address falls in the Longfellow zone on the council's parking checker.

Age UK's Living Well Centre on Malden Road

North Cheam has one of Age UK Sutton's own sites: the Living Well Centre at 316 Malden Road, behind Cheam Leisure Centre (020 8078 2149). The same address was home to the Cheam Priory Day Centre, which the council reported closed for urgent repairs in October 2025, so phone to check what is running before you plan around it. For dementia, Age UK Sutton also runs the Sutton Dementia Hub, with advisers, peer support groups and dementia cafes. A carer can take someone to a group or activity as part of a companionship visit.

Buses, not trains

The nearest stations are Worcester Park, Cheam and Sutton Common, none of them on the doorstep. Most people rely on buses: the 93 runs from North Cheam to Morden, Wimbledon and Putney, the 213 links Sutton and Kingston through the area, and the 151 runs between Worcester Park and Wallington. A carer travelling from Lewisham would need two trains and a bus, well over an hour each way. That is the honest reason we recommend live-in care for most North Cheam families.

Short breaks

If a family member does most of the caring, a live-in carer can step in for a week or two while they rest (see respite care). Unpaid carers can also ask Sutton Council for a carer's assessment. For adults who need a supported setting, our Kingston supported living home is the nearest of our three homes, and the 213 bus runs from North Cheam to Kingston. It can offer short stays.

North Cheam questions

Questions families ask us about North Cheam. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Our postcode is KT4. Are we in Sutton or Kingston?

Some homes on the North Cheam and Worcester Park side have KT4 postcodes. Part of that area is in Sutton and part is in Kingston. Your council tax bill tells you which council to ask for an assessment. If it is Kingston, see our Kingston upon Thames page.

Dad's semi has the bathroom upstairs and he can't manage the bath. What can be done?

In the short term, a carer can help him with a strip wash downstairs or use a bath board or seat safely. In the longer term, ask Sutton Council for an occupational therapy assessment. A stairlift or a level-access shower may be possible, and we will build either into his care plan.

Can a live-in carer use Dad's car or park on the drive?

Parking on the drive is fine. Whether a carer drives the family car depends on insurance and what is agreed in the care plan, so raise it at the assessment.

Mum used to go to the day centre on Malden Road. Can a carer help fill the gap?

Yes. A companionship visit or a live-in carer can bring back some of the structure the day centre gave her: going out, seeing people and having a routine. Check with Age UK Sutton what is running at the Living Well Centre now, as we can take her along to that too.
