Live-in Care in North Cheam for Individuals and Couples

For husbands and wives who want to stay together in the SM3 semi they have lived in for years, with one carer living alongside them.

Yes, we provide live-in care in North Cheam, for one person or for a couple. A carer moves into the house with their own bedroom and helps with personal care, meals, medication and everyday life, and a relief carer covers their days off. Our free home assessment with Jackie, the registered manager, comes first, then a written care plan.

When one partner needs care and the other is worn out

North Cheam is a neighbourhood of 1930s semis and short terraces with drives and gardens, the kind of family house a couple can grow old in. When one partner develops dementia, Parkinson's or heart failure, the other can slide into being a full-time carer without anyone deciding it. Live-in care lets both of them stay in the house, and lets the healthier partner go back to being a husband or wife.

In practice, the carer gives full personal care to one person and lighter help to the other: a hand on the stairs, meals for two, the shopping, and company while the healthier partner goes out alone for an hour. The care plan has a separate section for each person, so it is clear what each of them wants help with and what they would still prefer to do themselves.

Arranging the rooms in a 1930s semi

Many 1930s semis here have three bedrooms and a single bathroom upstairs, with two rooms downstairs. For a couple with a live-in carer, that usually means:

  • the couple in the main bedroom, or in two rooms if one partner's nights are disturbed;
  • the carer in the box room or third bedroom, with space for a single bed and their things;
  • if the stairs become unsafe, a bed or profiling bed in the downstairs front room, with a hoist if needed, and an alarm or monitor so the carer upstairs can hear.

If the couple then need two bedrooms and the carer needs the third, there is no room left, and we will talk that through honestly. The straight staircases in these houses often suit a stairlift, and Sutton Council's occupational therapists can assess for one, along with a level-access shower in place of the bath. Where a single person lives in a flat with only one bedroom, live-in care is not possible; our home care in North Cheam page covers visiting care.

How does a live-in carer get to North Cheam without a station?

By train and then bus, or by bus all the way from the Northern line. The nearest stations are Worcester Park, on South Western Railway's line to Waterloo, plus Cheam on Southern and Sutton Common on Thameslink. National Rail lists Worcester Park as step-free to all platforms, though some routes involve long ramps, so a carer with luggage should check the station's notices for lift problems before travelling. From Morden, the end of the Northern line, the 93 bus runs to North Cheam, and the 213 between Sutton and Kingston and the 151 from Wallington also pass through. The outgoing carer stays until the new one has arrived and read the notes.

Parking is rarely a problem. Many houses have a front drive, and most streets have no controls. The one to check for is Sutton's Wellington Avenue Controlled Parking Zone, on the Worcester Park side of the crossroads; if the house is in it, the household's 50 free visitor hours a year cover a relief carer's car on changeover day.

The carer's break, and days out for the couple

A live-in carer has a protected break every day, which needs planning when there are two people in the house. Sometimes the healthier partner is happy to be at home with their husband or wife for that time; sometimes a relative, a sitting visit or a group covers it instead. Nearby options for the carer, and for the couple on a good day:

  • The crossroads. The shops around the junction of London Road and Malden Road, and Cheam Leisure Centre on Malden Road.
  • Cheam Park, south past Cheam Village, and Nonsuch Park beyond it, for a longer outing by car or bus.
  • Worcester Park Library, at Stone Place near Worcester Park station, for somewhere quiet.
  • Age UK Sutton's Living Well Centre at 316 Malden Road, behind the leisure centre. Phone 020 8078 2149 to ask what is running before planning around it.

Support for the partner who has been caring

Even with a live-in carer in the house, the partner who has been caring for years needs support of their own. They can ask for a carer's assessment from Sutton Council, which can lead to help such as respite or benefits advice. Sutton Carers Centre on Benhill Avenue runs support groups and a dedicated service for people caring for someone with dementia. If the main aim is a short break, our respite care page explains how a live-in carer can cover a week or two.

Paying for live-in care for two

The cost for a couple depends on both people's needs, so we quote in writing after the free assessment. If the council is involved, Sutton Adult Social Care assesses each partner separately, and each has their own financial assessment. Our live-in care in Sutton page covers the council route and NHS Continuing Healthcare, and live-in care in London explains how the service works.

North Cheam FAQs

North Cheam live-in care: your questions

Questions families ask us about North Cheam. If yours is not here, ask us directly.

Ask a question
Can one live-in carer really look after both my parents?

Often, yes, if one parent needs most of the help and the other needs less. If both need two people for moving and handling, or both need help through the night, one carer is not enough, and we will tell you that at the assessment.

Our semi has three bedrooms, but my parents now sleep in separate rooms. Where would the carer sleep?

If all three rooms are in use, the usual answer is moving one parent's bed downstairs into the front room, which may suit them anyway if the stairs are hard. We look at the layout together before anything is decided.

Will each of my parents be assessed separately by the council?

Yes. Sutton Adult Social Care looks at each person's needs and finances on their own, even though one carer supports both. Ask for both assessments at the same time.

Can the carer take Mum to Nonsuch Park while Dad has a rest?

Yes, if Dad is safe on his own for that time or someone else is with him. We write outings like this into the care plan, so they don't depend on which carer is on duty.
